One more time? Retirement is a difficult concept for a lot of wrestlers as they can have trouble walking away for good. While several wrestlers will says they are done for good, they often have the chance to come back for one more match. Back later? There are all kinds of storylines in wrestling, some of which might not make the most sense on the surface. Oftentimes, these stories are things that will not be paid off for a long time, as fans are left waiting to see what is going on. That seems to be what is happening again in AEW, as one of the company’s top stars is saying he will be gone for the time being. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Quick One: AEW Title Changes Hands On Dynamite In Surprising Fashion On Sunday at AEW Revolution, Bryan Danielson lost an Iron Man match to AEW World Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman, submitting in overtime to give Friedman the win. This week on Dynamite, Danielson talked about how he got where he is by never giving up and did not know what to do now. Danielson said that it might be time he went home before walking away. There is no word on when Danielson will be back on television. It was an emotional moment. Check out the promo, plus some of Danielson’s happier days in AEW: [This post c..
It’s a weird time. Earlier this year, Vince McMahon returned to WWE in a surprise move, ending his retirement from the company after about six months. McMahon returned to oversee a sale of the company, which is expected to take place in the next few months. That is going to be the biggest change WWE has ever seen, and now we know a bit more about what that has meant so far. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: She’s Out: Very Unique Reason For WWE Star Missing Monday Night Raw This Week According to PWInsider Elite, the backstage atmosphere is said to be one of “walking on eggshells” as people are scared for their jobs if and when the company is sold. The feeling is described as the same as it was before McMahon left the company in the first place, though the morale is still said to be better than before. The company is expected to be sold in the next few months, though it is still not clear who will be buying it. Backstage has been a rough area in WWE before. Check out how things have gone back ..
They’re still a thing. Nine months ago, Naomi and Mercedes Mone (then Sasha Banks) walked out on WWE on the same night, vacating their Women’s Tag Team Titles in the process. That is the kind of career altering change that you do not see a wrestler deal with very often, but the two seemed united in what they were doing. Now we will get to see them united again in a very different world. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Maybe Later: How WWE Nixed Plans To Bring Back Finn Balor’s Demon The Bar Rescue Twitter account has sent out a video advertising an upcoming episode. The video includes a clip of Naomi and Mone, though it is not clear if it will be in the advertised February 26 episode. While Naomi has not wrestled since walking out on WWE in May 2022, Mone has gone on to wrestle for New Japan Pro Wrestling, including winning the promotion’s Women’s Title over the weekend. Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over ten years now and have reviewed over 5,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net, starting today. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Elimination Chamber 2014 Date: February 23, 2014 Location: Target Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota Commentators: John Bradshaw Layfield, Jerry Lawler, Michael Cole Tonight is the final big stop on the Road to Wrestlemania with six men possibly leaving with the WWE Championship. It’s actually a wide open field tonight with at least three people having a realistic shot at walking out with the belt. However there might be an even more interesting match on the card with the Wyatt Family vs. the Shield in a ..
She’s worth it? One of the bigger moments of the wrestling year so far was the debut of Mercedes Mone, formerly known as Sasha Banks during her time in WWE, in New Japan Pro Wrestling. This was Mone’s first wrestling appearance in about seven months after walking out on WWE. It was a big acquisition for New Japan but now we know a little something else about the appearance. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: That’s Special: Bayley And Becky Lynch Receive Special Honor From WWE Before Mone’s January 4 debut, a rumor circulate that she would make more money per appearance than Chris Jericho during his most recent New Japan run. Jericho refuted the claim, saying that he was never given a guaranteed amount per appearance and was paid according to the show’s revenue. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the rumor, which has begun circulating again, is inaccurate, as Mone is not making as much as Jericho. She is also not making as much as she could make with WWE or AEW, but is working New J..
That could be different. There are all kinds of ways to present a wrestler and changing an appearance or character can be a big deal. Occasionally you will see someone get a complete character change, some of which can be quite the boost for a wrestler’s career. WWE is now teasing the possibility of a change, if a new storyline happens to go in the right way. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: It’s A Big One: WWE’s Backstage Reaction To Royal Rumble This week on Monday Night Raw, the Alpha Academy was shown walking in front of the Maximum Male Models backstage. After the Academy was out of sight, Maxine Dupree was seen looking at Otis and saying he was “perfect”. While not confirmed, this may suggest that the two teams will be feuding, or that Otis could be undergoing a gimmick makeover. Otis did not acknowledge or seem to hear what Dupree said. This could be interesting. Check out what happened, plus the two teams in action: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains vide..
