Ross was very sad to hear about Paige’s injury situation this week. He points out that Paige needs to find a way to move to “Plan B” now, and he thinks she has loads of potential as an entertainer in a variety of fields. Ross thinks Paige could have a lot of success continuing as an on-air personality for WWE, or she could move into television and film because she has a great look.

Ross fantasy books Ronda Rousey debuting in WWE during the Royal Rumble match, which would lead to her challenging Charlotte for the Smackdown Women’s Title at WrestleMania. He says under the right circumstances with the right build, he’d have no issue with Charlotte and Rousey headlining WrestleMania. He also shoots down the theory that other women on WWE’s roster might resent Rousey, pointing out that Rousey sells tickets and draws viewership, which means more money for everyone involved.

He says he’s quite excited about travelling to Brooklyn for the 25th anniversary of RAW next Monday night. It was reported that he will be reuniting with Jerry “The King” Lawler for this show, and while nothing has been confirmed to him yet, he has a feeling that he and Lawler will be calling the action at The Manhattan Center.

Today’s episode of Dinner With the King was recorded live at Lawler’s BBQ restaurant, featuring Lawler’s co-host Glenn Moore and a group of fans.

The show opens with Moore asking Lawler about his history with Ric Flair. Lawler informs that he didn’t work a lot of matches with Flair because Flair was always a travelling Champion, and Lawler was based in Memphis because he owned the promotion there. The only times he worked with Flair was when Flair came through his promotion.

Lawler points out that Ric Flair didn’t have a gimmick. What you see is what you get with Flair, 365 days of the year. Moore asks Lawler if Flair was hard to work with back in those days, but Lawler can’t recall him being stubborn or hard to deal with. He informs that they rarely interacted with each other prior to their matches. They’d work their matches on the fly in the ring, and as soon as the match was over Flair would leave the building.

Lawler recalls a huge compliment Flair gave him years ago. It occurred in their hotel room after the infamous “Plane Ride From Hell”, as all the wrestlers and flight attendants were continuing their drinking there. One of the flight attendants were sitting on Lawler’s lap as Flair passed by him and saw. Flair turned around and said, “When it comes to women, King is my hero!” That was big praise coming from the man who apparently slept with 10,000 women.

Lawler is joined on this week’s show by his co-host Glenn Moore.

Lawler informs that it’s 99.9% certain that he and Jim Ross will be reunited at the commentary booth for the 25th Anniversary edition of Monday Night RAW on January 22nd. He points out that part of the show will broadcast from the original home of RAW, The Manhattan Centre, so he assumes that he and Ross will be calling that part of the show.

He points out that he has so many great memories of working in The Manhattan Centre, including his interactions with Stu and Helen Hart as well as the initial ECW invasion. He’s very excited about the thought of reuniting with Ross, and he hints that he might wear his old King outfit, the jacket and crown that he wore during the initial years of RAW.

Moore mentions that he was at Monday Night RAW this past week where he was able to see one of his all-time favourite performers, Kane. Lawler points out that Kane is in the middle of a push right now, working a main event angle on RAW, and this will probably be his last big run before moving into his career in politics full time.

Lawler thinks Kane will make a great Mayor in Knoxville, and he recalls the time when he ran for Mayor in Memphis. He says that not winning that mayoral race was the best thing that never happened to him, because he’s sure that would have impacted his career greatly, and he loves the career that he went on to have after losing that race.

Moore opens today’s show by mentioning that HBO is preparing to release an Andre the Giant documentary. Lawler knew that already because HBO actually came to his house and his bar in Memphis and he filmed a bunch of material that might be used on that documentary. Just from talking to the filmmakers, Lawler is sure that this is going to be a very good film and he’s really looking forward to watching it.

Moore mentions that Lawler was never a big partier, and he’d often drive home alone late at night after his matches were completed. Lawler confirms that, and says he’d always listen to the Cleveland Indians game on the radio on his drives home and he actually credits that with keeping him alive over the years. Some of those late night trips were over 200 miles, and he mentions that he probably would have fallen asleep on multiple occasions if it weren’t for the company of the Indians game.

Lawler says he was shocked to hear that Jim Johnston was released by WWE this past week. He says that Johnston has been invaluable to WWE over the years and has composed the themes of Superstars such as The Undertaker, Kane, Mankind and plenty more. Lawler thinks WWE is going to miss Johnston and agrees with Moore that Johnson deserves to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

He adds that if WWE inducts Johnston into the Hall of Fame they should think about inducting Jimmy Hart as well because when WWE started using music, Hart actually came up with most of the original themes including Shawn Michaels’ theme.

Ross opens today’s show speaking about the recent WWE releases. He says that Emma is a fundamentally sound performer and whatever problems she may have, she’s still young enough to fix them and make her way back to WWE if that’s what she wants to do. The same can be said for both Summer Rae and Darren Young.

He feels bad for those three individuals but this type of thing happens to all of us, and he hopes they all put their work boots on and get back into the game instead of hanging their heads and complaining on social media.

Ross says he was able to watch an early screening of Ric Flair’s upcoming 30 for 30 documentary and it really had an impact on him. It was an emotional journey and some of the stories told on the documentary upset him, partially because he was a part of some of them and he’s not proud of that. Nonetheless, Flair’s recent health issues have made him take better care of himself and he’s thankful for that.

