Before The Show

London-based PROGRESS Wrestling made its New York City debut on Saturday night, and it was quite a turbulent journey before, during, and after the show.

As Top Rope Press reported earlier this month, WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne was scheduled to compete and defend the title against fellow WWE superstar Gentleman Jack Gallagher. On Friday, August 11, Dunne was at another independent show in Brooklyn and was legitimately injured in the final moments of the main event against Darius Carter. It was later detailed he suffered a cut on his temple and required 11 stitches. The injury forced Dunne to withdraw from competing in PROGRESS’ NYC and Boston shows, which forced the creative minds of PROGRESS to come up with new plans for the over 1,000 fans scheduled to attend Saturday night’s show. Although he had to withdraw from competing, Dunne was still set to appear at the Elmcor Youth and Adult Activities facility in the Corona neighborhood of Queens, New York.

Upon entering Elmcor, you immediately felt heat from the reported 1,500 fans in attendance. The room was packed, difficult to find seats, but plenty of standing room. Fans were reminded not to enter the room with alcohol, but water seems to be the main beverage of the night in order to keep hydrated since there was no air-conditioning. Despite the sauna-like conditions, fans were ready for PROGRESS!

Showtime!

Holy shit. New York. #ProgressNYC has arrived. pic.twitter.com/0weCMmHG6A

— PROGRESS Wrestling (@ThisIs_Progress) August 13, 2017

Jim Smallman, co-founder of PROGRESS, kicked off the show by sincerely thanking the fans for being part of the wrestling promotions’ first NYC show and reminded attendees about Dunne’s injury. Dunne appeared and cut a promo about not wanting to fight in front of the New York crowd regardless of his condition. Jack Gallagher entered with a tremendous pop and welcome back chants. After Dunne said he owns the owns the WWE, Gallagher brutally quirked about the lack of Dunne on WWE programming. Gallagher came to fight, although understandably not with Dunne, and challenged anyone from the back.

Zack Gibson, who was originally scheduled to compete in a triple threat match against Mark Haskins and Mark Andrews later in the show, interrupted and received non-stop boos from the Elmcor crowd. If you need a comparison, think of the heat Vickie Guerrero received whenever she even tried speaking into a microphone. Dunne left the ring, and it was time for Gallagher vs. Gibson. After a good solid fight, Gallagher defeated Gibson.

Next, it was time for the only women’s match on the PROGRESS NYC card, which featured WWE’s Mae Young Classic competitor Dakota Kai and occasional WWE enhancement talent Deonna Purrzzo, who has appeared on NXT and SmackDown Live. Purazzo teamed with Jinny against Dahlia Black and Kai. It was a brilliant tag-team match which saw Deonna pin Kai for the surprise win. I call it a surprise, even though Jinny and Purrazzo did brilliantly in the ring, since it may have been expected Kai would get the victory since she’s now WWE talent and was promoted by WWE to appear on the show.

Donovan Dijack vs. Timothy Thatcher was next to determine the No. 1 contender for the PROGRESS Atlas Championship. For those unfamiliar with the Atlas division, as I sure was before the show, it’s solely for wrestlers weighing more than 205 pounds, purposely above the cruiserweight weight limit. Thatcher entered the ring with his manager Stokely Hathaway, making his PROGRESS debut. I was perhaps more hyped seeing Hathaway, a prominent figure in EVOLVE, than the competitors in this match. And it was a good night for Hathaway as Thatcher won the match and will compete against the PROGRESS Atlas Champion at a later date.

Before the intermission, it was time for the no-disqualification match between Jimmy Havoc and Joey Janela. I’ve seen countless stories about both guys but this was my first time seeing them live, and, as expected, they didn’t disappoint. Chairs, tables, cinder blocks, and even thumbtacks were used in the match. There were at least two moments when items were used that could have nicely finished the match, and I did groan at the lack of selling in those moments. Regardless, Janela and Havoc wrestled and entertained Elmcor and received a great ovation after the match, which was won by Havoc.

It was intermission time, and plenty of attendees used that time to get fresh air from the surprisingly cool Queens weather. Following the short break, we saw a marriage proposal from a fan who drove 16 hours with his girlfriend.

As mentioned earlier, a triple threat match was originally on the card with Zack Gibson, Mark Haskins, and Mark Andrews. Since Gibson was shifted to fight Gallagher earlier, it was assumed we’ll have Andrews vs. Haskins in a one-on-one singles match. Smallman, however, kept his promise of having a triple threat match and introduced Austin Theory. The surprise wasn’t over as Smallman introduced another competitor, thus making the match a Fatal 4-Way. Keith Lee entered with a great pop from the crowd. The match was a brilliant showcase of Haskins and Andrews’ agility, while Lee and Theory’s strengths were evident. This match was definitely the surprise hit of the show, especially the talent from Lee. Haskins won the match via submission on Theory.

