They liked it. There are certain stars who are able to draw in interest to any wrestling program they are on and it can do quite a bit of good for any promotion. Those stars are few and far between but when they are around, they can be quite valuable. WWE had one of them on their main television show this week and his appearance seems to have been a hit. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: How To Start: Gable Steveson Offers Details On His WWE In-Ring Debut John Cena made an advertised appearance this week on Monday Night Raw where he was confronted by United States Champion Austin Theory. The two argued in the ring and a title match was set up for WrestleMania 39. According to Fightful Select, WWE was said to be happy with Cena’s appearance, saying that he added “familiar eyes” to this week’s show. There is no word on when Cena will be appearing on the show next. There is a history here. Check out the confrontation, plus how we got here: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post c..
That’s on tap. We are less than forty days away from WrestleMania 39 and that means the card is really starting to come together. If the matches have not yet been announced, you can probably guess a good few of them, as they have been all but flat out said. This is the culmination of several months of build and now we know just how long one of them has been set in stone. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Lawyer Up: WWE Facing Lawsuit Over Injury At WrestleMania 38 Earlier this week, WWE announced that John Cena will be returning to Monday Night Raw on March 6. United States Champion Austin Theory mentioned Cena’s return this week on Monday Night Raw and was not happy about it. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Cena vs. Theory is set for WrestleMania 39 and that has been the case since July, just after the two had a confrontation during Cena’s most recent Monday Night Raw appearance. Cena and Theory have a bit of a history. Check out what happened, plus the two in action: [This post conta..
That would be a big one. There are certain wrestlers who get your attention like no one else. Something about them makes them stand out from the crowd and having them on any given show is a special occasion. WWE has some of those stars around today and it can be a big deal to see them in action. That might be the case again with a legend on an upcoming show. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Legends Rise? Update On WrestleMania Status Of The Rock And Steve Austin According to F4WOnline.com, Brock Lesnar is expected to have a match at this year’s Elimination Chamber, though there is no word on who he will be facing. Lesnar is not expected to take part in the Elimination Chamber match. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, while Lesnar had a confrontation with Gunther in the Royal Rumble, the two are not expected to face each other at WrestleMania 39, leaving a match at Elimination Chamber possible though not confirmed. Lesnar lives up to the Beast moniker. Check out what he can do when he is a..
It took long enough. Tag team wrestling has an interesting dynamic, as you can have two very talented wrestlers who have enough in common to make a great team. At the same time, there are often teams who are more different than similar, which can lead to issues. Those issues can even go so far as to having the team split up and that is what we saw this week. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: One More Ride? Update On The Shield Reuniting In WWE Anytime Soon This week’s edition of AEW Dynamite featured a face to face confrontation between Swerve In Our Glory members Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland, as moderated by hip hop mogul Rick Rock. The two had been having issues in recent weeks and hoped to work them out. During the showdown, Strickland came to the ring but told Lee to watch his back, with Parker Boudreaux attacking Lee from behind. An unnamed man (a former baseball player named Granden Goetzman, according to JJ Williams of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter) joined in to help attack Lee, w..
Don’t get your hopes up. There have been a lot of great stables throughout WWE’s history, with some of the better ones being around in recent years. It makes sense for a stable to be successful in modern wrestling, as there is a heck of a lot more television time for the teams to dominate. WWE name dropped a very successful stable recently, but a reunion does not seem likely. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Nikki Cross Teases Return Of Former Stable Earlier this week on Monday Night Raw, Seth Rollins and United States Champion Theory had a face to face confrontation. During their talk, Theory said that Rollins was the third most successful member of the Shield. This comes as WWE recently finished celebrating the ten year anniversary of the Shield’s WWE debut at Survivor Series 2012. This led to some speculation about a possible Shield reunion in WWE, but this is not likely at the time. Earlier this year, Jon Moxley (formerly Dean Ambrose of the Shield) signed a new deal with AEW, which..
