The San Antonio Express-News recently interviewed WWE superstar Kevin Owens to promote the upcoming Royal Rumble event this Saturday. He discussed a number of topics, including his upcoming championship match with Roman Reigns, Sami Zayn, Stephanie McMahon and more. Below are some highlights from the interview: On his championship match with Roman Reigns: “I don’t know if I expected it (to come full circle), but I certainly hoped it would,” said Owens, whose real name is Kevin Steen. “Because when our whole feud started, we were doing it through the pandemic in empty buildings. So it’s gonna be nice to have at least one match in front of an actual crowd, considering we had some of our best matches against each other with nobody in the arena.” On Sami Zayn: “(His success) is no surprise to me. I’ve known how good (Zayn) was and how special of a talent he is for 20 years now,” Owens said. “It just took a while for him to get into a situation where he can showcase just how good he is..
They have something to say about it. WWE is in the biggest state of upheaval in its history and it all centers around Vince McMahon returning to the company for the expressed intent of selling it off. That is the kind of thing that would completely rock the industry and it is going to change a lot of lives. Now some people involved with those lives have something to say about what is going on. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: In Better Taste: Jay Briscoe’s Death Caused NXT To Change A Planned Segment According to Sportico, the Detroit Police and Fire Retirement System have fired a lawsuit against Vince McMahon, attempting to prevent McMahon from taking over the Board Of Directors. The lawsuit claims that McMahon breached his fiduciary duties by trying to “impose his personal will on WWE and it’s ‘board’”. It also refers to McMahon’s return to the company as a “corrupt and unlawful dealing” following the Board Of Directors’ previous decision to not reinstate McMahon. There is no word on when th..
The boss is back. WWE issued a press release today, announcing that its Board of Directors has unanimously elected Vince McMahon Executive Chairman of the Board. In addition, Stephanie McMahon has resigned as co-CEO and Chairwoman of the Board and Nick Khan will serve as the company’s sole CEO. Statements from several executives were issued in the press release: Vince McMahon: “First, I’d like to express my full support for Stephanie’s personal decision. I’ll forever be grateful that she offered to step in during my absence and I’m truly proud of the job she did co-leading WWE. Stephanie has always been the ultimate ambassador for our company, and her decades of contributions have left an immeasurable impact on our brand. “I’m proud to announce that Nick Khan will serve as WWE CEO. Nick’s business acumen and mastery of the media industry have helped catapult our business to record revenue and profitability. Together, we look forward to working with the Board at this critical moment ..
That’s bad. Wrestlers have to deal with a lot of health and injury issues when they are in the ring and those things can catch up to them in a hurry. Over time they are going to build up no matter what, but those are not even counting other health concerns they might have outside of the ring. Now a legend is having a very serious problem, years after he last set foot in the ring. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Room For One More? Former WWE Star Hints At Returning With Old Partner Former NWA World Champion Barry Windham suffered a heart attack on Friday evening and has undergone emergency surgery to save his life, leaving him in ICU. However, Windham does not have health insurance, resulting in a GoFundMe being set up (which you can donate to right here). Windham, 62, is a former member of the Four Horsemen and won multiple titles in WCW/Jim Crockett Promotions, plus the WWF World Tag Team Titles with Mike Rotunda as the US Express. It seemed to work. With so many wrestlers around today, it can be a little bit difficult to find time for everyone to make an impression. One of the easiest ways is to put people together in a team, but even then they have to be established in some way. This can be tricky to do as well, but AEW pulled it off this week. It turns out they had a pretty long term plan in mind. Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland won the AEW Tag Team Titles in the main event of this week’s edition of Dynamite. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the title change was a long term plan and the match was designed to elevate Lee/Strickland and Team Taz up to the next level. This came as the Hardys, Santana and Ortiz and Jurassic Express are all gone for the time being for various reasons. Strickland and Lee’s tension over the last few weeks was included as a way to continue teasing a possible breakup and make their win a surprise. Opinion: The best thing that can be said about the title change is that ..
It’s a new direction. There are several different ways to present any given wrestler in the world and sometimes they need to do something new. You can only have a wrestler do things the same way for so long before a change is needed and that can make things all the more interesting. One of those changes might have taken place this week in a bit of a surprise. Two weeks ago on AEW Dynamite, Christian Cage turned on Jurassic Express and cost them the Tag Team Titles in the process. Last week, Cage explained himself but was attacked by Luchasaurus, who he then talked down and left with, seemingly on good terms. This week, Cage introduced Luchasaurus, who came to the ring in new gear and defeated Serpentico, only to attack him again after the match. This seems to mark Luchasaurus’ first heel turn in the company, having been around since AEW’s inception. Opinion: This is an interesting move on paper, but now we get to see what happens when Jungle Boy gets back. For now, the idea of Cage p..
