It’s a gig. WrestleMania has evolved so much over the years that it is almost nothing like what it was when it first started. The show has gone from little more than a really souped up live event to a stadium filling event that takes place over two nights. Things have gotten so much bigger that it needs someone to keep track of them all, which is what we will have again this year. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Monster Fight: New Match Officially Set For WrestleMania 39 This week on Monday Night Raw, the Miz was announced as the host of WrestleMania 39. The announcement came via the envelope that Miz’s wife Maryse gave him last week. After making the announcement, Miz was attacked by Seth Rollins and left laying. WrestleMania has had a host for the last several years, with names such as Hulk Hogan, Alexa Bliss, Bayley and the New Day serving in the role. It is a tradition. Check out what the hosts have done over the years: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains vid..
They’re expanding. WWE has all kinds of wrestlers on its roster, including several developmental stars as part of NXT. Those wrestlers are often just starting their wrestling careers and are mainly in need of ring time. The problem is there is only so much time to go around in NXT, but now WWE might have a solution that can make things a bit easier on everyone involved. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: He’s A Wild Card: WWE CEO On Vince McMahon Possibly Stepping Away From The Company According to Bryan Alvarez, WWE will allow NXT wrestlers to work for select independent promotions. There is no word on which promotions will be able to work with WWE, but Booker T. has announced that NXT’s Ivy Nile will be appearing for his Reality of Wrestling promotion on February 11. WWE had a previous arrangement with Evolve Wrestling in the past but has not had such an agreement since. NXT is going to allow talent to work select indies going forward, which is a pretty big deal — Bryan Alvarez (@bryanalvare..
It’s less wrestling. The WWE Network was an absolute game changer for wrestling fans. For the first time ever, fans were able to see almost every major WWE event in history for a relatively cheap price. It meant there was more content available to fans and more was added at a regular basis. However, that might not be the case anymore, at least for certain wrestling programming. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: You’re Up: Royal Rumble Described As “All Hands On Deck”, What That Means According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, a WWE source says that independent wrestling content will be discontinued on Peacock. This comes after various shows events are listed as leaving in a few days. Shows that seem to be leaving include ICW, Progress and Evolve, though it is not clear if all of them will be leaving permanently. A wXw event is set to premiere this coming Sunday. A WWE source indicated to Fightful that they'll be discontinuing indie content on the WWE Network. https://t.co/DwMvG4msM2 — Sean..
He’s back. The WWE world has changed in several ways in the last few days and those changes might not be ending anytime soon. Most of the changes revolve around the return of Vince McMahon, who is now back in his seat as Chairman of the Board, but the question is what will he do with regards to the creative side of WWE. We don’t know that yet, but his influence is already spreading. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: There She Goes: Former WWE Star Officially Announces Retirement From Wrestling According to Fightful Select, there are rumors that since McMahon’s return to WWE, he has already been sending messages to various departments telling them that they are doing things wrong. There was no mention of which departments or what they were doing, or if McMahon is planning on making any changes. McMahon has yet to make an appearance on WWE TV and is reportedly only working on selling the company. There have been some blunders in WWE over the years. Check out some of them: [This post contains vi..
There is some more to it. AEW has quite the talented roster of stars and it makes sense for the company to want to lock up some of the more important members for as long as they can. In some cases this involves adding some extra responsibilities to their workload, which was the situation for one of AEW’s top stars. Now we know some more about how everything will go from here. Earlier this month, AEW President Tony Khan announced that AEW World Champion Jon Moxley had signed a new five year contract with the company. The new deal would make Moxley exclusive to AEW and its international partners while also giving Moxley coaching and mentorship responsibilities. There is no word on what kind of mentorship would be included. According to Fightful Select, Moxley’s status with promotions like GCW and Pro Wrestling Revolver is not clear, though he reportedly insisted on finishing up with GCW over the weekend. AEW’s the Firm appeared at the show to help Nick Gage take the GCW World Title fro..
