Gold Day: Six New Champions Crowned Over Two Different Events

Hand them over. Titles are one of the most important concepts in all of wrestling. They represent the best and often most talented stars in the promotion and are often the main focal points. It can mean a lot when a title changes hands and there are nights when several of them change hands during the same show. That was the case this weekend, with a special double shot. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Better Than Nothing? Tony Khan Announces Upcoming Weekly Ring Of Honor Series There were two major events held on Saturday, with Ring Of Honor Final Battle and NXT Deadline. Between the two shows, there were eight title matches with six title changes. The following titles changed hands at Final Battle: • Athena defeated Mercedes Martinez to win the Women’s Title • The Embassy defeated Dalton Castle and the Boys to win the Six Man Tag Team Titles • Wheeler Yuta defeated Daniel Garcia to win the Pure Title • The Briscoes defeated FTR in a Double Dog Collar match to win the Tag Team Titles • Claud..

AEW Champion Reportedly Unhappy With Lack Of TV Time

Can you blame her? AEW has come a very long way in a relatively short time and are regularly running two television series every week. That is a tricky situation to pull off but the company manages to make it work on a regular basis. Things might not be as easy as they seem though, as one of the company’s more prominent wrestlers is not happy with how she is being presented. According to Fightful Select, there has been some discussion of frustration backstage from AEW Women’s Champion Thunder Rosa over her presence on AEW TV. Rosa is reportedly unhappy that her title has taken a backseat to Jade Cargill’s TBS Title and Mercedes Martinez’s Ring Of Honor Women’s Title. Rosa was not on this week’s edition of Dynamite, though this was reported to have been due to an illness. Opinion: Can you blame Rosa for not being happy with things? She really is second to Cargill and probably also Britt Baker (I’m not sure I would say the same about Martinez) and that must be frustrating. Rosa is a ve..

(Very Unique) History Has Been Made! Title Change On AEW Dynamite

History has been made! We are in a very interesting time in wrestling as the lines between the companies have virtually gone away. You can see wrestlers show up in one national company after another and it makes for a series of interesting matches. Some of them can be rather interesting and a title can make them even better. That was the case this week with a rather intricate situation. This week on AEW Dynamite, Interim Ring Of Honor Women’s Champion Mercedes Martinez defeated Ring Of Honor Women’s Champion Deonna Purrazzo to unify the titles. The match saw Martinez, an AEW wrestler defeat Purrazzo, an Impact Wrestling wrestler, for a Ring Of Honor title. There is no word on if Purrazzo will be making regular appearances for AEW going forward. Opinion: This is something that sounded like a good idea on paper but AEW did not do the best job of hyping up the match. The match had quite the unique setup but it was treated as just another match that happened to headline the show. AEW sti..

AEW Has A Strong Night At ROH Supercard Of Honor With Big Title Haul

It was a busy night. There are a lot of titles to be won in the wrestling industry and some of them have deep histories. It means something when those titles change hands, especially on a show of magnitude. In his case, a lot of the titles had not been defended or even seen in a very long time, making the changes all the more important. That was the case this week in a big way. There were four new champions crowned at Ring of Honor’s Supercard of Honor 2022 event, which served as the company’s first new event since December 2021. First, Mercedes Martinez defeated Willow Nightingale to become the new Interim Women’s Champion, setting up a unification match with Deonna Purrazzo. Second, FTR defeated the Briscoes to win the Tag Team Titles. Next, Minoru Suzuki took the Television Title from Rhett Titus, followed by Wheeler Yuta becoming the Pure Champion by defeating Josh Woods. The show’s main event saw Jonathan Gresham defeat Bandido to become undisputed World Champion. Opinion: That ..

