WWE Names Their Top 10 Matches Of 2017 So Far
We’re about halfway through 2017 and the WWE staff published what they believe are the top 10 matches of the year – so far. The WWE cruiserweights secured two spots on the list, while the women, surprisingly, only managed No. 9. The sole-WrestleMania match on the list is questionable, while the top two matches took place outside the main roster. The No. 1 match, as you’ll see below, were given to superstars who weren’t even on any WWE roster at this point last year!
10. Neville vs. Rich Swann — WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match (Raw, March 6)
9. Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch vs. Natalya vs. Carmella vs. Tamina — Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match (SmackDown LIVE, June 27)
8. Gentleman Jack Gallagher vs. TJP vs. Cedric Alexander vs. Noam Dar vs. Mustafa Ali — WWE Cruiserweight Championship No. 1 Contender’s Fatal 5-Way Elimination Match (205 Live, Feb. 7)
7. Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns (Raw, May 29)
6. Big Show vs. Braun Strowman (Raw, Feb. 20)
5. Shane McMahon vs. AJ Styles (WrestleMania)
4. Finn Bálor vs. Seth Rollins vs. The Miz — Triple Threat Intercontinental Championship No. 1 Contender’s Match (Raw, May 1)
3. AJ Styles vs. John Cena — WWE Championship Match (Royal Rumble)
2. The Authors of Pain vs. #DIY vs. The Revival — Triple Threat NXT Tag Team Championship Elimination Match (NXT TakeOver: Orlando)
1. Tyler Bate vs. Pete Dunne — WWE United Kingdom Championship Match (NXT TakeOver: Chicago)
Yes, the top spot went to WWE’s United Kingdom competitors. Then-WWE United Kingdom Champion Tyler Bate and challenger Pete Dunne battled in what undoubtedly was the match of the night at NXT TakeOver: Chicago on May 20, which brought the crowd to their feet and applaud both superstars on a number of occasions. The match received praise from many names including legendary commentator Jim Ross.
The WWE’s Top 10 article commented:
“Jim Ross and Nigel McGuinness call the action in a bout that combines catch, strong style and spectacle to earn a “U-K!” chant from the Chi-town faithful before Dunne achieves the hard-earned win to capture the title. Both Superstars have been mostly quiet since, but a few more matches like this and the UK Championship picture might just be the one to watch over the next few years.”
“Signature Moment: Dunne goes for his whirligig finisher, the Bitter End, and then Bate (who, again, is TWENTY) reverses it in midair into a DDT.”
