As seen on Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown Live, Daniel Bryan announced that AJ Styles will defend his WWE Championship Title against Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn in a 2-on-1 Hadicap match at the upcoming Royal Rumble pay-per-view this month.

Owens took to his Twitter account after last night’s SmackDown main event and reacted to the announcement. He wrote, “I like how checking on a referee’s well-being is enough of a reason for @shanemcmahon to put his hands on his top superstar. Thankfully, @WWEDanielBryan is a normal person who understands that such kindness and talent should be rewarded. #ThankYouDaniel #NextWWEChampion#YEP”

Daniel Bryan announced in the closing segment of tonight’s episode of SmackDown Live that AJ Styles will defend his WWE Championship Title against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn in a handicap match at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view event.

* WWE Championship Match: Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn vs. AJ Styles (Handicap match)

Taz delivers a special New Years Day edition of The Taz Show, in which he’ll break down his list of the Top 5 Wrestlers of 2017.

Before that, he points out that there have been a lot of changes happening behind the scenes of The Taz Show lately, but he’s happy to announce that The Taz Show will continue in 2018 with shows on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. He will get back into the swing of things with this new schedule beginning next week.

Top presents his top 5 wrestlers of 2017.

5. Kevin Owens

Taz thinks Owens should be on everyone’s top 5 list for 2017, because he had a great year in WWE. He points out that Owens appears to have great chemistry with everyone he works with in the ring, and his promo work has been on point all year as well.

Owens is one of the top heels in WWE, and he also sells great which is very important as a heel. Taz points out that Owens isn’t a small man, so that makes his ability to work and bump even more impressive. His feuds this year with A.J. Styles and Shane McMahon were very entertaining, and both feuds delivered in the ring.

Taz recalls working for TNA a few years ago and he was heavily recruiting Owens to work for TNA during that time. He’s been a fan of Owens for as long as he can remember, and he wishes he had the opportunity to work with Owens because he thinks they could have done tremendous business together in the ring and on the mic.

While appearing on MLive, Kevin Owens talked about the reaction he receives from the crowd and mentioned that someday he hopes to have the same kind of response that John Cena and Roman Reigns receives.

“I just try to listen to strong reaction. To me the best reaction is a mix of both boos and cheers. John Cena and Roman Reigns get insane reactions where half the crowd loves them and half the crowd despises them. When you’re in the ring waiting for your opponent, whether it’s John or Roman, you get hit by this crazy noise. It’s people almost competing with each other. The guy who’s booing one of them is trying to be louder than the guy cheering. It makes for a special atmosphere. That’s really what I’m striving for.”

Taz opens today’s show speaking about the recent angle between Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega in NJPW. He loved what those two guys did here, and Jericho’s surprise appearance in Japan really shocked the live crowd. However, he didn’t like how Kevin Kelly and the commentary team handled this. Jericho was back on to the camera so the viewers at home couldn’t tell who it was initially, yet the announcers began screaming “Oh my God, it’s Jericho!”

Taz says that commentators need to use their monitors because that’s what the viewers at home are seeing. He recalls McMahon telling him and Michael Cole in their ear pieces to look right into their monitors because a surprise was coming and he wanted the announcers to react to what the viewers were seeing at home.

He points out that NJPW is usually great at keeping secrets, but he can tell by the way that they called the action that the commentary team knew Jericho was going to make an appearance. If Taz was running NJPW he would have kept this from the commentators so they would have reacted organically like a fan.

He credits Jericho for his great beatdown of Omega, and he adds that Omega sold all of Jericho’s offence  wonderfully. The entire thing felt old school and Taz calls it ‘badass’. Jericho is the perfect guy to pull this off in Taz’s opinion because he has the experience and knowledge, and he knows exactly the kind of heat that was needed to make this angle work.

WWE has announced Kevin Owens vs. Nakamura for next week’s episode of SmackDown Live. In addition to the match, the company has also Jinder Mahal and AJ Styles will face off in a segment. Here is an excerpt of their announcement:

“Shinsuke Nakamura clashes with Kevin Owens this Tuesday on SmackDown LIVE
The fate of Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn will be decided during a tag team battle against Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura at WWE Clash of Champions, as the troublesome duo’s careers in all of WWE will be on the line. But before the huge showdown in Boston, KO will have to step inside the squared circle with The King of Strong Style on this Tuesday’s edition of SmackDown LIVE, with Zayn and Orton in their partner’s respective corners.

After Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan forced Owens to be handcuffed to the ring rope to prevent him from interfering in Orton and Zayn’s match this past Tuesday, KO used bolt cutters to escape and subsequently unleash a vicious attack on The Viper, with a little help from his best friend. It was reported last month that both Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens had backstage heat on them after they were kicked off the European tour for going into business for themselves in a segment with The New Day on SmackDown Live.

Dave Meltzer indicated in the latest installment of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Kevin Owens doesn’t have any heat on him anymore but Sami is a different story.

“It appears that all the controversy regarding Owens from when he and Zayn were sent home is gone, but the same isn’t the case of Zayn,” Meltzer wrote. Meltzer didn’t elaborate any further on the topic.

On today’s show former ECW, WCW and WWE Superstar, Big Vito and Jeff Lane will discuss Survivor Series.

Vito points out that WWE brought Kalisto into 205 Live to get good, entertaining matches out of Enzo Amore. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened and the experiment has failed big time. He says that Kalisto has definitely taken himself out the Title picture for an extended period of time.

He says that Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn definitely did something to piss people off because they went from the main event picture to being placed into the ‘Ha Ha spot’ with Breezango at Survivor Series. He thought this was a terrible match, and these two kickoff show matches really started the show on a poor note.

Lane points out that NXT: War Games didn’t sell out, and the crowd arrived late for Survivor Series. He wonders if four nights of wrestling in a row is becoming too much for fans. Vito says that NXT lost a lot of big stars recently before they had the proper people ready to replace them. He suggests that maybe WWE should consider rotating a few talents back and forth from NXT and the main roster.

Vito thought Survivor Series’ 5-man booth had way too many voices. He also thought that Shawn Michaels had a poor showing on the kickoff panel. He says that he has no heat with Michaels but he made no sense whatsoever on that panel, and the other panel members had to bail him out on several occasions. He points out that when you’re not cutting promos on a consistent basis there’s going to be some rust.

WWE teased that Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn could be headed to RAW in a video they posted on social media during Sunday’s WWE Survivor Series event.

PWInsider reports that there was talk of doing a Superstar Shake up in the fall earlier this year, but it’s uknown of this plans still stand. There was also talk during the summer within the company of putting Owens back on the RAW brand but it quieted pretty quickly. It will be interesting to see in the coming weeks where they go with this storyline.