Pick up your last check. In the closing moments of Raw this week, WWE official Adam Pearce got into a confrontation with Bobby Lashley following his main event match with Seth Rollins. The All Mighty was about to win the match and an opportunity at the United States Championship against Austin Theory when the referee was knocked out of the ring and twisted his ankle. This slight distraction allowed Rollins to recover and hit Lashley with a Pedigree out of a spear. Rollins would then make the cover to become the no. 1 contender for the championship. Following the match, Lashley would snap and take out his aggression on two referees. This caused Pearce to come to ringside for a confrontation and and after Lashley pushed Pierce down, Pierce said that The All Mighty was fired. .@fightbobby just got FIRED?!?! ?#WWERaw @ScrapDaddyAP pic.twitter.com/nWziVkY34s — WWE (@WWE) December 13, 2022 Editor’s Opinion: This was an interesting way to close the show and a plot twist I didn’t see com..
After months of speculation, MJF won the AEW World Championship on Saturday night at AEW Full Gear. Since his return, MJF has been pushed as an emerging babyface with a “clean victory’ over Jon Moxely being a point of pride for his character. However, William Regal slid his own brass knuckles to MJF for him to take another shortcut to the richest prize in AEW. An angle that had been heavily foreshadowed on AEW television for weeks, especially since the MJF/Regal confrontation promo. While the swerve of the storyline was obvious, the fun of the situation is the questions that the AEW fanbase is asking about what happens next. Related: MJF Wins AEW World Championship; William Regal Turns Heel at AEW Full Gear After the PPV, Dave Melter reported on F4Wonline that Tony Khan was the one who put the final angle together. In fact, he actually held very strong that his plan was the best direction forward despite several “influential wrestlers” and other proposing creative ideas for the finis..
That could have gotten bad. There are a lot of issues that take place during a wrestling show but one of the most impressive things a company can do is keep the fans from knowing about them. Sometimes you can notice a problem here or there though and that was the case last week, to the point where a promotion’s officials had to make sure that everything was ok. Last week on AEW Dark, Athena defeated Jody Threat in a match that saw both of them get more aggressive than usual. According to Fightful Select, AEW officials spoke to both of the women backstage to make sure everything was ok after the match. Sources close to Athena believe that she switched into a heel role during the match because of the positive reaction that Threat received during the match. Threat was said to have no complaints as she tries to avoid the political side of wrestling. Neither woman was said to be upset about anything that happened and there was no confrontation backstage. Opinion: The good thing here is th..
Now there’s a tease. WWE has a long history of stars on its roster but there are times when they need to bring someone new into the fold. That can be easier said than done, but one of the best things that they can do is have a legend give a rub to an up and coming star. Now it seems that WWE is laying the groundwork for such a change on the biggest stage around. Mr. Money in the Bank Austin Theory made a surprise appearance this week on SmackDown. During the show, Michael Cole praised Theory’s abilities, but said that he needed “an attitude adjustment”. This would seem to continue to point to a future match between Theory and John Cena, which has been rumored since Cena and Theory had a backstage confrontation earlier this year on Monday Night Raw. Opinion: This is something that seems to have been set up more than once and it wouldn’t surprise me to see the match take place at WrestleMania 39. Cena is known for working with some of the up and coming stars and Theory could certainly ..
Hold on for a second. There are very few stars in the history of wrestling who have reached the heights of John Cena. While he might not be the most popular star among all fans, Cena has become one of the biggest names ever in WWE and the company certainly values what they can get out of him. That seems to be the case again, but it might be a little while before Cena is back between the ropes. This week’s Monday Night Raw was focused on twenty years of Cena in WWE. Cena appeared on the show and got into a backstage confrontation with Theory. This comes after rumors of Cena vs. Theory at Summerslam have been circulating. However, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the match might be postponed until WrestleMania. Cena is one of WWE’s biggest draws and they would want to promote the match as far in advance as possible but not mention was made on Monday Night Raw. Cena also made it clear that he would wrestle again, but he said he did not know when. Opinion: This makes sense..
It’s another place to go. WWE and AEW get most of the attention in the wrestling world and that is not going to change for the time being. That being said, they are also not the only promotions in the world and there is a lot of talent out there away from the major companies. Sometimes you see a former WWE wrestler try his luck elsewhere, and that is the case again with a homecoming. Kushida made a surprise return to New Japan Pro Wrestling this week at the New Japan Road show in Tokyo. Kushida returned and confronted IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Taiji Ishimori, likely setting up a future match between the two. After the confrontation, Kushida announced that he would be spending the rest of his career with New Japan. This marked Kushida’s first appearance since leaving WWE in April of this year. Opinion: I don’t know if Kushida returning to New Japan was so much a matter of if but rather when. He had the greatest successes of his career there and it makes sense to bring him back ..
