Kenny Omega has some definite opinions about his upcoming rematch with Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Dominion on June 11th. Many, if not most, fans are chomping at the bit for the match, but Omega recently said that he felt that it may be a bit too soon, in his mind, for the epic rematch to take place.

“If I’m going to give you a personal opinion, I would say that, I personally think it’s too soon to revisit that match. I would have liked to just let that performance be, come back to it at a later date. But there comes a time in business when it’s just important to move numbers, put asses in seats, as the saying goes, and you have to come out guns blazing. “I knew eventually there would be a second match, regardless of how good or bad it was. I think there’s going to be a third, [and] I still think there’s going to be an Omega-Okada four. [But] I’ve been called to duty sooner than I would have liked to have been, and I’m put into a situation where that match is still very fresh in everyone’s minds.”

As for how he plans to handle the match, he has definite ideas about that, too.

“My goal with Okada is going to be very similar with how I dealt with the G1. I’m not necessarily going for ‘match of the night’, I’m going to try and tell a very different, unique story. In that, we’ll sort of lay the groundwork for not just the match, but for probably the next match, and the match after that.

“I’m not going to add some sort of crazy thing just to say that, ‘Hey, we did something crazy, we went longer.’ That doesn’t necessarily equal better. I’m lucky that my best strength as a wrestler has always been my brain. As naturally athletic as I’m gifted to be, where certain things came easily, I always rely on my brain first.”

If Kenny Omega has taught us anything over the past year, it’s that he is smart. A lot of fans feel that NJPW is rushing this rematch, but looking at it from a logical business standpoint, it is the right time, especially given their Western expansion plans and the upcoming G1 special shows in Los Angeles in July. Omega knows how to work a match, tell a story, and make everything, every movement, facial expression, and vocalization during a match, feel important and and make it something fans can get emotionally invested in.

His walking out of Okasa Jo Hall with the IWGP Heavyweight Championship on June 11th would be a great beginning to a new chapter in his Japanese wrestling career. What he’d do as the top dog in the promotion when they expand globally would be interesting to say the least.