Maybe? Injuries are one of the worst things that can happen to a wrestler at any time as you never know how bad something might be. You can’t tell if someone is going to be out of action for a few days or several months and it can make for some rather scary moments. In this case though, you might not be able to tell if anything is wrong or not as the situation is not entirely clear. There are conflicting reports about AEW’s Thunder Rosa suffering an injury this week at Dynamite. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Rosa suffered an injury, though it is not clear when it took place. Rosa teamed with Mercedes Martinez to defeat Jamie Hayter/Britt Baker, setting up Rosa’s match with Baker at Revolution. However, the Revolution match is still scheduled to take place, injury or not. At the same time, Fightful Select is reporting that according to AEW sources, Rosa did not suffer an injury despite having her leg taped. As the Newsletter reported, the match at Revolution is still ..

Another Former WWE Star Makes AEW Debut, Signs With Company

Nice to meet you. There have been all kinds of WWE releases over the last year, with NXT taking the brunt of the punishment. The show has seen a bunch of wrestlers leave, many of which came out of nowhere. As a result, there have been all kinds of talented wrestlers flooding the market, and now one of them has found what seems to be a more permanent home. Former NXT and Impact Wrestling star Mercedes Martinez made her debut on AEW Dynamite. Martinez, under a hood, attacked Thunder Rosa during Rosa’s TBS Title tournament match against Jade Cargill, allowing Cargill to pick up the win. Following the match, Martinez unveiled herself and was chased off by Ruby Soho, who will be facing Cargill in the tournament finals. Martinez was released from WWE earlier this year and appeared briefly for Impact Wrestling. Welcome to @AEW, @RealMMartinez! WATCH: CM Punk Rips WWE Booking, Talks About Its “Formula”

I guess he isn’t happy. There are all kinds of changes taking place in the wrestling world these days and some of them are a lot more interesting than others. Perhaps the biggest in recent memory was CM Punk’s AEW debut, as Punk had been away from the wrestling world for over seven year. Now he is back, and believe it or not, he has something to say about what is happening in WWE. Punk was recently interviewed by Josh Martinez and spoke about what he described as the WWE booking formula. Punk mentioned that WWE has a history of bringing wrestlers back in and having them win the Royal Rumble before going on to main event WrestleMania, including Batista in 2014 and Edge in 2021. Both would go on to lose their WrestleMania title matches. Punk went on to say that he does not like such repetitive booking and wants to tell stories he finds fun. He made his AEW debut on August 20 and has gone undefeated since. Punk has been a force in AEW so far. Check out the interview and what he has been..

There have been a bunch of changes and moves to the roster this year and that was the case again this week. Even more releases took place to wrap up the week and a few names were rather surprising. Now the reactions are coming in. Friday night, during this week’s edition of SmackDown, WWE released more than a dozen people from the company, including a series of wrestlers and a referee. Updates On Two Wrestlers Injured This Week

That could be worse. Injuries are the kind of things that happen to everyone at some point or another in wrestling. That does not make it any better, but one of the worst parts is waiting to find out how long someone could be out of action. Every injury is different, which was the case this week as two wrestlers were hurt on back to back days. Now we know a little more about both. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Mercedes Martinez suffered a concussion during this week’s edition of NXT when Xia Li kicked her in the head. The match was stopped as a result of the injury, as Martinez was not able to stay down to be covered. There is no word on how much time Martinez could miss because of the injury, as concussions can take different amounts of time to heal. The other injury this week took place on AEW Dynamite, when Rebel suffered a dislocated kneecap during a tag team match. Rebel was breaking up a pinfall attempt when her knee went out, causing her to miss the rest of the match ..

VIDEO: Mercedes Martinez Hospitalized After Scary NXT Spot

It could have been worse. There are all kinds of ways for a wrestler to get hurt and some of them can come out of nowhere. You never know when you are going to see someone get injured and unfortunately it can happen right in front of your eyes. What matters most is the wrestler’s health, and that was the question again due to an injury that took place this week. Mercedes Martinez was injured during this week’s edition of NXT. Martinez was in a mixed tag team match with Jake Atlas against Xia Li and Boa of Tian Sha when Li kicked her in the head. The kick caused Martinez to fall to the mat where Li covered her, though Martinez was unable to keep her shoulders on the mat. The referee stopped the match seconds later and awarded it to Tian Sha, despite Martinez pulling herself by the ropes. According to Sean Ross Sapp, Martinez was sent to the hospital for further evaluation. There is no word on her condition or when she could be able to return to the ring. Mercedes Martinez was checked ..

