It’s official: Lucha Underground is returning for a fourth season. El Rey announced the return of the show moments ago on Twitter.

And, here’s the official press release on the return:

El Rey Network has green lit the fourth season of its hit lucha libre wrestling series Lucha Underground, it was announced today by El Rey Network President and G.M. Daniel Tibbets. Production will begin in Los Angeles in early 2018.

“Lucha Underground has been a remarkable series for El Rey Network. We have aired 105 episodes since its debut in 2014, hosted a live event at the SXSW film festival as well as in markets across the Southwest, and the series was the first TV show to screen theatrically using 4dx technology. Further, filming each episode in front of a live audience has given devoted fans the opportunity to engage and closley connect with the show,”, commented Tibbets. “I am as excited as ‘The Believers’ – Lucha Underground’s rabid fanbase – that the series is coming back for another action-packed season.”

There’s no word yet on how many episodes Season 4 will contain or when the show will restart. But, with production kicking off early next year, hopefully fans will get to see the return sometime in the Spring of 2018.

Photo: El Rey

What was once the hottest new promotion on the wrestling scene has been slowly fading into obscurity lately. Lucha Underground had two very strong seasons, but the current third season has seen all the hype and hubbub surrounding the promotion slowly but surely dissipate.

It’s being reported now, though, that there could be some good news for the El Rey show. There is a potential source of funding for a fourth season, but the budget for the show would have to be slashed to almost bare bones levels. So, while the future of the promotion still looks bleak, it’s not as bad as it was once made out to be.

It’s also being reported that most of the talent contracted to Lucha Underground want out, and one of the promotion’s biggest names, Prince Puma (Ricochet) is already finished with the company. But, even though his contract has expired, he’s said that he has a 90 day no-compete clause that kicks in only when the third season finishes airing on El Rey.

“My contract finished last June. I’m on the no-compete for the rest of Lucha Underground’s season three, then I have 90 days after that. I can be on any TV as long as it’s not American TV. I can work indies, I can do iPPVs, most anything, really, just not on American TV. I’m not sure about a Season 4 with Lucha Underground. I’m busy until October, and I might take November off to heal up again.”

So, with names like Ricochet no longer associated with the promotion, it will be interesting to see what, if any, direction the promotion would take for a fourth season.

Photo: El Rey Network

Taya Valkyrie joined Chris Jericho on Talk is Jericho this week, in an episode recorded before the incident between Rosemary and Sexy Star at TripleMania. In Wednesday’s interview, Taya talks Lucha Underground’s future and her social media feud with Vampiro in the wake of being stripped of the AAA Reina de Reinas title earlier this year. “If this is part of an angle, why isn’t anybody talking to me?”

Jericho and Taya also discussed her “missed connection” with WWE, revealing she was once brought to FCW for tryouts and was offered a contract that was later pulled without explanation. In the wake of WWE’s sudden change of heart, having already left jobs and apartments, Taya managed to get in contact with Konnan and made her way to Mexico to continue pursuing professional wrestling full time.

On her mentor, Perro Aguayo, Jr.: “Perro told me the day he met me, day two or three, ‘you’re not going back, you’re going to stay with me, you’re going to be the first female member of Los Perros del Mal.’ He saw something in me.”

The interview is full of great tidbits about Taya’s time in Mexico (including Alberto del Rio’s brother teaching her to use the subway in Mexico) and the differences in learning the luchador/luchadora style verses other traditional wrestling styles. Her candid discussion of the aftermath of being stripped of her title sheds some interesting new light on her absence from AAA, and she opens up about feeling “backstabbed” after the incident with her title. “There are ways of doing it, and I just feel like it wasn’t done in the right way.” She also admits she’s taking time off from working in Mexico and isn’t sure where she stands with AAA, but still has an active contract with them.

Taya also spoke incredibly highly of her experiences with the Lucha Underground team, discussing the distinction between traditional wrestling shows and LU as more of a television serial. “We’re artists! We get to be so creative on that set. … as far as the matches go, we’re allowed to do so much creatively. ‘Just tell us where you’re going to dive!’”

Unfortunately, there’s still no update on whether or not Lucha Underground will be returning for another season. According to Taya, “Everybody’s super hyped and wants to do season four. It hasn’t been greenlit yet. Original we were told ‘the fall’ … well, the fall is coming.”

As reported earlier today by Top Rope Press, Impact Knockout Rosemary was legitimately injured by Lucha Underground’s Sexy Star in a match at TripleMania XXV Saturday night. At the end of the match, Sexy Star put Rosemary into an armbar and refused to release the hold even after the match was called. There are no additional updates on the status of Rosemary’s injury, but she’s taken to Twitter to offer her side of the story.

In a series of screenshots on a tweet that simply states, “24 hours removed..,” Rosemary had this to say:

“Let me make this perfectly clear: if you take liberties with someone’s body when they are giving it to you and trusting you to keep them safe, you are not tough. You are an asshole. And you don’t belong in this business.”

At one point, Lucha Underground Co-Executive Producer Chris DeJoseph hinted on Twitter there was more than one side to the story. Though his account has since been protected, a search of his mentions turns up replies to the original tweet, including one fan hoping for a GFW-LU feud. With Johnny Mundo and Taya both debuting on Impact this month, the move would have made sense, but Rosemary’s statement seems to firmly squash the idea that the incident was anything but intentional and fully legitimate.

It’s always a shame when a wrestler is injured, but the idea that another wrestler would intentionally harm someone and put their career and income at risk, especially at a show with as many eyes on it as TripleMania, is deeply upsetting. There’s been no official response from Lucha Underground or El Rey Network, but with several of its current stars – including Taya Valkyrie – speaking out in Rosemary’s defense, it will be interesting to see if Sexy Star returns for its fourth season, and in what way she’s made to part ways with the Temple if she doesn’t.

PJ Black, formally Justin Gabriel of the WWE, was injured in a recent base jumping accident and could be out of action for up to 12 months. This is not the first time Black has been seriously injured base jumping.

The Lucha Underground star spoke about the accident with Interactive Wrestling Radio and talked about how jumping off the 320 foot tall building went horribly wrong.

“The short version is, I jumped. My body position wasn’t perfect. The parachute opened with a 180-degree turn, so instead of flying away from the building, I flew straight into the building. I managed to kick off one of the ledges and flip myself around, but in doing that I broke my ankle, and then while I was flipping around my finger got caught in a satellite dish. It ripped the tip of the finger off. I’ve got two titanium plates in my leg, and a pretty messed up finger, but I’m alive so that’s pretty cool.”

The 36 year old South African star continued:

“The South African doctors told me three to four weeks, non-weight-bearing. So I’m still on crutches and I can start walking pretty soon, obviously with a moon boot on. But the American doctors found some extra arthritis and dead bone in my joints. So they recommend crutches for about three months. So anything between six months and twelve months, depending on how quickly I recover. I guess the arthritis and the dead bone is from my 20 years of wrestling.”

More details on the accident are on the video below.

We at Top Rope Press wish PJ Black a speedy recovery and can’t wait to see him in a ring again soon.
