UPDATED: WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne Injured At Local NYC Show
The story has been updated at the bottom of this post concerning Dunne’s status for PROGRESS this weekend.
What Happened in Brooklyn?
WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne was legitimately cut open and bled during a main event match at an independent New York City show on Friday night. Dunne fought against Darius Carter at “The Bounty in Kings County” show in Brooklyn for the Battle Club Pro wrestling promotion. The match, which saw Dunne and Carter wrestle across the school gymnasium, ended abruptly after Dunne’s head started bleeding.
I was at the Brooklyn show, and it appeared the cut occurred when Carter used one of his championship belts to attack Dunne during a moment in the match when The Carnies tag team and fellow British Strong Style members Trent Seven and Tyler Bate interfered in the non-title match. Another report suggested the cut occurred when Darius performed the Pedigree on Dunne, which did look awkward.
Once Dunne realized he was bleeding, and it did look like a serious cut, he put Carter in a submission move and Carter immediately tapped. Dunne quickly left the ring and it was obvious he wasn’t thrilled with the situation. His quick departure to backstage did leave an awkward moment for the crowd who wanted to celebrate his victory.
Earlier in the show, it was announced Bate, Dunne, and Seven would take pictures with fans in the ring, but following the main event, the special meet and greet was canceled. Prior to the Brooklyn show starting, there was already a meet and greet with many of the event’s stars meeting fans, which included British Strong Style. To the credit of British Strong Style, Bate and Seven did stay to meet fans and sell their merchandise following the main event.
Problem for PROGRESS?
Dunne’s injury was unfortunate for various reasons — his personal health, the reputation for Carter, and for the wrestling promotions involved. Rumors circulated about Dunne’s role at PROGRESS Wrestling’s first New York City show, which is scheduled for today, just less than 24 hours after the Battle Club Pro show. Dunne has been scheduled to defend his WWE United Kingdom Championship against fellow WWE superstar Gentleman Jack Gallagher in a show that has been promoted by WWE as well.
PROGRESS Wrestling’s Co-owener Jim Smallman and Executive Producer Glen Joseph were not happy with what transpired last night and tweeted the following:
Safe to say I'm not the happiest bunny in the world right now…