Not so fast? Wrestlers are athletes, but there are certain things about their careers that are not like their mainstream counterparts. One of the biggest is retirement, as wrestlers can often jump back into the ring for a one off here or there, as there is no such thing as a season in most wrestling promotions. That can make for some interesting returns, but we might not be seeing one this time. Last month, a report emerged that Steve Austin was possibly returning to the ring for a match at WrestleMania 38, possibly against Kevin Owens. Nothing was ever officially announced though, and now the Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that Austin may not be having a match, though there is still a possibility. Austin is still expected to have a confrontation with Owens of some form, likely resulting in Owens taking a Stunner. Opinion: The more I think about it, the better this might be for everyone involved. At the end of the day, Austin has not wrestled in nearly twenty years and is..
Who was that again? As is the case in almost any other job, wrestlers often move from one employer to another. In this case, wrestlers jump from promotion to promotion, which can make for some interesting moves. Some of these are a lot more interesting than others, but it can be fascinating to see where someone winds up. It can be an even bigger deal to hear them referenced again, and that was the case this week. This week’s edition of WWE SmackDown featured a confrontation between Seth Rollins and the Bloodline. During the segment, Rollins and Roman Reigns argued back and forth, with Rollins referencing the pair’s time in the Shield. Rollins said that the Usos were holding Reigns up, “just like Mox and I held you up during the Shield.” This was a rare reference to Dean Ambrose under his AEW name of Jon Moxley. In a related note, Moxley returned to the ring for the first time since October this week on AEW Rampage. Opinion: That is one of those situations that doesn’t mean very much ..
It was a busy night. We are less than two weeks away from the Royal Rumble and the card has mostly come together. In addition to the show’s two namesake matches, there are some other huge showdowns set for the show. That includes a pair of World Title matches and one of them received some special attention after the cameras stopped rolling this week. This week’s edition of SmackDown ended with Seth Rollins running away from an attack at the hands of the Usos and Roman Reigns. Following the show going off the air, Reigns and Rollins continued to tease a fight but never got around to it, as the Usos attacked Rollins again. A video of the confrontation has been uploaded to Twitter and according to 411mania.com, a six man tag followed, with Rollins and the Viking Raiders defeating Roman Reigns and the Usos. It was quite the moment. Check out what happened after SmackDown went off the air: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: They are doing a good job of saving the violent..
It comes with the territory. There is something special about being the World Champion, as it means you are the face of your company. You are the first person that a lot of fans are going to think of for the promotion and the responsibilities mount up in a hurry. This is the case with both on the road and at any show, and that was the case for the newest World Champion this week. Last weekend, Hangman Page defeated Kenny Omega to become the new AEW World Champion at Full Gear. Page made his Dynamite debut as champion this week, where he got into a confrontation with #1 contender Bryan Danielson. Following the taping, CM Punk came to the ring and had Page sing “cowboy songs”, including an altered version of Country Roads Take Me Home, which you can see below. This is one of those awesome things you don’t get to see every week. Check out the song, plus what else Page can do: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains vide..
Keep piling them on. We are just over a week away from AEW’s next pay per view offering with Full Gear, meaning the company shouldn’t have much left to do to get the show ready. AEW has a rather strong history on pay per view and it is nice to see how well they can do when they get the chance. That will be the case again now as more matches have been added to the show. Two more matches were added to Full Gear during this week’s AEW Rampage. First up, Eddie Kingston and CM Punk had a face to face confrontation, with both insulting the other. Kingston eventually challenged Punk to a match, with Punk accepting to set up the match. Later, Christian Cage and Jurassic Express challenged the Superkliq to a falls count anywhere match at Full Gear. The match was confirmed later in the night. Full Gear is set for November 13 in Minneapolis. It was a pretty big showdown. Check out how we got to these matches: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play]..