Not going to happen. All of the recent changes in WWE have shaken up the company in all kinds of ways. Some of these changes have been very notable while others have been a bit more subtle. That is a good balance to have, but there have also been some things that have not changed, and now we know one of the bigger long absent idea that will not be returning in the future. During a new interview with the Ringer, WWE Executive Triple H made it clear that blood would not be returning to WWE television. Triple H said the world has evolved and that blood is unnecessary as what they do is already dangerous enough. Now bloody wrestlers are expected to roll to the floor to be checked if they are injured with referees putting on gloves. There is nothing to suggest that there will be exceptions to the rule. Opinion: This is the kind of decision that I like to see as there is no need to have wrestlers bleed during a match. It was a nice thing to see back in the day but getting rid of it is a sm..
That could be worse. Injuries are one of the few universal issues in wrestling, as anyone can go out of action at any time. It can be quite the ordeal waiting on them to recover, as any storyline could be stopped out of nowhere. That can hurt all kinds of things in a wrestling promotion, but sometimes the injury is part of the storyline. Thankfully that is the case again. Last week on AEW Dynamite, the Jericho Appreciation Society slammed Ruby Soho’s hand in a car door, seemingly breaking it. Soho appeared on this week’s show but did not wrestle, with Eddie Kingston swearing revenge against Chris Jericho for causing Soho’s injury. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Soho’s injury is not legitimate and is only a way to extend the Kingston vs. Jericho feud. Soho wrestled a match for Wrestling Revolver over the weekend with no issues. Opinion: That is a relief after AEW has suffered so many injuries in recent months. Thankfully Soho should be back in the ring in no time, as the injur..
History has been made! There are a lot of titles to be won in the wrestling world and some of them are a little less than traditional. With so many championships out there, it is easy to find one on the line at almost any time, even if they are not taking place on a show from the company that promotes the title. That is the case again here, as a title change took place this week. This weekend, Rich Swann defeated Matt Cardona to become the new Impact Wrestling Digital Media Championship. The title change took place at the Wrestling Revolver event in Las Vegas, Nevada, though Swann did not leave with the title. Following the loss, Cardona grabbed the title and ran to the back with it instead of handing it over to Swann. The title change ends Cardona’s reign at 114 days after he won the title on the February 3 Impact Wrestling. It’s another way to go. Wrestlers have a weird history when it comes to acting. There are a lot of them who are able to pull off acting outside of the wrestling world, but they are often stuck in a role that revolves around them being a wrestler or some kind of a brute. Sometimes that works out, but now a wrestler is getting a chance to try his hand in another kind of role. AEW’s Miro has landed a role in the pilot for a new series called East New York. CBS has released a trailer for the show, which features Miro as a man who has been arrested and is asking for a lawyer. There is no word on if the show will be picked up or how frequently Miro would be appearing. Miro has been missing from AEW television since November, due to a hamstring injury and filming the pilot. There is no word on when he will be back in the ring. He might have something here. Check out Miro’s appearance in the pilot: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: I’m not sure what kind of a future Miro ..
All the more gold. Titles are the most important concept in a wrestling promotion and often what the main stories revolve around. Anyone can understand the idea of a wrestler wanting to be the best so wrestling companies run with the concept. You can see a variety of championships in almost any promotion at any time, including the biggest in the world. That is certainly the case in AEW, but now they might be adding several more titles all at once. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, AEW has had a set of trios titles created a set of trios titles, meaning that the championships are likely to be introduced to the company. This is something that AEW President Tony Khan has hinted at before but nothing has ever been confirmed. There is no word on when the titles will be introduced or how the first champions will be crowned. Opinion: This is the kind of thing that shouldn’t be the biggest surprise as AEW has so many three man teams who could be in the running for the first cha..