The penultimate match of the show was for the PROGRESS Tag Team Championship, but we encountered further trouble. Champions Tyler Bate and Trent Seven, accompanied by Dunne, initially started the match against South Pacific Power Trip (TK Cooper and Travis Banks). Minutes into the match, TK Cooper flipped from the top turnbuckle onto Bate, Seven, and Banks. From a distance, the move was nicely executed but apparently the landing was not pretty. We see the referee checking on the guys and the dreaded “X” gesture was made, signifying there’s an injury.

TK Cooper’s ankle broke. Smallman and other officials were quick to determine the necessary steps to keep Cooper safe and keep the crowd calm. The crowd, however, remained quiet and shushed for complete silence while PROGRESS officials assessed Cooper. Full credit to Smallman who kept the show rolling by acknowledging Cooper’s smile despite the injury and thanking the crowd for their patience. The latest injury comes less than 24 hours after Dunne, who was still ringside with his fellow British Strong Style mates, was injured at another show. Coincidentally while Cooper was being assessed at ringside, a fan fainted, likely from the heat within Elmcor. The fan was immediately checked on, but the Elmcor crowd still stayed positive and supportive.

After Cooper was carried to the backstage area by other wrestlers, Banks went to the microphone and said the tag-team match’s purpose is no longer about the titles, but now about family. From a tag-team match, we now have a non-title handicap match at the request of Banks. It was perhaps the most emotional match of the show with Banks, Bate, Dunne, and Seven doing their best to provide a great show for the fans, and they did. Despite interference from Dunne, Banks pulled an underdog victory to an elated audience.

It was main event time with PROGRESS Atlas Champion WALTER against Matt Riddle. I’ve seen so much hype and positive feedback about Riddle, so I was ready to finally see him perform live. Perhaps the most memorable moment of the match is the excessive back and forth chops. You can hear the slaps and thuds from the chops and see the sweat flying off Riddle and WALTER. Riddle won the match via submission to win his second Atlas title reign.

After The Show

PROGRESS’ first NYC show is done, and it was definitely a rollercoaster ride for fans but no doubt especially for the show’s promoters. The fans remained loyal and vocal throughout the show despite the muggy heat and injuries. Hopefully this first NYC show served as a learning lesson as well for PROGRESS for their future NYC show, which includes a bigger room – since there was indeed a large audience – and improved restroom and air conditioning services.

After the show, the adventures for the PROGRESS team did not end and they encountered hurdles before traveling to Sunday’s show in Boston.

Flair Infringing GFW Champ’s Gimmick?

Perhaps coincidentally during WWE Monday Night RAW, Global Force Wrestling’s (GFW) United Knockouts Champion Sienna called out SmackDown Live superstar Charlotte Flair over gimmick infringement. Sienna, who also uses her real name Allysin Kay in other independent wrestling promotions, wrote she initially ignored the makeup and feather usage from Charlotte but the last straw seemed to be the pinky gesture.

“I ignored the feathers & the makeup, but the pinky? Really? If you need anything else from me, let me know.”

Sienna’s tweet attracted attention and responses from fans who acknowledged Sienna isn’t the first to wear feathers into the ring, with some people highlighting Chyna, Melina, and even Fandango for the feather entrances. The pinky gesture does seem baffling since Charlotte and Becky Lynch’s “pinky” gesture is actually the tea-drinking hand gesture whenever they hear or say something shady – such as when SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi asked Lana when was the last time the Ravishing Russian ever won a match.

By Tuesday morning, Charlotte may have indirectly responded to Sienna with an image of her father, Ric Flair, wearing an array of colors.

Sienna isn’t oblivious and tweeted Charlotte to appropriately tag her if the tweet was indeed a direct response to the United GFW Knockouts Champion.

Photo: WWE

You may recall earlier this year there was much discussion about WWE Network possibly investing in some independent wrestling promotions and beginning to air them on the WWE Network. The idea was floated in several WWE surveys, and there was discussion on the possibility of Ring of Honor, Insane Championship Wrestling (U.K.), and PROGRESS (U.K.).

The topic again came up at the Needham Emerging Technology Conference in New York City two weeks ago, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. WWE Chief Financial Officer George Barrios was on hand at the event and addressed the rumors. Barrios said that WWE and the WWE Network will indeed be working with PROGRESS and ICW in the future.

