Over the past several weeks, key personnel in What Culture Pro Wrestling have left the organization, and with those departures, it looks like WCPW is undergoing a complete facelift. They announced yesterday that they are re-branding and becoming Defiant Wrestling.

The announcement was made alongside a YouTube video that revealed that Stu Bennett (the former Wade Barrett) will be the General Manager of the promotion, which will kick off under its new branding on December 4th.

18 months ago, we launched a wrestling promotion in a warehouse with a leaky roof. It was cold, it was rainy, we didn’t know if anybody would come. Since then, we’ve taken that same promotion all over the world. Worked with some of the greatest names in the business’s history, as well as it’s future. Packed out concert halls, exhibition centres, sports arenas, and WrestleMania. We’ve defied skepticism, we’ve defied criticism, we’ve defied expectations, misconceptions, preconceptions. We’ve defied the belief that wrestling is on the decline. We’ve defied the conventions of what some people think wrestling should be. We’ve defied everyone who said that this wouldn’t work. British wrestling is booming, and we believe that fans deserve a promotion that brings together incredible in-ring work and compelling drama, and puts it all in front of passionate audiences. We believe in taking these shows to venues across the entire country and we believe it should be available and accessible to everyone. We defy those who don’t. From December 4th, WCPW is relaunching as. From December 4th we are Defiant Wrestling. A promotion that will help showcase Britain as pro wrestling’s hottest territory. A promotion that will help put the very best talent in front of the world’s greatest fans. We can do this because we have the support, we have the skills, we have the belief and the passion. And we have the General Manager. We Are Defiant.

It was also announced that a dedicated subscription service will launch ahead of the December 4th PPV: Access Defiant. It will have a library of past WCPW broadcasts, along with new features including documentaries, a forum, and discount codes for tickets and merchandise.

As we reported last month, YouTube has changed its policy regarding wrestling and advertisers. Due to complaints from advertisers who found their ads running in videos that contained what they viewed as harmful and questionable content, YouTube responded with a “restricted list” for certain kinds of content that can no longer monetize video content. And, yes, pro wrestling is on that list.

Well, today, What Culture Pro Wrestling announced that a boatload of upcoming events have been canceled due to this policy.

“In a decision that has not been made lightly, WCPW must today announce that the forthcoming weekly Loaded shows at Manchester’s Bowlers Exhibition Centre will no longer be going ahead.

Effective immediately, our June 9, June 16, June 23, June 30, July 14, July 28, August 4, August 11, and August 18 shows have been pulled from our events pages, and refunds will be issued automatically to anyone who has purchased tickets to these events.

All other announced dates, including our PPVs and all Pro Wrestling World Cup dates are unaffected by this. Our initial June 2 show will also be going ahead as scheduled, and all tickets purchased for this are still valid.

This is a decision that we absolutely did not want to make, but unfortunately it has been taken out of our hands by YouTube.

Owing to a change in their monetisation policy, which has now classified wrestling as “non-advertiser friendly”, it is no longer financially viable for WCPW to produce a weekly free show of the quality our fans deserve.

Since the change the WCPW YouTube channel has seen its advertising income decimated, with our recent match between Alberto El Patron and Rey Mysterio Jr earning only $44 despite receiving over 1,100,000 views. This is a reduction of around 98% in what would have been Loaded’s main source of revenue.

Without that money, it is simply not possible to organise, set-up, manage, produce and edit a free-to-air show on the scale we had intended, and we’ve been left with no choice but to alter our business model. We’re not alone in this either, as other promotions, journalists, and fans have seen their ability to make a living from their content jeopardised entirely by this change.

While we support YouTube in their endeavours to make the site a safer and more tolerant place to visit, we reject entirely the classification of wrestling as a whole as “inappropriate content”. As such, in the coming weeks WCPW will be partnering with other like-minded individuals and organisations to start a campaign aimed at reversing this sweeping change.

Wrestling is not about violence. Wrestling is about scripted entertainment, amazing feats of athleticism and, most of all, story-telling. We want to thank all of our fans for their continued support, and we hope to have more positive news for you soon.

WCPW is not the only promotion effected by this, but as of right now, this is the biggest hit that we have seen a promotion take due to this YouTube policy. We can probably expect to see more of this in the future. Interestingly enough, though, WWE doesn’t seem to have any issues with getting ad revenue from their YouTube channel. I guess that whole “sports entertainment” categorization is paying off yet again.