Ross says he was excited to hear about WWE’s plans for the 25th anniversary of RAW. He hopes to receive a call and he mentions that it’d be great to potentially work with Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler again. In either event, he’d love to just travel to New York and spend some time with a lot of his old friends because he cherishes those moments now, perhaps more than ever.

He says he really enjoyed the recent Twitter war between Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho. Ross thinks there’s a method behind this madness and he assumes we’ll eventually see a match between these two men. He says that Jericho versus Omega at WrestleKingdom in the Tokyo Dome would be a massive event.

Lawler mentions that the current Meningitis outbreak in WWE is very unfortunate. He assumes that someone picked up a bug during one of the recent overseas tours and now it has spread through the locker room. He mentions that none of the commentators have come down with the illness as of yet which is great, but Lawler was still wondering if he’d get a call at the last minute to commentate on the TLC PPV or to work the kickoff show.

Speaking of Kurt Angle’s return to a WWE ring, Lawler thought Angle did a terrific job and commends him on jumping into that spot at the last minute in order to give the WWE Universe something special. Lawler recalls driving from an indie show with Angle roughly a year ago and Angle was expressing his desire to return to a WWE ring even then, so it was great to see him live out that dream Sunday night.

Lawler mentions that some people may have been critical of that main event and all the gimmicks and antics that it included, but he points out that WWE’s goal is always to send the fans home happy. After having to adjust the two big matches on the TLC card, WWE found a way to deliver and send their fans home happy.

Moore informs that Jim Cornette will be the guest on next week’s show, and Lawler points out that Cornette appears to be the talk of the wrestling business again after getting into a verbal altercation with former WWE Superstar Santino last weekend.

Moore adds that Cornette apparently revealed himself to the studio audience at Bruce Prichard’s live show and Lawler has a hard time believing that. He says that until Cornette comes out and admits to doing that he’s going to give him the benefit of the doubt. Lawler jokes that Cornette has two languages: english and profanity.

Moore is upset at the fact that Lawler is not a playable character in the WWE 2K18 video game. Moore points out that Lawler has the most Championship wins in wrestling history and he should be in this game. Lawler says he hasn’t be contacted about having a character in the game and he thinks that could be due to the fact that WWE thinks of him solely as a colour commentator now.

Lawler is joined on today’s show by his co-host Glenn Moore. On this episode Lawler will pay tribute to his long-time friend, Lance Russell.

Russell passed away this week days after taking a fall at his son’s home. Russell was in a lot of pain and had to be heavily sedated. Lawler informs that Russell failed to ever truly emerge from his heavily-sedated state. In some ways Lawler feels that this may have been God’s way of sparing Russell the suffering of having to go through his daughter’s death, because his daughter had been battling cancer for a long time and passed away the exact same day that Russell was hospitalized.

Lawler informs that if it wasn’t for Lance Russell, there would have never been a ‘King Jerry Lawler’. Lawler was a tremendous artist growing up and had actually been offered a scholarship to attend art school. He had dreams of becoming a professional artist, and wanted to work for either DC or Marvel comics as a comic artist.

Lawler had always been a big professional wrestling fan and always watched Memphis Wrestling, hosted by Lance Russell. He recalls being asked to draw some of the professional wrestlers for the promotion’s use, and he’ll never forget the day that Lance Russell held up several pieces of his artwork live on the air. From there Russell led the charge in getting Lawler an opportunity to start learning the in-ring side of the business.

Lawler opens today’s show speaking about the passing of Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan. Lawler was devastated to hear the news of Heenan’s passing over the weekend, and he says there’ll never be anyone like Heenan ever again. He considers the pairing of Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon to be the greatest commentary team of all time.

He mentions that Heenan was the one who personally introduced him to the WWE Universe, and he knew he was in for a good run when Heenan was chosen as the choice to introduce him. Lawler says it’s terrible that Heenan had so many health issues over the last decade, and it was particularly cruel that he was stricken with throat cancer given that he spent so many years entertaining people with his voice.

Moore points out that WWE announced they’ll be promoting a show under the Starrcade banner soon, and Lawler says he actually doesn’t remember anything about Starrcade. He never saw any of those shows from back in the day because he and all the other WWE employees were so involved in their own thing during the Monday Night Wars that they didn’t have time to watch what WCW was doing.

Moore asks Lawler if McMahon is hesitant to use former WCW PPV names, since we haven’t really seen much of it at all since WWE bought WCW back in 2002. Lawler doesn’t think McMahon is hesitant to use those names at all, and when the time is right, he has proven that he doesn’t mind bringing back old WCW PPVs.

Lawler says his residence in Florida was lucky enough to escape the wrath of Hurricane Irma. He couldn’t believe the strength of this storm, and there were a lot of people who didn’t get quite as lucky as he did.

A listener writes into the show and asks Lawler if WWE-contracted Superstars are able to wrestle at indie events. Lawler says performers signed to contracts in WWE aren’t able to wrestle at indie events, but there are some cases where third party bookings occur when an indie promotion pays WWE’s fee to utilize a certain Superstar.

On the five year anniversary of Lawler’s cardiac arrest, Lawler and Moore discuss the events of that evening.

Moore points out that there are actually some conspiracists out there who don’t believe Lawler suffered a cardiac arrest that evening. They believe that it was all a part of a WWE storyline and that it was all a staged event. Lawler says that he can’t remember anything about it and he hasn’t had any lasting side effects from it, so sometimes he thinks it was all a hoax as well.