Barrios was also asked about ROH and other promotions and had the following to say:

“Yeah, I think there’s something there. It’s always priority and what once comes first. We recently announced a deal with ICW and Progress, which are wrestling promotions in the UK. So we’re thinking about the best way to utilize that content. As you know, we’ve been fairly active over the years in purchasing wrestling libraries, video libraries, a lot of which now you can see on the network. We think there’s a home for that, and it just a matter of priority.”

One would think that the deals with PROGRESS and ICW would tie-in with the new WWE U.K. Championship. It’s expected that the direction the company will take with these endeavors will become much more clear this summer.

Toni Storm Becomes Inaugural PROGRESS Women’s Champion

Women’s wrestling just keeps growing around the globe, and today, PROGRESS Wrestling crowned its inaugural Women’s Champion. Storm defeated Jinny and Laura DiMatteo during Day 2 of the Super Strong Style 16 tournament to become the promotion’s first female champion.

Congratulations to Toni, and congrats to all three women for making history in PROGRESS today. We will have full coverage of SSS16 along with Toni’s win when PROGRESS gets the tournament up on their streaming service.

Matt Riddle Doesn’t Want To Go To WWE Now

Matt Riddle has no interest in heading to the WWE any time soon. During a recent interview, Riddle said that he wants to work NJPW and is satisfied doing his own thing right now.

“I just don’t want to go to WWE this second. They have so much talent on their roster and so much going on. I am not saying things won’t change, but right now I am working in the Indies and building my reputation. I get to work the style I want to work 100 percent and no one is telling me what to do. If I went to the WWE right now, it would be a big deal, but not as big of a deal as it could be. I like wrestling right now, working tournaments, winning titles and going all around the world.

At the same time, I feel like there are a few things on my bucket list to do before I go to the WWE. I would like to wrestle for New Japan or at least wrestle in Japan. If I could be in Zak Sabre’s situation, that would be ideal for me right now. He wrestles for New Japan, Evolve and PWG. He wrestles for all the promotions I do, but he also does New Japan. I am very interested but have not talked to them directly. I have run into their people at the indie shows and that’s how I have been working my way into New Japan. That’s how I got my match with Shibata. I have another big match with someone from New Japan and they will have people from their office at that match. Hopefully they like what they see and say something. If not, no biggie. I am doing great things, but ideally for the resume checking off New Japan is my goal.

Maybe in the next few years, maybe five, then I can debut in WWE and make it a big deal. I would go straight into the big show, no NXT. Nothing against NXT, but I have done UFC and a fair amount of the indies. I feel like the route I am going, and the credentials I will have when I have that meeting with the WWE, I think the better. The more name value I have the better. The more undeniable I am the better. Then I can get what I want. Not necessarily get what I want, but yea that’s it exactly, to get what I want.”

PROGRESS Is Doing NYC

Top UK indie wrestling promotion PROGRESS is crossing the pond this summer for it’s New York City debut. The promotion announced today via Twitter that they will be debuting at the Elmcor Centre in Queens on Saturday, August 12th at 8:00 pm.

The promotion will be teaming up once again with EVOLVE and WWN for the show, and from what we know now, it looks like WWN might be streaming the show live on their service. PROGRESS has already announced that the show will be available on their VOD service about a week after it happens.

There’s no full card for the show as of yet, but they have announced that PROGRESS Champion (and new WWE UK Champion) Pete Dunne will be on the card, as well as PROGRESS Tag Team Champions Tyler Bate and Trent Seven.

CMLL Fires Several Top Stars

Things aren’t looking good on the lucha libre front down in Mexico. CMLL released an official statement today announcing that they had fired top stars La Mascara, Maximo Sexy, and Bobby Villa. The firings stem from an incident this past weekend where Mascara and Maximo Sexy basically destroyed Ultimo Guerrero’s car in the Arena Mexico parking lot this past Friday evening. The reason for Villa’s firing was not given.

Both La Mascara and Maximo Sexy have family in AAA, CMLL’s top competitor, so the men could easily end up working there in the near future.

It is once again time for a new PROGRESS Wrestling chapter to be consumed. PROGRESS Chapter 48 Bang The Drum was taped last weekend in Manchester, and the promotion has it available on their streaming service now for everyone’s viewing pleasure. My love fro PROGRESS is real and true, so I was more than happy to settle in for several hours of great UK indie wrestling on a gloomy Sunday afternoon. And, of course, the titles of the chapters never cease to tickle me.

In the main event of Chapter 48, PROGRESS Champion Pete Dunne would defend his title against Mark Haskins and Mark Andrews. Elsewhere on the show, Trent Seven and Travis Banks would face off, and Jinny and Martina would fight it out. We also saw CCK arrive on the scene in PROGRESS, and I have a feeling things are gonna get even better now that they are in the mix.