Reunion? There are so many wrestlers on the WWE roster that it is difficult to find something for all of them to do. One of the best ways to deal with the problem is to group them together in stables. WWE has used them for years and that tradition continues to be the case to this day. It now seems that WWE is at least considering a reunion of a departed stable. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: And Done: Former WWE Champion Reportedly Now Free Agent, Can Wrestle Elsewhere This week on Monday Night Raw, Damage Ctrl was seen walking through the backstage area on their way to the ring. In the background of the scene were Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander, who were talking with MVP and Adam Pearce. It’s official. 2022 was one of the busiest wrestling years in recent history, with all kinds of changes taking place over the course of the year. That made for some very interesting moments as fans tried to figure out what was going on and where things were heading next. Now we have a major step forward, as well as what what seems to be the conclusion, of one of the stories. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Back In A Bit: Another AEW Star Confirms Injury, Promises To Return Soon Back in May 2022, Sasha Banks and Naomi both walked out on WWE, vacating the Women’s Tag Teak Titles at the same time. While there were negotiations for both to return to WWE, neither ever appeared again. According to Sean Ross Sapp, Banks is now available for wrestling bookings, meaning she is officially a free agent. Neither Banks nor Naomi have wrestled or appeared on a wrestling show since walking out on WWE, though Banks is expected to be at New Japan’s Wrestle Kingdom event later this week. Good morning. That’s a high honor. Over nearly the last two and a half years, there has been no one in WWE close to the level of Roman Reigns. After winning the Universal Title in August 2020, Reigns is climbing the ranks of the longest World Champions in the company’s history. He has become one of the most dominant stars in the company’s history and now he is being acknowledged in another way. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Catch You Later? That’s a lot. One of the most up and down stories of this year has been that of Sasha Banks. After walking out on WWE in May, Banks has still yet to return and as of last week, was reportedly “done” with the company. Instead she will be heading to New Japan Pro Wrestling beginning in January, and now we know some more interesting details about the entire situation. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Major Update To Bobby Lashley’s Monday Night Raw Status According to Voices Of Wrestling, Banks will be appearing for New Japan on a per appearance basis, “at the highest price” that the company has ever paid anyone. This includes even more than Chris Jericho, who according to Wrestling Observer Radio, was making $100,000 per appearance, starting in 2018. Banks is set for multiple dates with New Japan, but she will be able to work on other projects, including AEW if she likes. There is no word on Banks working in any American promotions at the moment. New Japan is getting a major star. Check ..
That’s a game changer. There have been all kinds of wrestling stories this year and one of the most intriguing has been that of Sasha Banks and Naomi walking out on WWE. The two have not appeared on WWE TV since May and there is no word on when the two might be returning. Now though, we have an update on one of them that suggests that she will not be back at all. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Pair Em Up: 74 Year Old WWE Legend Offers To Mentor SmackDown Star Earlier this week, a report emerged that Banks would be appearing at New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Wrestle Kingdom 17 next month. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, outside of a last minute change, Banks is considered “done” with WWE. The two sides are said to be very far apart on money and Banks’ current contract is expected to expire at the end of the year. Banks is not expected to wrestle at Wrestle Kingdom but she does have more dates set with the company for after the show. Banks is a star when she is in the ring. Check out what s..