NXT Takeover: In Your House Preview, Predictions And Thoughts

It’s that time again as NXT is taking over….well Peacock again, but that might work out just as well. This time feels different though, as I have forgotten that the show is taking place more than once now. This has not felt like the kind of build you get for a Takeover and that is a shame, as the show has earned its amazing reputation. There are matches on the card that look good though so let’s get to it. Mercedes Martinez vs. Xia Li We’ll start with the only non-title match on the show because NXT has become a promotion that is awash with titles, just like almost every other. Martinez is mostly a monster and Li is running through the entire division. You need to run over some people on the way there though and Li has marked Martinez as her next target. That might be easier said than done. They had a good preview: [This post contains video, click to play] Or maybe not as I’ll take LI to win here. There is little reason to think that Martinez is going to win as, simply put, she doe..

WWE RUMOR: NXT Stars May Be Eva Marie’s Enforcer

She needs the muscle. There are all kinds of ways to present a wrestler and some of them are a lot easier than others. One of the easiest is to put someone with a bodyguard to do their fighting for them. That is the kind of thing that has worked for years and still will today, which is a situation that WWE might be trying out one more time with a returning star. Last month, WWE began airing vignettes announcing that Eva Marie will be returning to WWE. She has mentioned starting the Eva-Lution, but nothing has been announced other than that. According to the WrestleVotes Twitter account, WWE is considering bringing in an enforcer for Eva Marie, with NXT’s Mercedes Martinez and NXT UK’s Piper Niven as the main options. There is no word on when Eva Marie will debut or when either of them would appear with her. Martinez is currently in NXT and dealing with Xia Li, though they have not wrestled a match as of yet. She has wrestled for over twenty years, with most of her career being spent ..

Two More Matches Confirmed For NXT Takeover: In Your House

Doubling up. We are less than two weeks away from Takeover: In Your House and that means it is time to start getting the card built up in a hurry. This is the kind of thing that NXT can do rather well, as they know how to set up a card without much notice. It helps when the shows are usually only about five matches long, so getting in two matches at once can be a big step. That was the case this week, twice. WWE has announced two more matches for Takeover: In Your House. The first new match confirmed for the show is Mercedes Martinez vs. Xia Li in a grudge match. This comes after Li marked Martinez as her next target last month. Martinez them challenged Li to a match, saying that she has been a marked woman for her entire career. If she does not wrestle before Takeover, this will be Li’s first match since March 31. Next up is an NXT Women’s Title match as Ember Moon will challenge Raquel Gonzalez. Moon issued the challenge during this week’s television show and will face Gonzalez’s p..

Backstage Reason For Recent New WWE Pushes

The international side. WWE is an international wrestling company, with television airing around the world and, at least before the Coronavirus pandemic, live events around the world. That means they have to keep things moving to make sure the audience is as interested as possible, both in America and around the world. Now they have a new idea to make that work. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE is attempting to push more international stars, particularly wrestlers from China. This is the reason behind Xia Li receiving a push in NXT and a feud against Mercedes Martinez, who is expected to help season Li. It is also the reason for a renewed push for Jinder Mahal, as well as Mansoor officially becoming a part of the Monday Night Raw roster. There is no word on if other wrestlers will receive such pushes. These three have some potential. Check out all three of them in action: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] [This post con..

