Tick tock? There is all kinds of talent on the AEW roster with quite the variety of wrestlers and stars. The company has found a great mix that allows them to present a bunch of different matches with quite the series of combinations. At some point, some of the wrestlers are going to have to leave though and that might be taking place again with one of its stars. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: And The Award Goes To: AEW President Tony Khan Names His MVP Of 2022 According to Fightful Select, Brian Cage’s AEW contract will be expiring in “a matter of weeks”, though there is still a chance that the two sides will be able to come together on a new deal. Cage’s original AEW contract was set to expire in 2022 but the company picked up his option, which reportedly surprised Cage, who had not been used much at the time of the pick up. WWE has also reportedly put on some “feelers” to see if there is any interest in bringing Cage in. Cage is set to face Bryan Danielson this week on Dynamite. Cage has..
Still no. Last week, the wrestling world was rocked by the death of Jay Briscoe in a car accident in Delaware. Briscoe was a reigning Ring Of Honor Tag Team Champion at the time with his brother Mark as part of the Briscoes. The team is one of the most successful of their generation, but they have not been allowed to work for major promotions due to some past comments. Now those comments are causing more issues. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: And The Award Goes To: AEW President Tony Khan Names His MVP Of 2022 On Wrestling Observer Radio, a fan asked about the possibility of Mark appearing on AEW TV following Jay’s death. Dave Meltzer said that the answer is no, though he did say that the answer could change in the future. This continues Warner Brothers Discovery’s edict that the Briscoes not be allowed to appear on AEW TV due to homophobic comments made by Jay on Twitter in June 2011. The Briscoes were a great team. That’s some praise. AEW has come a long way in just a few years and a lot of that has been due to its talent roster. The company has seen all kinds of people come through its doors since its inception and many of them have had quite the run. Only a few stand out as top stars though and now one of them is receiving a very special distinction from the most important person in the company. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Another Tag Team Splits On AEW Rampage AEW President Tony Khan appeared on the In The Kliq podcast, where he said that he felt Jon Moxley was the company’s MVP in 2022. Khan talked about how Moxley had been a great World Champion for the company and was there week in and week out, doing the best work of his entire career. Moxley helped form the Blackpool Combat Club and won the AEW World Title twice in 2022. Moxley did have a heck of a year. Impact Wrestling Date: December 29, 2022 Hosts: Matthew Rehwoldt, Tom Hannifan It’s the final show of the year and that means we’re going Best Of. It has been a pretty strong year for Impact, as there have been quite a few stars coming and going, along with some rather awesome matches throughout. We’ll also get the Year End Awards, which are often rather fun. Let’s get to it. Note that I’ll be posting the full versions of the matches shown rather than the clipped versions in the broadcast. Opening sequence. The hosts bid us welcome. From Hard To Kill. Impact World Title: Moose vs. Matt Cardona vs. W. Morrissey Moose is defending and it’s one fall to a finish. Cardona gets sent outside to start and Morrissey boots Moose down for an early two. Everyone winds up outside, with Moose powerbombing Cardona onto the apron. Back in and Morrissey hits some running splashes in the corner until Moose crossbodies him down. The middle rope chokebomb gives Moose two, with Cardona making the sav..
The other version. One of the biggest wrestling stories of the year has been the backstage brawl after AEW All Out. The brawl resulted in several major names being suspended and a reshuffling of the top AEW storylines. You hear about backstage issues like this every so often, and now we are hearing about something else that happened between a pair of AEW wrestlers. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Only Him: MJF Wins Award From ESPN And He Is Not Happy About It In the debut episode of the FTR With Dax podcast, Dax Harwood revealed that he and Bobby Fish got in a backstage altercation during Dynamite. Harwood said that he felt Fish was taking advantage of him during a match. The match also involved Harwood punching Kyle O’Reilly, who Harwood felt was getting involved in the altercation with Fish. Harwood said that the two had to be separated backstage but thirty minutes later, the two hugged and were fine. Harwood did not give a date of the match, but the only time the two were involved in an AE..
That’s not a normal complaint. You can often recognize a star in the wrestling world when you see one and more often than not, it is someone who stands out. A wrestler who acts differently is going to get noticed a lot more easily and that can lead to a lot of success. That is the case with one of AEW’s top stars and now he is being recognized for his abilities. However, he isn’t exactly happy with the recognition. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Delay Continues: AEW Wrestler Receives Bad Medical News ESPN announced its 2022 Wrestling Awards this week, with AEW’s Maxwell Jacob Friedman being named Promo Artist Of The Year. Friedman replied on Twitter, asking if he was getting a “f****** plaque for this bulls***.” ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski instead offered a DVD of “Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has A Glitch” with a picture hanger on the back. As a result, Friedman said “go to h*** Greg.” Read our best of 2022 in the squared circle. The only place that gives me a chance to opine on @LoganPaul and @T..
