Russo is joined on today’s show by his co-host, Jeff Lane, and Glenn Gilbertti.

Russo opens today’s show speaking about the ongoing controversy surrounding the severity of Paige’s neck/back injury. He points out that PWInsider’s Mike Johnson reported that Paige’s in-ring career was definitely over, and then all the other dirt sheets ran with that news.

WWE failed to announce Paige’s in-ring retirement last week and Russo thinks Johnson should have been 100% certain before running with this news. Johnson needed to have sources and evidence proving that Paige’s career was over before he published that story in Russo’s opinion.

Speaking about Dave Meltzer’s 5-star rating system, Gilbertti says the one ingredient that can be found in every 5-star match is that the two competitors look like they’re actually fighting. Gilbertti thinks there’s a misconception out there that being a good worker means you can do all kinds of crazy offensive moves. In reality, being a good worker means you can make your opponent’s offence look good.

He urges all young wrestlers today to watch Bret Hart versus Steve Austin from WrestleMania 12 because that was the best match of all time in his opinion, and both guys looked like they were actually fighting each other.

Given the way wrestlers work today, Gilbertti isn’t even sure how writers are supposed to write good promos for them. Promos can only work if the in-ring action looks like a fight, and when wrestlers go in the ring and work choreographed flip-flop matches, it’s impossible to take any of their promos seriously.

Russo mentions that rumours are circulating regarding the status of Paige’s in-ring career. Apparently she has been forced to retire after taking a kick to the back area from Sasha Banks at a recent live event, and Russo thinks this entire thing could have been avoided.

He doesn’t want to criticize Sasha Banks too heavily because she probably already feels terrible about this situation. However, over the last couple years he’s seen Sting and now Paige forced into retirement due to reckless in-ring work that should have never happened.

Russo recalls watching Seth Rollins throwing Sting around like a rag doll during their match a couple of years ago. He’s sure Sting agreed to do whatever Rollins wanted during the match, but Rollins should have been smarter and protected Sting, given that Sting was in his mid-50s at the time.

Fast-forwarding to today, it was known that Paige has had issues with her neck and spine for the last little while. Instead of protecting her opponent as her job description outlines, Banks kicked Paige right in the back from behind. Russo points out that part of working in the wrestling business is protecting your opponent, and much like Rollins with Sting, Banks failed to protect Paige during this match.

Paige took to her Twitter account for the first time since of the news broke that she may be forced into early retirement after suffering an injury in a match against Sasha Banks three weeks ago. She simply posted a photo of herself, which doesn’t give much insight to her situation.

Paige was informed earlier this week by WWE that she will not be cleared to return to action following her recently injury.

PWInsider reports Paige was given the news this past Monday and multiple sources are saying that she is “done” as an in-ring competitor. It was first believed that Paige only suffered a stinger in her match two weeks ago against Sasha Banks but further tests have indicated that her condition is worse than expected. The decision was made not to clear her once they got the results of the tests back. Paige’s situation is very similar to what happened with Edge back in 2011, when he was forced into retirement.

Moving forward the company may assign her an on-air personality role, where she doesn’t have to get physical but still have a position in the company. This has been done with talents such as Daniel Bryan, who is the SmackDown GM and Corey Graves, who is an announcer for RAW and SmackDown.

As previously reported, 19 women on the main roster will be competing in the Women’s Royal Rumble match at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view event. Those names include Natalya, Naomi, Ruby Riott, Alicia Fox, Mandy Rose, Sonya Deville, Liv Morgan, Sarah Logan, Dana Brooke, Asuka, Sasha Banks, Bayley, Carmella, Tamina, Lana, Nia Jax, Becky Lynch, Mickie James and Paige.

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest issue of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that he’s been told that nine 9 women from the NXT brand are expected to make appearances in the match. That only leaves 2-3 surprise entrants in the match (3 if Paige doesn’t get cleared, 2 if she does). The belief is that the remaining spots could be The Bella Twins or Ronda Rousey. PWInsider reported earlier this week that those spots could also go to Michelle McCool and Molly Holly.

It looks like Paige may not be able to get cleared in time to compete in the first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble match this month.

As previously noted, Paige suffered an injury during a match against Sasha Banks two weeks ago, when she was kicked in the face. While there is still a chance she could be clear, her head injury is said to be worse than the original prognostics.

We will keep you updated if Paige’s status changes but right now it’s not looking good for the former champion.

It was reported last week that Paige was removed from WWE events after she suffered an injury after Sasha Banks kicked her in the face at the WWE Live Event in Long Island, NY.

In an update, PWInsider reports that Paige is backstage for tonight’s RAW event in Miami, Florida. The word going around backstage is that she has not been cleared to return to in-ring action. It’s very likely that she doesn’t appear on television tonight.

The Rock’s Seven Bucks Productions served as production company on the film, which stars Florence Pugh (Lady Macbeth) as Paige; Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) as Paige’s mother, Sweet Saraya; Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead)as Paige’s father, Vince Vaughn as Jake Roberts and Zelina Vega as AJ Lee. The Rock will also be making a cameo in the movie.

While the release date has not been announced yet, the plan is to do an advance screening at WrestleMania 34 week.
