The Miz recently reared his head again after filming a movie. He’s got his sights set on one thing and one thing only: the Intercontinental Championship. Roman Reigns dethroned him back in November, but the A-Lister has not forgotten. He’s back on the prowl, and he hopes to reclaim his gold.

But is Miz becoming an eight time champion really a good idea? For once, maybe it isn’t. Here are a few reasons why Miz might not be the right guy to defeat Roman Reigns.

Miz Is Already Established

Who would have thought that the Miz would be one of the most entertaining champions in WWE today? People hated him when he became WWE Champion, but he’s grown since then. He’s done so much for the Intercontinental Championship. He will forever be in the conversation for the greatest Intercontinental Champions. He could win the title and lose it 30 seconds later and he’d still be one of the best Intercontinental Champions.

The thing is, other people could benefit from a run with the white and gold. The Intercontinental Championship used to be given to guys as an opportunity to prove themselves. Sure, this led to some duds like Ezekiel Jackson, it also gave a spotlight to up and coming guys. Superstars like Wade Barrett, Cody Rhodes, Kevin Owens, Dolph Ziggler, Kofi Kingston, and many others all proved themselves while carrying the Great White. With Miz holding the belt pretty much all the time, it denies other superstars the opportunity that Miz himself took advantage of.

Think of cool and cocky Finn Balor running with his Good Brothers as the Intercontinental Champion. Or Elias singing about his new title. Imagine Samoa Joe putting to sleep all who dare look to dethrone him. Heck, maybe even Sheamus can win it so he can complete his Grand Slam and stop wrestling Seth Rollins, dear God.

It’s Getting Old

Ever since Wrestlemania 32, there have been 12 PPV matches for the Intercontinental Championship. Miz has been involved in 11 of those (the lone exception is Baron Corbin v. Dean Ambrose at Wrestlemania 33). That’s not even counting the numerous times the title’s been defended on TV since then. It’s crazy.

I like the Miz. I really do. You have to respect his work ethic, and his character work is amazing. But the Intercontinental title scene is getting old. Yes, he’s had some great matches (the Fatal Four-Way at Extreme Rules 2016, his series with Dolph Ziggler), but there’s also been its fair share of duds (Darren Young at Battleground 2016, Apollo Crews at Summerslam 2016). When Dean Ambrose arrived at Raw, there were so many new faces who could challenge him. Instead, it went back to Miz (another note: they should stop putting Ambrose in endless feuds [v. The Bar, v. The Miz, etc.]).

Miz really has done a lot for the title. His run on Smackdown was one of the best. On Raw, his reign was sort of listless, what with him talking a whole lot but not actually doing anything. Raw’s aimless midcard has suffered a bit, and while for a while Miz was also treading water, by having someone new claim the title, it gives them a new sense of direction. Miz can survive without the white and gold.

Russo is joined on today’s show by his co-host, Jeff Lane, Bin Hamin, and former WWE Superstar, Stevie Richards.

Russo wonders just how much heat he must have with everyone at WWE for him not to receive an invitation to RAW’s 25h anniversary show at the end of the month. Russo points out that even Bruce Prichard has been invited back for that show and he hasn’t, so he must really be hated at WWE.

Hamin points out that Russo’s name is forever etched in history for the work he did during the attitude era, and he doesn’t need to go back to WWE at this point to prove anything. Russo mentions that WWE loves “yes men”, and he’ll never be one of those. He assumes that the people in power there realize this, and that’s why he hasn’t been invited back.

Getting into their thoughts on this week’s episode of Smackdown Live, Richards says he has no idea what WWE is trying to do with the main event angle featuring Owens, Zayn, Orton, Nakamura, Bryan and McMahon. It all feels very confusing and convoluted to Richards and Russo agrees, pointing out that WWE is trying to force these 6 guys into a 6-man tag team match at WrestleMania in order to satisfy Bryan’s urge to wrestle.

While speaking to Between the Ropes, Chris Jericho discussed the original plans for WrestleMania 33 and revealed that at one point the plan was for him to face Nakamura on the card.

Jericho explained, “After we went to Japan in June or July I remember coming back and talking to Vince, and I said you’ve got to bring this Nakamura guy up to the main roster. I wanna work with him. Let’s debut him at WrestleMania. I said I’ll stay until WrestleMania if I can work with Nakamura. Vince said okay. Then about a month later, I said that I actually think me and Kevin Owens could work at WrestleMania.”

