Taya Valkyrie Talks Losing the Reina de Reinas Belt, Lucha Underground’s Future
Taya Valkyrie joined Chris Jericho on Talk is Jericho this week, in an episode recorded before the incident between Rosemary and Sexy Star at TripleMania. In Wednesday’s interview, Taya talks Lucha Underground’s future and her social media feud with Vampiro in the wake of being stripped of the AAA Reina de Reinas title earlier this year. “If this is part of an angle, why isn’t anybody talking to me?”
Jericho and Taya also discussed her “missed connection” with WWE, revealing she was once brought to FCW for tryouts and was offered a contract that was later pulled without explanation. In the wake of WWE’s sudden change of heart, having already left jobs and apartments, Taya managed to get in contact with Konnan and made her way to Mexico to continue pursuing professional wrestling full time.
On her mentor, Perro Aguayo, Jr.: “Perro told me the day he met me, day two or three, ‘you’re not going back, you’re going to stay with me, you’re going to be the first female member of Los Perros del Mal.’ He saw something in me.”
The interview is full of great tidbits about Taya’s time in Mexico (including Alberto del Rio’s brother teaching her to use the subway in Mexico) and the differences in learning the luchador/luchadora style verses other traditional wrestling styles. Her candid discussion of the aftermath of being stripped of her title sheds some interesting new light on her absence from AAA, and she opens up about feeling “backstabbed” after the incident with her title. “There are ways of doing it, and I just feel like it wasn’t done in the right way.” She also admits she’s taking time off from working in Mexico and isn’t sure where she stands with AAA, but still has an active contract with them.
Taya also spoke incredibly highly of her experiences with the Lucha Underground team, discussing the distinction between traditional wrestling shows and LU as more of a television serial. “We’re artists! We get to be so creative on that set. … as far as the matches go, we’re allowed to do so much creatively. ‘Just tell us where you’re going to dive!’”
Unfortunately, there’s still no update on whether or not Lucha Underground will be returning for another season. According to Taya, “Everybody’s super hyped and wants to do season four. It hasn’t been greenlit yet. Original we were told ‘the fall’ … well, the fall is coming.”
