WWE revealed NXT Women’s Champion Asuka suffered an injury during her title defense at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III. Asuka reportedly broke her right collarbone during her match against Ember Moon. At this time, she is not medically cleared and a proper timetable for her return was not disclosed. According to WWE, the standard recovery time for a broken collarbone is six to eight weeks — that’s based on a ringside physician who assessed Asuka this weekend.

In a statement to WWE.com, Dr. Jeffrey Westerfield said,

“During the match, she landed awkwardly from a throw from Ember Moon and was able to complete the match, but had notable pain and discomfort. We performed an initial ultrasound backstage that was highly suspicious of a break that was later confirmed by an X-ray.”

The injury comes as Asuka’s undefeated streak continued and approached the 507-day mark as champion. WWE has yet to comment yet on the future of the NXT Women’s Championship.

It may be worth questioning if Asuka’s injury could work as a storyline for NXT. She has been their undefeated Women’s Champion for over 500 days and, with no viable challenger in sight, the injury could serve as a method to vacate the championship and move Asuka to the main roster.