She’s #1! One of the most common things that you see among wrestling fans is a discussion of the best wrestlers. At one point or another, every fan has debated something about wrestling, often over who the best is at any given thing. You occasionally get something official, or in this case something close to it, as a wrestler has won a rather prestigious award. Pro Wrestling Illustrated has released its annual PWI Women’s 150, ranking the top 150 female wrestlers in the world over the period of October 1, 2021 – September 30, 2022. the award is based on a mixture of success, influence, in-ring ability, competition and more. The list has been released since 2008 and this is the first time that a woman from a non-North American promotion has ranked #1. Here is the top ten: 1. Syuri (Stardom) 2. Bianca Belair (WWE) 3. Thunder Rosa (AEW) 4. Becky Lynch (WWE) 5. Jade Cargill (AEW) 6. Jordynne Grace (Impact Wrestling) 7. Saya Kamitani (Stardom) 8. Charlotte Flair (WWE) 9. Starlight Kid (St..
And that’s that. WWE has long since become the biggest wrestling company in the world and as a result the company has more money than they know what to do with most of the time. That is quite the accomplishment, but it also means that they have a target on them with others trying to take some of that money from them. Now someone is going to, but it might not be what they had in mind. Back in 2018, tattoo artist Catherine Alexander sued WWE, Take-Two Interactive Software and the developers of the WWE2K video game series. The suit was filed claiming copyright infringement over tattoos that Alexander created for Randy Orton, which appeared in the game. WWE and the game’s producers claimed that the tattoos fell under fair use while Alexander claimed that she never gave permission for the tattoos to be used. According to PWInsider.com, the case came to trial last week and the jury found in favor of Alexander, awarding her $3,750 but no royalties from the game sales. Opinion: It may sound ..
It could be a worse situation. Injuries are one of the worst things that you can see in wrestling as you never know how long someone is going to be out of action. Someone can get hurt in the middle of a match and go on the shelf for a very long time as a result. One of the hardest parts of an injury is wondering just how bad things are, and now we know a bit more about what has happened. This week on NXT, Tony D’Angelo was injured during a match, resulting in the referee calling a stoppage and awarding the match to Wes Lee. Commentary suggested that D’Angelo had suffered a knee injury but no more details were given. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, D’Angelo will NOT need surgery and while he is hurt, he will be back “sooner than you would think”. Opinion: That is rather good to hear as you would never want to see someone go on the shelf for any length of time, let alone due to requiring surgery. D’Angelo is a promising prospect and I’m interested in seeing where he goes from he..
It truly is his kingdom. Tonight at the 2022 ESPY Awards, hosted by ESPN, Cody Rhodes picked up the award for WWE Moment of the Year. This was for his return to the company at Wrestlemania 37. Get your brackets ready. Wrestling is in a weird place when it comes to being a sport. While there are pre-determined results, there is no denying that the people involved are athletes and have some amazing skills. Those people are going to be able to use those skills to make fans care about what they are doing. Now we are getting a look at the best of the last year. Next month, ESPN will be holding its annual ESPY Awards, honoring the best in sports in the last year. This will include a Best WWE Moment Of 2022, with fans getting to vote for the winner. WWE has released eight pairs of matches that fans can vote on, with the next round of voting coming in the future. The ESPY Awards will air on ABC on Wednesday July 20 from Los Angeles. Here are the first round matches: MATCH 1 Brock Lesnar wins Royal Rumble Bianca Belair wins RAW Women’s Championship at WrestleMania MATCH 2 John Cena returns at Money In The Bank Ronda Rousey returns 4 months after giving birth to win Royal Rumble ..
It’s the risk you take. You never know when you are going to see a wrestler get injured. It can happen to anyone at any time and that is never a good thing to see. Wrestling is a physical sport and that means there is always the chance that someone could go down at any given time. That seems to be the case again at an NXT event, as a wrestler seems to have gotten hurt. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Tony D’Angelo was injured at the NXT live event in Largo, Florida. D’Angelo’s match against Cameron Grimes was stopped due to a shoulder injury with Grimes being awarded the victory. There is no word on the severity of the injury or if D’Angelo will be forced to miss any ring time. D’Angelo and his Family have been feuding with Legado del Fantasma in recent weeks. Sigh, it seems @TonyDangeloWWE suffered a shoulder injury at #nxtlargo Hopefully @WWENXT did some weird work and if not, hopefully the dude is alright. Happy Birthday! WWE has posted a new video to its YouTube channel, in which they show the full segment of The Rock’s Birthday Celebration From the May 2, 2011, episode of Raw. This is to promote The Rock’s 50th birthday, which is today! You can see the segment in its entirety below: [This post contains video, click to play] From WWE.com: It’s a shame birthdays only come around once a year. With all the cake, candles, and chaos, though, memories of The Rock’s celebratory bash should last at least that long. With the evening going full force, The Great One thanked the fans in his hometown of Miami and the entire WWE Universe for helping him celebrate. He was then joined by surprise guest Mr. McMahon, who offered some uncharacteristically kind words before unspooling a video tribute to The Rock. Then Grammy-award winning recording artist Mya was introduced and led the crowd in a rendition of “Happy Birthday.” None other than Samuel L. Jackson, Steve Carrell, Ellen DeGeneres, Dan Ma..