The night is you. WWE regularly presents a lot of wrestling in any given week. Some of this is better than others, but there is so much content every week that it can be easy to forget some of it. The interesting part is that there is even more that fans at home do not get to see. That was the case again this week as a huge match took place after the cameras stopped rolling. As seen on Twitter, there was a six man tag team match after this week’s edition of SmackDown went off the air. Following the show, the team of Big E., Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens defeated the Bloodline. This was an extension of the show’s main event, which saw Rollins and Owens defeat the Usos when Roman Reigns interfered. Big E. had appeared earlier in the night, accompanying Kofi Kingston to the ring for his match with Madcap Moss. The feel good moment. There are a lot of different ways to present a wrestling show but one of the easiest is to showcase the most popular wrestlers around. There will be a core group of wrestlers on the roster who are liked above the rest, but sometimes a different wrestler stands out. This can often be the case in their hometown, which was the case for a special moment this week. This week’s edition of SmackDown took place in Bianca Belair’s hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee. Knox County Mayor Kane made a special appearance to give Belair the key to the county and Belair’s family was in attendance, but Becky Lynch appeared and attacked Belair to end the show. However, Belair faced and defeated Lynch after the show ended in the night’s non-title dark match. The two are slated to face each other in a title match at Extreme Rules. It was a possibility. There have been all kinds of WWE releases over the course of the year so far, as dozens of wrestlers have been let go from the company. This has been quite the shakeup as wrestlers who have been with the promotion for quite a long time are now gone. Some of them never got much of a chance, and now we know what kinds of plans some of them were factored into. According to Fightful Select, Arturo Ruas and Marina Shafir, both of whom were released from WWE earlier this week, were considered to be part of the new Diamond Mine stable in NXT. Ruas was told he would be part of the group until the middle of June before plans were changed. Shafir was going to be the group’s female enforcer, though it was not known when she would debut. The Diamond Mine, consisting of Roderick Strong, Hideki Suzuki and Tyler Rust with Malcolm Bivens as their manager, debuted on June 23. Ruas, also known as Adrian Jaoude, signed with WWE in 2015 and spent time in Evolve. He appeared on Mond..
Bring him in. Wrestling is one of the truly international sports as several countries have not only their own wrestlers, but also their own version of wrestling. That can make for some interesting combinations, as you can see wrestlers from one country coming into another and get quite the result. That might be the case again as WWE is interested in an international star. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE is interested in signing Speedball Mike Bailey to the company. Bailey is a Canadian wrestler who has mainly wrestled in Canada and Europe for the last several years due to visa issues in America. Should WWE sign him, they would work on resolving those issues so that he could could wrestle in the United States. Back in 2016, Bailey came into the United States and worked a show for Evolve Wrestling without having a work visa in the country. As a result, he was banned from entering the United States for five years, with the ban recently expiring. Bailey has also wrest..
Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over ten years now and have reviewed over 5,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Evolve 125 Date: April 4, 2019 Location: La Boom, New York City, New York Commentators: Lenny Leonard, Rob Niemi This is another one of the shows that I was hoping to see last year but for one reason or another it never happened. That’s where a free month of Club WWN (plus the company putting the show up for free on YouTube) can be handy and that’s why I’m here today. This show seemed to be pretty well received so hopefully it holds up. Let’s get to it. As usual, I have no idea what is coming or what is going on her..
There’s still time for one more. We are less than a week away from Takeover: WarGames and as usual, NXT has a lot of the work done in advance. They have covered almost everything that needs to be done beforehand but there is always time to add in something else. That is what they managed to do this week as a grudge match was added to the card at the last minute. While wrestling has evolved a lot over the years, there are some things that will never change. One of the biggest is needing people who know how to get down on a mat and grapple with an opponent. That’s where wrestling began and as a result, there is always room for someone with that kind of a character. NXT has one of their own at the moment and he will be in action on Sunday. WWE.com has confirmed that Timothy Thatcher will face Tommaso Ciampa at Takeover: WarGames. The match came about after Thatcher challenged Ciampa during this week’s NXT. It will be the first match between the two and is the result of Ciampa interrupti..
