The Asuka Reign Ends: NXT Superstar Relinquishes Women’s Championship
The reign of the longest-reigning NXT Women’s Champion came to an end on Thursday night. During the latest NXT TV tapings from Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida, and confirmed by WWE’s app alerts, Asuka relinquished her NXT Women’s Championship after more than 500 days as champion and less than a week following her latest title defense against Ember Moon at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III.
According to WWE, Asuka relinquished the title to NXT General Manager William Regal as she pursues new opportunities on the main roster. It was not revealed which main roster brand she would appear. Although she surrendered the title on Thursday night, the WWE will continue counting her championship reign until the NXT episode featuring her announcement airs on the WWE Network. The air date has yet to be revealed.

As Top Rope Press reported, WWE.com disclosed Asuka suffered a broken collarbone injury during her TakeOver: Brooklyn III match against Ember Moon. Based on initial assessments, a broken collarbone recovery time ranges between six to eights weeks. According to WWE ringside physician Dr. Jeffrey Westerfield, the injury occured during a throw by Moon and Asuka “had notable pain and discomfort.” It’s unknown if her title reign ended due to the injury or if the plan was to still relinquish the title during Thursday night’s NXT tapings. Following her TakeOver match, Asuka was in a segment where she vowed to continue as NXT Women’s Championship.