That’s a pretty sweet deal. WWE has long since been the biggest and most powerful wrestling company in the world. They also make by far the most money, with a lot of that coming from the simple idea of renting out their name. The WWE name still means a lot in the way of promotion, and that was on display again recently, albeit to the tune of a six figure payday. WWE has been promoting an upcoming boxing match between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano on its social media platforms. According to Sportico, the deal with DAZN, the company presenting the fight, has brought nearly $500,000 in to WWE. The deal was put together by Stephanie McMahon and the winner of the fight is being awarded a custom Raw Women’s Title. Fast turnaround. We are done with the biggest wrestling weekend of the year and a lot went down. There were major matches, several showdowns and big moments that changed the way a lot of stories go. This included a variety of title changes, some of which might not have been the biggest surprises. What was a surprise was having the title change back almost immediately. The Kickoff Show match for Saturday’s NXT Stand & Deliver saw Dakota Kai/Raquel Gonzalez take the Women’s Tag Team Titles from Toxic Attraction. However, Toxic Attraction took the titles back from Kai and Gonzalez this week on NXT, ending their reign at three days. This is actually longer than Kai and Gonzalez’s first reign as champions, as they lost the titles the night they were awarded them in March 2021. Opinion: I’m not sure I get this, as the title change felt lik the whole picture was changing. Apparently that is not the case though and now we have things right back where they were on Saturday morning. In theory ..
He deserves the attention. We are well on our way to WrestleMania weekend and that means it is time to wrap up all of the preparations. In addition to WrestleMania itself, WWE presents the annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony. This includes a variety of wrestlers getting their recognition, including one special inductee each year. Now one of them is receiving some extra attention. WWE has released a tribute video to Shad Gaspard, who will posthumously receive the Warrior Award at this Friday’s Hall of Fame induction. Gaspard passed away via drowning after telling lifeguards to save his son instead. During his WWE career, Gaspard primarily wrestled in a tag team with JTG as part of Cryme Tyme, though he did compete as a singles wrestler as well. It’s a touching tribute. Check out WWE’s special look at Gaspard, narrated by ESPN’s Mark Krigel: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: This is one of those tributes that gets more emotional the more I think about it, as Gasp..
It’s a different kind of promo. Talking is one of the most import important parts of a wrestler’s presentation, as the fans need a reason to care about who they are seeing. Working in the ring is important, but you need to make the fans care, which is why promos can be so memorable. A good talker can mean a lot in wrestling, and now one of the more famous ones got to talk in another way. Wrestling personality Johnny Fairplay and promoter Ron Gossett appeared on the Judge Steve Harvey Show, with Fairplay attempting to college $5,000 in unpaid appearance fees. New WWE Hall of Famer Scott Steiner appeared as a surprise witness for Gossett, saying he had been paid in full for working on one of Gossett’s shows. Steiner also threatened to beat up Fairplay and offered to wrestle him for the money. Fairplay wound up winning the case and was awarded the fee. This is the second time wrestlers have appeared on the show, after JJ Dillon and Kevin Sullivan were on the show earlier this week. Ok, ..
That’s quite the honor. Wrestlers are known for winning championships, but one of the problems is that eventually most of those championships are lost. A wrestler is known as a former champion, but that is not exactly the same thing as continuing to hold a title. There are some titles that last forever though, and now a WWE star has won another one of those, albeit in a different kind of wrestling. WWE’s Gable Steveson has won the Danny Hodge Trophy, given to the NCAA’s top wrestler. Steveson becomes the first heavyweight to win the awards twice, having won it last season as well. He also won the NCAA Heavyweight Championship for the second year in a row and is expected to make his WWE debut at some point in the near future, having signed with the company after winning an Olympic gold medal last year. Congratulations to @GableSteveson on back-to-back Dan Hodge Trophy wins becoming the first heavyweight to win the award multiple times! pic.twitter.com/dyM70fAZQW — WWE (@WWE) March 28,..
It’s quite the honor. The WWE Hall of Fame is one of the longstanding parts of WrestleMania weekend, with inductions taking place almost every year since 2004. You get to see all kinds of stars from years past being honored for what they have done over the years, but there is also a special award for people in another category. Now we know something else about this year’s recipient. WWE has announced that Shad Gaspard will posthumously receive the Warrior Award at this year’s Hall of Fame induction. Gaspard passed away in 2020 as he drowned saving his son in the ocean. Since his death, several people in WWE have pushed for him to receive the award, which is designed to remember the spirit of the Ultimate Warrior. the ceremony Takes place on April 1 after SmackDown. Opinion: This is something that is overdue and rather appropriate for both Gaspard and the award. Gaspard seemed to be one of the nicest guys in wrestling and died saving his son, which is about as heroic as you can get. T..