NXT Live Coverage And Results – May 11, 2021

NXT Date: May 11, 2021 Location: Capitol Wrestling Center, Winter Park, Florida Commentators: Vic Joseph, Wade Barrett, Beth Phoenix It’s another double title night as we have two titles on the line. As a bonus, one of the matches, in this case Kushida defending the Cruiserweight Title against Santos Escobar, will be two out of three falls. That’s nice enough, but will it be nicer than Raquel Gonzalez defending the Women’s Title against Mercedes Martinez? Well yeah it probably will but that’s beside the point. Let’s get to it. Opening recap/preview. Karrion Kross vs. Austin Theory Non-title and Scarlett/Johnny Gargano are here. Theory is rather worried to come in but Gargano talks him into it, meaning the stalking can start fast. A clothesline doesn’t do much to Kross but his clothesline takes Theory’s head off. Kross looks annoyed at Theory and tosses him with a Doomsday Saito. Gargano offers a distraction though and Theory rakes the eyes to take things outside. A DDT on the floor..

VIDEO: Monday Night Raw Star Returns To NXT

Welcome back. With so many people on all of WWE’s rosters, it can be easy to see how someone can get lost in the shuffle. There are only so many spots available for any of them and it can become quite difficult to find something for everyone to do. WWE has a tendency to move them in and around from time to time and that can help a lot. Now we have someone back from Monday Night Raw on the NXT roster. Retribution has been around for a few months now and their record is hit and miss. The team is starting to settle down but there were so many weeks where it felt like WWE was making this stuff up as they went. It helps a lot to have a set lineup, and while the team has only been around for a little while, the roster has already undergone a change. Now we know where one missing member is heading. Here she is again. Check out a return on NXT: During this week’s edition of NXT, Mercedes Martinez made her return to the show, attacking Women’s Champion Hikaru Shida. This comes after Martine..

WWE RUMOR: Which Wrestlers Are Part Of Retribution

Who’s under the mask? There is something great about a masked wrestler. I don’t mean the kind like Rey Mysterio, but rather the kind where you wonder who is under the hood. You don’t see these things too often anymore but they can be incredibly intriguing. If the drama is built up well enough, the payoff can be worth it in the end. WWE is trying this, but the people involved might be spoiled. Starting back in August, a masked group called Retribution started to wreck havoc on the main roster. They have broken equipment in the back, attacked wrestlers, and just caused a bunch of chaos. That has gotten them noticed, but so far we have no idea who is under the masks. There have been a few hints and fans have guessed who are playing the characters, but who is expected to be revealed? WWE has some names in mind. According to Postwrestling.com, WWE has an internal list of five names who are considered part of Retribution. The five names are Dominik Dijakovic, Mercedes Martinez, Shane Thorn..

VIDEO: An NXT Stable Got A Lot Smaller After This Week’s Show

It was nice while it lasted. Stables are one of the best ways to get a lot of people on television at once. With so many wrestlers around WWE, you can only get so many people doing something at the same time. Even the most famous stable in history, the Four Horsemen, were created because they were thrown into the same interview due to a time crunch. One such stable seems to have taken a big hit after a bad loss. While it is not the most serious stable in the world, the Robert Stone Brand has been a rather entertaining group over the last few weeks. Stone has been a wonderfully goofy manager and has a few women to fight his battles for him. This includes Aliyah and Mercedes Martinez, the latter of whom has been helping Stone fighting off Rhea Ripley. That may not be the case any longer. It didn’t go well. Check out what happened after NXT: This week on NXT, Ripley defeated Martinez inside a steel cage, during which Stone had been attacked by Ripley. WWE has released a video from aft..

VIDEO: Star Making Return To NXT

Nice to meet you. There is a structured system in WWE, with names going from NXT up to the main roster on a fairly regular basis. That makes for some interesting developments and it can be fun to see when someone goes up to the main roster. At the same time though, that leaves holes in the NXT lineup. Someone has to replace them, and now we know someone who will be doing just that. The Mae Young Classic was an interesting idea for WWE and it helped boost up the NXT roster for a long time to come. There are all kinds of names who made their debuts in the tournament and then went on to become big stars in NXT, NXT UK and even WWE. It was a great way to replenish the division and it is not even done yet, with one more name making it up to NXT. During this week’s NXT, a vignette aired showing Mercedes Martinez was returning to NXT. Martinez has had two runs with the promotion, including her current time, which began with a return at the Royal Rumble and a win on the February 5 edition of..
