Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that it was Vince McMahon who put together this year’s men’s Royal Rumble match. Jamie Noble and Michael “PS” Hayes also assisted the WWE Chairman with putting the match together.

WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson, the individual that created the Rumble match, was also backstage at Sunday’s event to offer his expertise.

While speaking to We Are Defiant, former WWE Superstar Wade Barrett revealed why WWE decided to drop the “Brad News Barrett” gimmick because he was a heel that was getting a babyface reaction.

“I was specifically told the reason I wasn’t allowed to say my catchphrase ‘I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news’ anymore was that it was getting a positive response and they wanted me to be a heel. I personally didn’t agree with that philosophy. I felt ‘Look, if they are going to cheer for me, they like this, let’s go with it. I’ve never been a babyface before, let’s go with it.’ The decision was made above my pay grade and that wasn’t going to be the case and then I was Bad News Barrett, a guy who didn’t cut promos and wasn’t giving out bad news, so that kind of instigated the transition into a completely different character and the King run at that point, so for me personally, like I say, I didn’t agree with it but it wasn’t my decision to make ultimately.”

As previously noted, Triple H announced during a conference call to promote NXT Takeover that the War Games match will not have a roof on top of the structure.

“We’re not going to have a roof,” Triple H said. “I think it’s a little bit limiting. I think the style has changed. I’m not saying that anyone’s going to do it in this match, but I think going forward, I try to think about the future… look, Arn Anderson wasn’t doing moonsaults off the top of a cage (laughs). This allows for there to be a little bit of a different opportunity there to do some things.”

“I don’t think personally that we’ve changed the concept of what it is… there are some small tweaks, but I think they work better in today’s generation than it did in the format that was originally used.”

Dave Meltzer discussed the announcement on today’s installment of Wrestling Observer Live and said that Triple H actually wanted to have a roof on the structure. Meltzer revealed that it was Vince McMahon who decided against it. Vince’s ruling always overrules Triple H’s and Vince got his way.

X-Pac opens today’s show by speaking about his friend Jeff Jarrett, who appears to be going through a rough patch right now. Video surfaced of Jarrett wrestling intoxicated over the weekend and X-Pac knows that he must really be struggling with something, because he’s a complete professional who grew up and lived his entire life in this business. He hopes that Jarrett gets some help and is able to rebound from this rather quickly.

He points out that while the promoter of this show was put in an awkward position by Jarrett, if someone would have gotten hurt due to Jarrett’s inebriation, that would have been on the promoter for letting Jarrett get in the ring in the first place. X-Pac believes that if a performer shows up to an event intoxicated, they should be immediately sent home.

X-Pac gets into his analysis of Sunday’s TLC event.

To begin, he mentions that it was great to see Kurt Angle return to a WWE ring after 11 years away from the company. Some people criticized the fact that Angle was cleared for this match last minute, even though WWE still won’t allow Daniel Bryan to wrestle, but X-Pac points out that Angle’s situation is very different than Bryan’s.

As previously noted, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan passed away at the age of 72 after deal with serious health issues for the past few years. While there still is no exact word on his cause of death, we are able to confirm that it was just a few weeks ago that his health problems got worse.

Ryan Satan of Pro Wrestling Sheets indicated on Twitter that a source close to the Heenan family told him that Heenan became immobile near the end of August and that’s when things started to worsen for the wrestling legend.

In regards to when exactly Heenan passed away, Dave Meltzer mentioned on Twitter that it was just a few hours ago.

Lawler is joined on today’s show by his co-host Glenn Moore.

Lawler says his residence in Florida was lucky enough to escape the wrath of Hurricane Irma. He couldn’t believe the strength of this storm, and there were a lot of people who didn’t get quite as lucky as he did.

A listener writes into the show and asks Lawler if WWE-contracted Superstars are able to wrestle at indie events. Lawler says performers signed to contracts in WWE aren’t able to wrestle at indie events, but there are some cases where third party bookings occur when an indie promotion pays WWE’s fee to utilize a certain Superstar.

On the five year anniversary of Lawler’s cardiac arrest, Lawler and Moore discuss the events of that evening.

Moore points out that there are actually some conspiracists out there who don’t believe Lawler suffered a cardiac arrest that evening. They believe that it was all a part of a WWE storyline and that it was all a staged event. Lawler says that he can’t remember anything about it and he hasn’t had any lasting side effects from it, so sometimes he thinks it was all a hoax as well.

Dave Meltzer indicated on today’s installment of Wrestling Observer Radio that Goldust may be transitioning into a manager role. As seen on Monday’s RAW, Goldust will either be naming a superstar that he will align with at SummerSlam or he will simply be at the event to basically scout someone.

In regards to his program with R-Truth, the feeling is that it was a flop. The company’s thinking might be that rather than keep Goldust in a mid-card role, they might be able to use him and his mic skills to help elevate another wrestler.

There is now there is speculation that she was actually sitting front row during the main event match of Alberto DEl Patron vs. Lashley. Several photos of a woman in a mask were taken and people were speculating that it was Paige under the mask:

Alberto El Patron (Alberto Del Rio) and Paige are no longer an item, as Patron had decided to break up with her.

According to a source who witnessed the breakup yesterday, Alberto said that “enough was enough” and that he reached his limit and knew that it was time to break up.

Paige posted photos earlier in the day with Alberto thanking Jeff Jarrett for VIP treatment at Universal Parks.