That would have been different. Title matches are some of the most important parts of any wrestling show. A title changing hands can mean a new direction for the wrestlers or perhaps even the promotion as a whole. It can be a big deal to see a title change hands and that was the case again this week. However, it seems that things did not change as originally planned. The main event of this week’s AEW Dynamite saw the Young Bucks win the AEW Tag Team Titles from Jurassic Express in a ladder match. The match was originally supposed to include the Hardys but Jeff Hardy’s arrest resulted in the team being pulled. According to Fightful Select, some AEW wrestlers had heard plans of a possible Tag Team Title run for the Hardys before Double Or Nothing. However, Hardy was reportedly intoxicated in the hotel lobby over Double Or Nothing weekend. This combined with the Hardys vs. Bucks match at the pay per view ended any discussion of the Hardys winning the titles. Opinion: The Hardys are in a..
Double history has been made. AEW has only been around for a little over three years now and that time has seen the company build up its own history. The company has a series of championships and stars in its time and that means they are able to put together some very good things. That was the case again this week as history was made in more ways than just one. The main event of this week’s AEW Dynamite saw the Young Bucks regain the AEW Tag Team Titles from Jurassic Express in a ladder match. This makes the Bucks the first ever two time champions in the company’s history. Following the loss, Christian Cage, who had been serving as a mentor to Jurassic Express, turned on the team by attacking Jungle Boy. The match was originally scheduled to include the Hardys but they were removed following Jeff Hardy’s DUI arrest earlier this week. Opinion: I’m not entirely stunned by the Bucks getting the titles back, as they are the most famous team AEW has ever had. That should open up some poss..
It gets bigger. There are very few modern wrestling stars on the level of Jeff Hardy. After one of the most successful tag team careers in history, Hardy went on to become a top singles star and multiple time World Champion. However, personal issues have taken their toll on him, including another DUI arrest earlier this week. Now things have gotten even worse for Hardy. According to F4WOnline.com, following Hardy’s DUI arrest, WarnerMedia issued a decree that Hardy was not to be used in any more promotion for AEW programming. A ladder match scheduled for this week’s AEW Dynamite between the Hardys, the Young Bucks and the Jurassic Express is no longer being advertised in AEW’s official preview. In addition, according to PWInsider.com, Hardy has paid his bond and will appear in court on Tuesday at 1:30 PM. Opinion: This is the kind of thing that almost has to happen, and I’m not sure when Hardy is going to be back on AEW TV. If WarnerMedia doesn’t want Hardy on the show, he isn’t goin..
Not so fast. AEW has done quite a few things well in its just over three years of existence. One of their best things has been its pay per view events. The events are the most important for AEW as the company gets to showcase their biggest stars and matches. Those shows have to be followed up though, and now one of the followups will be a bit different than advertised. Following this weekend’s Double Or Nothing event, AEW announced that a ten man tag team match would take place this week on Dynamite. The match would see the Undisputed Elite face Jurassic Express/Christian Cage/Hardys. However, AEW has since updated the announcement and turned it into an eight man tag, with Jeff Hardy and Adam Cole removed from the match. There is no word on why the changes were made. See the fallout from #AEWDoN as a huge 8-man tag match is set for #AEWDynamite THIS WEDNESDAY at 8/7c LIVE on TBS, as #AEW World Tag Team Champs @boy_myth_legend/@luchasaurus team w/ @Christian4Peeps/@MATTHARDYBRAND to f..
That would be a way to go. One of the bigger wrestling stories over the last few weeks has been Ric Flair announcing his return to the ring. This has led to some questions, as the match is expected to be a six man tag, with Flair and FTR teaming with the Rock N Roll Express with a third person to be named. Now we might know who it might be and it could be amazing. During an appearance on Wrestling Shoot Interviews, former WWE star B. Brian Blair says that he is looking forward to seeing Flair facing Hulk Hogan, suggesting that Hogan will be the sixth man in the match. When directly asked if he knew for sure that Hogan will be the partner, Blair said that he did not know it to be true. Blair is a friend of Hogan’s and was Hogan’s first ever opponent. Opinion: This is the kind of thing that I could see happening, but at the same time I do not want it to happen. How much of a mess could it be for Hogan to be in the ring with Flair? At the end of the day, this is supposed to be about Fla..
The card keeps getting bigger. AEW has a pay per view schedule that is very different than what WWE does. The company presents a pay per view about every three months, which makes their events feel that much more important. They know how to put together a show that feels like a big deal and that is what they are doing again with Double Or Nothing. Now we know more of what they have planned. AEW announced two more matches for the Double Or Nothing card this week on Dynamite. First, Tag Team Champions Jurassic Express issued a challenge to Team Taz and Swerve Strickland/Keith Lee for a triple threat match. Later in the show, the Jericho Appreciation Society and the team of Jon Moxley/Bryan Danielson/Santana/Ortiz/Eddie Kingston agreed to meet in a Gang Warfare match, which will mean no rules and anything goes. Double Or Nothing is scheduled to take place on May 29. Opinion: I’m starting to get hyped up for Double Or Nothing as the show has mostly taken shape. One of the best things abo..