The Big Show recently spoke with Sports Illustrated. Here are some highlights from the interview:

His commentary work: “That’s definitely a possibility. That’s something I’ve discussed quite heavily with Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, and JBL. I need to sit down with Vince and Hunter to see what’s next for the Big Show. Vince is all about giving opportunity, and Hunter is, too. Doing color commentary to help get the talent over is not something I’m opposed to doing. I could speak from my experience, but my number one goal would be to highlight why you should pay attention to what you are seeing in the ring.”

Big Show on going to the indies: “That’s never crossed my mind, and it’s something I’ve never been asked. But let’s be clear–I don’t have the talent that Cody Rhodes has. I think Cody is one of the most underrated and underused talents that we ever let go. I was a huge fan of Cody, his ideas, and what he could have brought to the table, and I’m so happy that his success outside of WWE has been so good. Sometimes in this business, you have to go away to come back. You have to find out who you are. For me, at this stage in the game, I’m enjoying helping the next generation. I did everything I could to pass the torch to Braun. I had a hip resurfaced a couple months ago, so Vince and Hunter want me to finish on my main goal, which is getting healthy. Then we’ll discuss my future. There are a lot of projects I want to do with producing and acting outside of wrestling. As far as an indie run, I don’t know, but you never say never.”

Thoughts on WWE tending to rush storylines: “Sometimes, when stories are rushed or put together too fast, people can’t enjoy them. That’s the only criticism I have with our industry right now, it’s really tough to build stories like we used to. The writing was on the wall for my fight with Braun Strowman, because he looked like my replacement as the next dominant giant. When I came out in ’95, even though it was part of the storyline, I was known as the next evolution of Andre, the next giant. I was that young, athletic, trash-talking monster. That was my introduction to the industry, and I was able to build on that. Braun Strowman is the next evolution of that monster. He’s athletic and explosive. I think Kane is fantastic, but I don’t think people were ready for the angle between Kane and Braun or their match. Technically, psychologically, mechanically, there is nothing wrong with the matches, but people don’t like the story of the two opponents in the match. The crowd hasn’t been able to get into it yet, but with social media and our business, criticism is going to be a lot more prevalent.”

There is a good chance Eddie Edwards could be heading to WWE next year.

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest issue of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his contract with Impact Wrestling runs up in February and there is a chance he could be leaving the company.

WWE apparently has interest in signing him to a deal for him to work the NXT brand. The company passed on him years ago but that was when they had a negative mentality toward ROH talent.

Meltzer also mentioned that Ring of Honor is interested in signing him as well.

Russo is joined on today’s show by his co-host Jeff Lane, Big Vito and Kenny Bolin.

Russo says that while watching RAW this week he was amazed because against all odds, Jason Jordan is getting himself over. Jordan has been cutting great promos with lacklustre material and his work in the ring has always been steady, so in spite of the way he’s been positioned by WWE, Jordan is starting to make this storyline work.

He also says that all the marks out there who continue to criticize Roman Reigns need to stop because Reigns has proven himself to be a very valuable commodity to WWE over the last couple of years. His work on the mic and in the ring has continued to steadily improve, and in the last two weeks Reigns has almost single-handidly made two new Superstars in Elias and Jason Jordan.

Vito asks Russo if he wrote The Rock’s iconic catch phrase, “It doesn’t matter what you think!” Russo informs that he didn’t write that line, and it was actually The Rock who came up with that.

Lane says he absolutely loved the backstage interaction between Enzo Amore and Nia Jax and Russo agrees, pointing out that WWE can do a lot of creative things with that pairing. On the other hand, Russo didn’t like the Cruiserweight Fatal 4-way match because he thinks all the cruiserweight matches are way too choreographed.

WWE having Triple H work WWE Live Events could be a result to thet poor attendance as of late. They have already announced him as Mahal’s opponent on the December 9th show and added him to Sunday’s Survivor Series event. It remains to be seen if they continue to have him work more shows.

As previously reported, both Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn were kicked off the on-going UK Tour and sent back to the United States.

According to Pro Wrestling sheet, Owens and Zayn were supposed to “feed” for the New Day following the match between Zayn and Kofi Kingston.

The term feeling is: “The heel’s role during a babyface comeback where he runs at the babyface only to be repeatedly fended off, with the hope that the series of bumps by the heel will generate positive fan heat for the babyface.”

Owens and Zayn were supposed to do this after the match but left the ring instead for an unknown reason. It’s also being said that Owens and Zayn have been “slightly” difficult to work with and have appeared to be unhappy backstage.

In regards to fans believing that this is a work, Ryan Satin mentioned on Twitter that it is not.
