Triple H Gives Some Controversial Comments On NXT Fans

That might get some people talking. NXT is one of the most unique wrestling promotions in the world as it serves more than one purpose. While it is a show that airs on its own every week for two hours in prime time, it is also the official developmental program for WWE. This brings an additional layer of pressure of the wrestlers, and now one of the biggest names in NXT has something interesting to say about it.

WWE COO Triple H took part in a media conference call to promote this Sunday’s NXT Takeover: In Your House and was asked about NXT wrestlers moving to other shows. Triple H responded with the following (transcription courtesy of Wrestlinginc.com):

“Do you like it, or do you not like it? Do you have to say, ‘I like it, but I like this other thing more,’ or ‘I like it, but I don’t like it as much as I like that one.’ Just watch it or don’t and stop trying to figure out where everything goes.”

“The fans ruin their own stuff half the time trying to figure out where everything goes and why it’s going there and how and then trying to pick up their phone and go search for the thing to find out what it is that can ruin it for them so they’re not surprised when it happens. I don’t understand that. I’m thrilled with what the brand is. I’m happy with where it is. Do I want it to get better? Yes. Do I want it to grow? Yes. Do I want it to expand? Yes.

“But again, people will take this line, use it out of context. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. I’m not here to make a brand that’s around for a few years or a few minutes. I want it to be long term, and how’s it going to be long term? It’s going to morph and evolve. It shouldn’t be the same. If it’s the same three years from now or four years from now as it is right now, we made a mistake. It’s just like people, you grow. If you’re the same person four years from now, you didn’t grow.”

Opinion: This is the kind of thing that could be taken in a few different ways depending on your perspective. Above all else, I can understand what Triple H means. It is true that wrestling fans can overthink things and that can cause some issues for everyone involved. Sometimes it would be nice for people, myself included, to just sit back and enjoy the wrestling show without turning into armchair bookers. However, there is a bit more to it than that.

NXT has developed a reputation over the years as the launchpad for stars to go to the main roster. There have been quite a few successes but also several failures and I do not think it is unreasonable for fans to question how things are moving. If NXT is the third brand of WWE TV then fine, but when it has been the developmental show for years, asking about wrestlers moving up is fair as well.