PROGRESS Chapter 48 Results

Flash Morgan Webster defeated James Drake.

I’m still not sure how I feel about James Drake; something with him just doesn’t click with me. Webster, on the other hand, is one of my PROGRESS favorites. Since returning after getting injured during the qualifiers for the WWE Cruiserweight Classic last year, he’s been amazing. The winner of this match would qualify for the upcoming Super Strong Style 16 Tournament, and Webster wasn’t going to be denied. He fought through everything Drake threw at him and came out the winner in this bout. Really good, hard hitting match from both men.

Jinny defeated Martina.

If you have not seen Martina wrestle in OTT or elsewhere, you are missing out. She’s tons of fun and endlessly entertaining. And, since she and Jinny can both kick some serious ass, this was bound to be good. Jinny wasn’t too happy having beer spit in her face to start this one off, but it’s Martina. It’s gonna happen, so deal with it. Despite all of Martina’s antics, she’s damn good in the ring, but Jinny is just a badass. She won in decisive fashion with the X Factor.

Pastor William Eaver & Chuck Mambo defeated The London Riots.

I adore the Pastor; Mambo, not so much. He’s just a damn goof; he’s funny at times, but he’s just not my cup of tea. This match did absolutely nothing for me. I didn’t really see the point of it, and I honestly zoned out for most of it, despite my love of Eaver. The Riots are a good team, but this match made me hit the fast forward button, and I never do that with PROGRESS.

Trent Seven defeated Travis Banks.

Whenever the perfection that is Trent Seven is on my television screen, all is right in the world. Plus, Travis Banks is freaking amazing. This was just great. Travis struck before the bell even rang, and the first part of this match was fought on the outside. Travis was not in a playful mood, and he just wailed on Trent with fist, feet, and chairs. After about 10 minutes, the two finally got in the ring…and the bell rung. Kicks and chops and forearms and slaps and back hands, and these two just beat the hell out of each other. It was so beautiful. And, Trent being the sneaky heel that he is had to grab a handful of tights to win this one, but damn, what a match.

Nathan Cruz defeated Rockstar Spud.

Yet another SSS16 qualifying bout. Cruz is hated, and Spud is loved. Damn, the Spud in PROGRESS is a million times better than the Spud in Impact Wrestling. Good bout with Cruz working on Spud’s midsection throughout, and underdog Spud coming back from everything Cruz threw at him. Spud couldn’t overcome the rib work in the end though, and Cruz won to earn a spot in the upcoming SSS16 tournament.

Matt Riddle defeated Tyler Bate.

Interesting matchup. Non-title on all fronts. Riddle’s Atlas Title wasn’t on the line, nor was Tyler’s WWE UK Championship. Needless to say that the crowd was firmly behind everyone’s favorite Bro, and Baby Moustache didn’t get a lot of love. This was….something else. Riddle has a certain style, as does Bate, and I am not sure they meshed well. But, I absolutely loved it. Some probably won’t like it, but I thought it was great. A lot of submission mat work from both men, strikes from Riddle, and sly escapes from Tyler. Bate is just so damn good, and he and Riddle played beautifully off of each other. Riddle would lock in a submission, and Tyler would just power out of it. Riddle continued his complete immunity to German suplexes, Bop & Bang made an appearance, and these two damn near just exhausted each other to the point of barely being able to get off the mat. Riddle got him in the Bromission, but big brother Trent came out to interfere, costing Tyler the match. Even with the ending, this was freaking amazing and a must-see match.

PROGRESS Championship Triple Threat
Pete Dunne defeated Mark Haskins and Mark Andrews.

At this point, I don’t know who is going to take the PROGRESS Championship off of Peter. It seems like he’s run through everyone available, and unless something very interesting happens during SSS16, which I am sure it will, Peter could be walking around with the title clenched in his teeth for a long while to come.

Really good, fast-paced, chaotic Triple Threat match. All three of these men are amazing, and they told a great story in this bout. Andrews was the underdog, Haskins took a beating and gave it back twice as hard, and cocky Peter thought he was invincible. Crazy good match, but once again, the other members of British Strong Style had to come out and try to interfere. Haskins broke that up, hit Andrews with a Pedigree, and retained.

After the match, Riddle hit the ring and got beat down. Peter got a mic and said that PROGESS was his, sports entertainment was his, and the universe was his. Then, BSS said that they had run through all their competition and there was no one left to beat. Not so fast, Peter….

CCK has arrived in PROGRESS. Chris Brookes and Kid Lykos may just take down Trent and Tyler and take their PROGRESS Tag Team Titles in the process. This is gonna be fun…..
