Hang it up. There are all kinds of titles under the WWE umbrella and holding one of them can make all the difference in the world. A title reign can change the way a wrestler’s career goes and losing a title can mark quite the fork in the road. There are different ways to go after the loss, but occasionally someone loses a title without losing a match, which is what has happened again. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Pick Your Side: Wrestling Legend Offers Controversial Take On Bloodline vs. Elite The main event of last week’s NXT saw Roxanne Perez defeat Meiko Satomura to retain the NXT Women’s Title. Following the match, Perez collapsed and was taken away from the arena in an ambulance. WWE executive Shawn Michaels has announced that as a result of the incident, there will be a series of qualifying matches tonight, with the winners advancing to a ladder match to crown a new champion at Stand & Deliver on April 1. The title has not been officially vacated. As of Friday Morning Roxanne Perez..
They might want to fix that. While WWE and AEW get the most attention throughout the wrestling world, there are all kinds of wrestlers who work throughout the industry but rarely get the same amount of attention. Those wrestlers work incredibly hard to make a name for themselves without the same backing that comes with working for WWE. Now two of them have a problem with something WWE is doing. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: NXT Champion Collapses, Taken Away In Ambulance In an interview with the Hudson Valley Post, independent tag team The Now (Vik Dalishus and Hale Collins) revealed that they have sent two cease and desist letters to WWE over the company’s use of the term “the now” in regards to Austin Theory. Dalishus said that the name has been copyrighted since 2006 and people in WWE know their names. WWE has replied to one of the letters and is looking into the matter. Dalishus also said that their next step is a lawsuit for trademark infringement. The team has been around for ..
That’s a scary ending. There are all kinds of ways to build up sympathy for a wrestler, all of which can be used for a big moment later. Some of them can be more serious than others, but the question becomes what happens after the initial moment. We saw a more serious one this week at the end of a television show, and now it could be going in a variety of directions. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Double Shot: Monday Night Raw Star And Main Event Officially Set For NXT Stand & Deliver The main event of this week’s NXT saw Women’s Champion Roxanne Perez successfully defend her title against Meiko Satomura. Following the match, the two shook hands before Perez collapsed without being attacked. She was taken out of the arena on a stretcher and put in an ambulance to end the show. There is no word on where this is going or anything to suggest that this is anything more than a storyline. That got serious. That’s a big step. Wrestlers are part of a very physical sport that can cause all kinds of health problems over the course of their careers. At the same time, there are other factors that can make things even worse for them through a variety of ways. That can be on display for all of them but there are time when things do turn around a bit. We might be seeing that again with a wrestling legend. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: The Bloodline In Action After SmackDown This week’s AEW Rampage featured a surprise return from Lance Archer, with his manager Jake Roberts, as the two made their first appearance since November. While speaking with the New York Post, Roberts revealed that he had been on oxygen for the last year and a half due to lung issues. Now though, Roberts is now only receiving oxygen at night through his CPAP machine. He is also exercising five or six days a week and riding his exercise bike for 45 minutes a day. Roberts called being cleared by AEW a pat on the back. Rober..
Welcome back. With so many wrestlers on the AEW roster, it can be easy for one or more of them to get lost in the shuffle. You never know when someone is going to drop off of the radar and not appear again for a little while. That can make for some annoying absences, but it can also make for some very nice returns. Two of the latter took place this week on the same show. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: It Fits: Important Details On Next WWE Event In Saudi Arabia, Possible AEW Competition Jake Roberts and Lance Archer made their returns to AEW television this week on Rampage. Archer, with Roberts in his corner, returned and defeated Bryce Saturn. This was Archer’s first match in AEW since the November 18 edition of Rampage and his first match anywhere since December 23. There is no word on why he was out of action or what is next for him in AEW. Archer is a monster. The important piece. There have been a lot of stables throughout WWE’s history but most of them follow a fairly standard formula. Most WWE stables are focused around one major star, with other smaller stars supporting them. Without the right balance, the stable is rarely going to work, meaning it has to be put together correctly. It seems a possibly returning stable is working to get the right centerpiece. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: International Incident: WWE Star Loses Title At Major International Event Earlier this week on Monday Night Raw, a backstage segment showed MVP talking to former Hurt Business members Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander. According to Wrestlingnews.co, MVP recently asked Adam Pearce (also in the segment with Benjamin and Alexander) about fellow Hurt Business member Bobby Lashley. There is no word on when or if the Hurt Business could reform. That could make for a heck of a team. Check out the Hurt Business in action: [This post contains video, click to pla..
