We are on our way to Roadblock and then Stand & Deliver, which means we should be in for some big stuff over the next few weeks. That includes this week, as Bron Breakker defends the NXT Title against Jinder Mahal. Ok so not everything can be the biggest deal in the world. Let’s get to it. Trick Williams vs. Ilja Dragunov Before the match, Williams says that if pain makes Dragunov feel alive, he’ll be on cloud nine tonight. Williams hits him in the face before the bell so Dragunov starts angry. That means an angry headlock on the mat, with Williams having to bail to the ropes. Back up and Dragunov hits a running knee in the corner for two, followed by another such knee to keep Williams down. It looks like we have a title match set up, as Carmelo Hayes stared down Bron Breakker, who retained the NXT Title in the main event. That should give us a clear path to Los Angeles so let’s get to it. We open with the recap of Vengeance Day. Here are Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes to open things up. Williams talks about how Hayes turned seer Apollo Crews into Stevie Wonder before Hayes brags about his win too. Hayes knows his destiny and there is one man waiting for him. The show will feature Bron Breakker defending the NXT Title against Grayson Waller in a cage match but we’re going to need more than that. There is a lot of potential for the rest of the show though and we should hear more this week. Let’s get to it. Opening recap, featuring all of the returns and surprises. Trick Williams/Carmelo Hayes vs. Axiom/Apollo Crews Williams works on Axiom’s arm to start and then runs him over for a bonus. A pop up right hand puts Axiom down again and it’s off to Hayes. An enziguri gets Axiom out of trouble though and it’s Crews coming in to clean house. Hayes gets knocked to the floor so Crews tosses Axiom onto both villains as we take a break. It took long enough. Tag team wrestling has an interesting dynamic, as you can have two very talented wrestlers who have enough in common to make a great team. At the same time, there are often teams who are more different than similar, which can lead to issues. The big story coming out of last week is Roxanne Perez winning the Women’s Title from Mandy Rose, who is already gone from the promotion in a surprise. That means a title change can be a huge moment, but unfortunately this one did not go as originally intended. This week on NXT UK, United Kingdom Champion Ilja Dragunov was forced to vacate his championship due to an injury suffered in his recent title defense against Wolfgang. As a result, an eight man tournament will be held to crown the new champion. It’s their new home. While WWE gets the most attention in the wrestling world, there are other promotions throughout the world, some of which have their own national exposure. It makes sense for those promotions to bring in former WWE stars when they have the chance and that seems to be what has happened again. This time though, a promotion brought in two at once. AEW taped episodes of Dark this weekend at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. During the tapings, two former NXT stars made their debuts for the company. First up, Cole Karter, formerly known as Troy “Two Stacks” Donovan defeated Mike Orlando. This is Karter’s return to the company, as he wrestled eight matches before being signed to NXT. Between the influx of NXT stars and nothing major happening for a few weeks now, it hasn’t been the most exciting place. Maybe that can be changed this week as Kenny Williams faces Tiger Turan. Welcome to the team. One of the major benefits of the rise of AEW has been seeing several wrestlers getting the chance to shine on a stage other than WWE. That is something that has been missing from the wrestling world for a very long time now and AEW has done a lot to make things better. Now we are getting to see that again, as another former WWE star is making his AEW debut. As seen on images that are circulating online, former WWE star and former NXT North American Champion Leon Ruff debuted for AEW at a recent Dark taping. Ruff appeared on Sunday in Orlando, Florida in a match taped for AEW Dark, though it is not clear who he will be facing or when the match will air.