That could make things awkward. Wrestling has changed quite a bit in the last few decades, as WWE has allowed wrestlers to stay in one place for a lot longer than they might have back in the territory days. That means wrestlers are going to be seen for a good while, which in this case led to a rather unique situation between two wrestlers, one of whom is a good bit older. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Double Trouble: Roman Reigns And Drew McIntyre Suffer Same Injury In Same Match According to the Sportster, Sasha Banks was interviewed by MTV’s Total Request Live in 2018 and revealed that when she was a child, she had a crush on SmackDown’s Sheamus. Banks, 14 years younger than Sheamus, said that she thought Sheamus was cute when she was a child. Sheamus is currently a SmackDown star while Banks has been absent from WWE since walking out on the company in May. This could have been an interesting pair. Everyone has to hang it up sometime. Wrestlers can have a hard time walking away from the industry as you never know how long it might be before they can get out of the ring. So often a wrestler might try to have one more run or one more match, making retirements fairly rare. Now though, one former WWE star has announced his retirement and had his last match. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: No More: 53 Year Old Wrestling Legend Announces 2023 Is His Last Year In The Ring Over the weekend, Nova, formerly known as Simon Dean in WWE, wrestled his last match at a Stand Alone Wrestling event in his hometown of Tom’s River, New Jersey. That’s not a good way to go. Wrestling is a unique business to say the least, as there are certain things that are done in the industry that would make no sense elsewhere. This ranges from how the workers are presented to how they are always on the move, the latter of which can get expensive. That can turn into a bigger problem if you annoy your boss, and that is what someone did to the biggest boss in wrestling. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Yes Chance: Important Update On Vince McMahon Documentary During his YouTube show, former WWE personality Dutch Mantell revealed that James Dundee, formerly known as JC Ice during his time in WWE, was paid $100 for WrestleMania 13. Dundee had angered McMahon in some way and was paid $100 for getting involved in the Chicago Street Fight at WrestleMania 13. Mantell said this was far lower than the normal amount managers were paid for just walking to the ring at this point. In addition, Mantell said Dundee did not complain about the pay as McMahon was lo..
They might need counseling. Teams and groups have a long history in wrestling as there have been people paired together for years. These pairings can go in a variety of directions, but sometimes they go south rather quickly. You never know when you are going to see a team have problems or even split up, but a successful one seems to be done following this weekend. One of the featured matches at this weekend’s AEW Full Gear 2022 saw the Acclaimed successfully defend the AEW Tag Team Titles against Swerve In Our Glory (Keith Lee/Swerve Strickland). During the match, Strickland wanted Lee to use a pair of pliers but Lee refused. As a result, Strickland slapped Lee in the face, resulting in Lee walking away. Strickland was left to fight on his own and was pinned shortly thereafter. The team did well while they lasted. That could be worse. There are all kinds of injuries a wrestler can suffer and some of them are very different than others. You never know when someone is going to go out of action out of nowhere and the amount of time they are going to be on the shelf can vary greatly. Now we know about another WWE star who is on the injured list, but it might not be as bad as it seems. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Ouch: SmackDown Star Out Of Action Three Months Following Surgery According to Ringside News, Rey Mysterio was in a walking boot backstage at this week’s SmackDown. The specifics of Mysterio’s injury are not clear but it is described as short term. There is no word on when he will be back in the ring or when the injury originally took place. Mysterio last wrestled in a six man tag in Mexico City at a WWE live event on October 30. A healthy Mysterio is still pretty awesome. It has to end at some point. Wrestlers have an interesting situation with retiring. While more mainstream athletes are able to hang it up at the end of a season, wrestlers have to pick and choose after an individual match. A lot of wrestlers have some trouble walking away, but now a former WWE star has made the decision and seems to be happy with what she is doing. Former WWE and Impact Wrestling star Taryn Terrell, also known as Tiffany during her time in WWE, has announced via her Instagram that she is retiring from wrestling. Terrell said that she was happy with her most recent run in the NWA, where she wanted to feel the rush of getting in the ring again. Terrell also mentioned that she is continuing with her stunt work. The NWA has also posted a message saying that Terrell will be missed. Terrell, 36, debuted in 2007 and is a former Impact Wrestling Knockouts Champion. That’s it? There are a lot of titles under the WWE umbrella and some of them are among the most well known championships in all of wrestling. It means a lot for a wrestler to win one of them but it can also mean a lot for someone to lose it as well. This time though, someone seemed to have lost a title, though not in the traditional way. She might even be happy about it. This week on Monday Night Raw, Nikki Cross defeated Dana Brooke to become the new 24/7 Champion. Later in the night, Cross was seen walking backstage where she threw the title in the trash without saying anything. While not confirmed, this could suggest that the title is being dropped, possibly as a call back to the WWF Women’s Title being dropped in the trash on Monday Nitro in 1995. The title had been active since May 2019. Opinion: At the end of the day, the 24/7 Title has been around for about three and a half years but it has lost a lot of steam in recent months. The title is almost never seen on WWE TV and is r..