Bigger than wrestling. There are all kinds of names in wrestling history, but very few have had the impact as Jim Ross. Over the years, Ross has been an on-air personality as well as a WWE executive who had several responsibilities behind the scenes. Ross is a true legend of wrestling, but now he is telling a story about something he did for a wrestler which was way more important than anything in a ring. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Farewell Then: Wrestling Legend Reveals His Upcoming Retirement Plans During a recent edition of his Grilling JR podcast, Ross told a story about talking to Sgt. Slaughter in a hotel. Slaughter got in the elevator and collapsed, with Ross believing he had suffered a seizure. Ross saw what happened and had someone call an ambulance, in addition to pulling Slaughter out of the elevator. Slaughter was able to receive medical attention and made it out of the situation in good health. That is an amazing story. Check out some more of Ross and Slaughter in better da..
That’s fast. The rise of AEW has changed the wrestling landscape, as there is now a brand new wrestling promotion offering wrestlers a new platform on the national stage. That is something that has been lacking for a very long time now and has resulted in several wrestlers being able to jump from one promotion to another. Now we might be seeing someone going back to their original promotion after making a jump. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: What Happened: More On Kevin Owens/Roman Reigns Incident At Survivor Series This week’s edition of AEW Dynamite featured a segment involving new World Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman attacking William Regal, who helped him win the title. Regal was stretchered out of the arena and taken away in an ambulance. According to PWInsider.com, Regal is expected to head back to WWE, despite reports of him signing a three year deal with AEW earlier this year. In addition, according to Fightful Select, there have been talents backstage in AEW who believe Regal is le..
Rampage Date: November 18, 2022 Location: Prudential Center, Newark, New Jersey Commentators: Jim Ross, Tony Schiavone, Chris Jericho, Excalibur It’s the go home show for Full Gear and the show has quite a bit set up in advance. The main story is advancing a tournament whose finals have been moved from Full Gear to next week, which is the best option that AEW had all things considered. Other than that, we have a special guest star so let’s get to it. Opening sequence. Full Gear Contenders Tournament First Round: Ricky Starks vs. Lance Archer We start in the back (as originally planned and with Starks in street clothes) with the two of them taking turns sending each other into a metal garage door. Archer sends a backstage worker into a bunch of chairs and now they head into the arena, with Archer dragging him towards the ring. A right hand knocks Starks most of the way over a barricade and they go into the crowd with Starks diving onto him. They get to ringside, where Archer runs hi..
Switch it up. AEW has been around for a little over three and a half years now and during that time they have established a schedule that they tend to follow for their major events. The company presents four regular pay per views, with the next installment coming this weekend. However, they have now made a last minute change, which will affect both this event and the next TV show. During a media call to promote Full Gear, AEW President Tony Khan announced that the finals of the Full Gear #1 contenders tournament have been moved from Full Gear to Dynamite. This comes after the first round match between Ricky Starks and Lance Archer was postponed due to Starks being not medically cleared to compete. The first round match will now take place on Rampage, with the winner facing Brian Cage on the Full Gear Zero Hour show. The winner of that will face Ethan Page on Dynamite. They have potential. Check out what we’ll be seeing on Rampage: [This post contains video, click to play] [This po..
That could have been worse. There are all kinds of issues that a wrestler can deal with while they are in the ring, some of which are a lot more serious than others. Those issues do not go away after their careers are over though and sometimes the issues get even worse. That was the case for a certain wrestling legend, but now things have taken a turn for the better. AEW’s Jake Roberts has announced that he is no longer requiring oxygen and will be back in AEW again. This comes after Roberts has been missing from AEW television for several months due to reported health issues, including reports that he had been receiving oxygen through a tube. Roberts has mainly served as Lance Archer’s manager during his time with the company. It is not clear when Roberts will be returning to AEW TV. Off oxygen for good!! Standing tall doing great. At AEW AGAIN!! Sweet life I’m living!! — JakeSnakeDDT (@JakeSnakeDDT) November 16, 2022 Roberts has been around AEW for a good while. Check out some of..
Drop it! There are all kinds of things that come together to make a wrestler a success. It takes the right balance of a variety of aspects, some of which is having the right gimmick for the right wrestler. At some point, that includes dropping something that isn’t working, which WWE might be doing again. This time, it involves taking away one of the biggest aspects of a particular character. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Run That By Me Again: WWE Announces New Match Type Coming Next Much (It’s A Lot) According to Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE is dropping Austin Theory’s selfie gimmick. Theory did not have his phone with him during any of his three appearances this week on Monday Night Raw, when he was being presented as a more serious wrestler. He is also set for a feud with Seth Rollins, possibly with a match coming up between the two at Survivor Series. Theory had a big night. Check out what he was up to this week: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, c..