Yes, again. There are very few wrestlers who truly retire from the ring. For one reason or another, a wrestler will almost always return to the ring for one more run or even one more match. That does not mean it is a good idea, as there have been some terrible comebacks in wrestling history. Now another one is taking place, as one of the biggest names of all time is returning to the ring. After a few days of speculation, Ric Flair has confirmed that he is returning to the ring for one more match later this year. The match will be held in Nashville, Tennessee on July 31 as part of the Starrcast V convention. According to Fightful Select, the match will see Flair teaming with FTR to face the Rock N Roll Express and Ricky Steamboat, though no official announcement has been made. Flair last wrestled in September 2011 for Impact Wrestling. The Rumors Are True! I’m Going To Walk That Aisle, Style And Profile, One Last Time! July 31st! Nashville, Tennessee! The Tribal Chief was impressed. Over the weekend, a TikTok video went viral of a fan of Roman Reigns’ doing a parody of his entrance. This caught the attention of The Bloodline, who made a reaction video to this interpretation. You can see the parody and the reaction side by side below: @iamdikeh my brothers killed this imitation ??? @ebukadikeh & @realspecialnedu ???????? ? original sound – Tribal Chief. @iamdikeh We global now ?????! Congrats @ebukadikeh & @realspecialnedu . Thank you everyone for the tags. Thank you @WWE ? original sound – Dikeh [This post contains video, click to play] Paul Heyman and the Usos initially seem upset at this parity in the reaction. However, Reigns seems impressed, and once he expresses his approval, the rest of The Bloodline immediately begins to agree with the Tribal Chief. Reigns and The Bloodline recently defeated Drew McIntyre and RK-Bro at Wrestlemania Backlash. As of now, Reigns is not scheduled to appear at Hell in a Cell, but that m..
One more time (again). There are certain wrestlers who seem like they cannot completely get out of the ring. While some of them will stay away for a long time and then come back one more time, there are some who seem like they cannot get away for good. That is the case with one certain all time legend, and now it seems that he will be getting back in the ring one more time. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Ric Flair is planning to come out of retirement and wrestle again. This comes after Flair has released videos showing himself working in the ring with AEW’s Jay Lethal. While not confirmed, the match would possibly be Flair teaming with FTR against the Rock N Roll Express and someone else. There is no word on when or where the match will take place. Flair, 73, last wrestled in 2011 on an episode of Impact Wrestling in a loss to Sting. He still has something. Check out Flair’s latest training session with Lethal: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: I ..
He might have a future in this. Wrestlers often have a hard time finding a way out of the industry, as it is all they have done for so long. It can be sad to see someone hanging on for far longer than they should, but that is not always the case. Sometimes you see someone find a career that suits them very well, and that is the case again with a wrestling legend who will be continuing in an important role. Earlier this week, Glenn Jacobs, better known as Kane, won the Republican primary in the race for Mayor of Knox County, Tennessee, a position he currently holds. Jacobs ran unopposed and will move on to the general election in August. While holding office since 2018, Jacobs has continued to make occasional WWE appearances, including last week. Jacobs has also issued a statement on his victory: Tonight was a victory for our Knox County conservative values. I can not express my gratitude to everyone who has shown me support over the past months! It is my honor to serve as your Mayor...
Dynamite Date: March 16, 2022 Location: Freeman Coliseum, San Antonio, Texas Commentators: Excalibur, Jim Ross, Tony Schiavone It’s time for another major show with St. Patrick’s Day Slam and we actually have a rematch from last year’s edition. This week will see Thunder Rosa challenging Britt Baker for the Women’s Title inside a cage following their classic war last year. Other than that, Wardlow gets his TNT Title shot so let’s get to it. Opening sequence. Jurassic Express/Hangman Page vs. Adam Cole/ReDRagon Jungle Boy hurricanranas Cole down to start but gets sent into the corner so Fish can come in to crank on the arm. That doesn’t last long as it’s off to Luchasaurus, who sends the villains outside but gets kicked off the apron. Fish posts him to take over and it’s time to work over the leg back inside. O’Reilly twists the knee around but Luchasaurus fights his way out and the hot tag brings in Page to clean house. A sitout powerbomb gets two on Fish and Jungle Boy hits a big ..
Prior to tonight’s episode of AEW Dynamite, Tony Khan took to Twitter and announced that the upcoming debut of Brian Kendrick would not be taking place as advertised. This was due to a resurfacing of some comments that Kendrick made about a decade ago. The statement is as follows: We’ve been made aware of abhorrent & offensive comments made in the past by Brian Kendrick. There’s no room in AEW for the views expressed by Brian. We think it’s best for all that Brian be pulled from tonight’s card as we gather more info. We’ll announce a replacement bout ASAP.