It’s a different kind of role. Wrestlers have a complicated relationship when it comes to acting. While they are considered to be acting while on a wrestling show, they are also seen as only wrestlers. That can create a variety of issues, but occasionally a wrestler is able to land a more mainstream acting role. Now it seems that we are seeing another wrestler get an important acting role. According to Deadline.com, AEW’s Maxwell Jacob Friedman has been cast in the upcoming Von Erich Family biopic “The Iron Claw”. According to PWInsider.com, Friedman is will be playing Lance Von Erich, who was brought in as a replacement Von Erich. This is also why Friedman has been off AEW television leading up to Full Gear on November 19. There is no word on when the film will be released. Opinion: That is a major role for Friedman and even though it is a wrestling movie, it is still another foot in the door of some kind of a film career. Friedman is someone who can talk very well and the question ..
NXT Date: November 8, 2022 Location: Capitol Wrestling Center, Orlando, Florida Commentators: Vic Joseph, Booker T. We are a little over a month away from Deadline and for reasons I don’t quite grasp, Von Wagner is next in line for the NXT Title shot. The good thing is that match is set for next week so it won’t drag down a major show, but we could be in for a rough two weeks. Hopefully the rest of the show can balance it out. Let’s get to it. Joe Gacy vs. Cameron Grimes Gacy, now in regular trunks instead of his full body gear, has the rest of Schism with him and gets knocked into the corner to start. Grimes fights his way out of some quick trouble and elbows Gacy in the face. Back up and Grimes slips out of a fireman’s carry and knocks Gacy outside as we take a break. We come back with Gacy stomping away and we hit the Crossface. That’s broken up and Grimes gets in a knockdown. After stomping on Reid’s hand at ringside, Grimes hits a high crossbody for two. Gacy bails to the floor..
She’s not happy. There are certain wrestlers who are better as villains that heroes and the key is figuring that out. Finding the right balance and standing for a wrestler is one of the most complicated yet also important things that a promotion can do. Now WWE has managed to get it right with one of its top stars, which was on display after a match over the weekend. This weekend, WWE presented a Saturday Night’s Main Event show in Dayton, Ohio. The show featured Ronda Rousey successfully defending her SmackDown Women’s Title against Liv Morgan in an Extreme Rules match. Following the match, Rousey ripped up a fan’s sign in praise of Morgan and then stormed off. Rousey defeated Morgan in an Extreme Rules match to win the title at the event of the same name. She wasn’t pleased. Check out Rousey going after the fan’s sign: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: This is the kind of villainy that will always work. You have someone the fans want to see lose get in the face o..
Not going to happen. All of the recent changes in WWE have shaken up the company in all kinds of ways. Some of these changes have been very notable while others have been a bit more subtle. That is a good balance to have, but there have also been some things that have not changed, and now we know one of the bigger long absent idea that will not be returning in the future. During a new interview with the Ringer, WWE Executive Triple H made it clear that blood would not be returning to WWE television. Triple H said the world has evolved and that blood is unnecessary as what they do is already dangerous enough. Now bloody wrestlers are expected to roll to the floor to be checked if they are injured with referees putting on gloves. There is nothing to suggest that there will be exceptions to the rule. Opinion: This is the kind of decision that I like to see as there is no need to have wrestlers bleed during a match. It was a nice thing to see back in the day but getting rid of it is a sm..
It’s quite the introduction. Celebrities have a strange history when it comes to wrestling. There have always been famous people coming inside the wrestling bubble and at times, it can draw in an extra audience. That is a tricky balance to find though, as you do not want a celebrity with a small following taking up too much time. WWE has tried to find that balance, and now they may have again with a famous star. He just might not be famous to everyone. Triple H appeared on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast and revealed that he had never heard of Paul when approached about Paul appearing for WWE. In addition to people in WWE telling Triple H who Paul was, his children also talked about Paul, which helped show Triple H just how big of a star Paul is. Paul has wrestled twice for WWE, including last weekend at Summerslam, where he defeated the Miz. There is a lot to this. Check out the full interview: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: This is one of those things that ha..
The people let them know. There is an old Lance Storm line about wrestling audiences: there are a lot more people on the other side of that camera. That is certainly true, but there are often a good number of fans in the arena. While their numbers may be smaller, the feedback is instant, as a live crowd can tell you something in person. That was the case this week, but not in the most positive way. This week’s Monday Night Raw opened with a brawl in progress between the Miz and Logan Paul. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, this was done to prevent the live fans from booing Paul to open the show. Paul is being presented as the babyface in the story but is still being booed by the fans in attendance. He would appear later in the night, with the hope that fans would have the booing out of their system by booing him before the show began. Paul is expected to face Miz on Saturday at Summerslam. Opinion: I’m curious to see how Saturday is going to go at this rate, as Paul is the kind ..
