Edge and Christian open today’s show speaking about the WrestleKingdom match between Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega. They both thought it was a great match, and while they would have loved to see a traditional match between between these two men, they understand why it was necessary to go straight to a “No DQ” gimmick match.

Edge believes this was a one-off match, so they couldn’t build to a “No DQ” rematch. This stipulation also protected Jericho who has had quite a lot of time off recently. It’s amazing what Jericho can still do at 47-years old but his age is still a factor, so although Jericho is smart enough to put together a fantastic traditional match, this stipulation allowed them to pull out all the bells and whistles.

Edge and Christian welcome Beth Phoenix to the show.

Phoenix mentions that she just got home from meetings for the upcoming Mixed Match Challenge. She will be a part of the commentary team alongside Michael Cole and Corey Graves, and she points out that she’s very excited to learn this side of the business. After years away from the business she had forgotten how hard the travel is, and she admits that she’s exhausted right now.

Jazzy Gabert, who appeared in the Mae Young Classic tournament back in July, revealed during an appearance on the Edge & Christian podcast that she was in the processes of signing with WWE. Unfortunately Dr. Maroon found an issue with her neck. She apparently has three herniated discs in her neck and due to that, WWE rescinded the offer.

She will be getting surgery to fix the issue this spring.

Edge and Christian open today’s show speaking about the announcement of the inaugural Women’s Royal Rumble match. Christian thinks that this is another great step in the right direction for women’s professional wrestling, and Edge completely agrees. Edge thinks that it’s only a matter of time before the Women main event WrestleMania, and that historic match might even piggyback off of this Rumble match.

Edge welcomes his wife, Beth Phoenix to the show to discuss this huge announcement. Phoenix says that hearing this announcement was one of the proudest moments in her professional life. During her time in WWE, all the women felt like they could sell tickets like the men but they weren’t presented in a situation to do so. She’s happy for this generation of women’s wrestlers who finally have that opportunity.

Phoenix informs that her phone has been blowing up since this announcement with questions regarding her potential return for this Rumble. She mentions that it’s a great feeling to receive those messages and questions, and this just proves that there’s a bunch of buzz surrounding this match.

Edge & Christian open today’s show speaking about last Sunday’s TLC PPV.

Christian thought it was good that there was only one TLC match on the show, because if you have three or four of those matches on the same show the fans grow weary of it by the end of the night. Christian thought the show was pretty good but it didn’t ‘blow his socks off’.

Edge says that he just doesn’t get the fascination surrounding Asuka, but he thought Emma had a great showing on this night. Christian points out that when there’s that much hype surrounding a performer it becomes nearly impossible for the performer to live up to people’s expectations. Nonetheless, he thought Asuka’s presentation and facial expressions were good.

Edge couldn’t comprehend how Asuka, Emma and that match’s Producer thought it was good idea to utilize an ankle lock in that match when Hall of Famer, Kurt Angle was making his long-awaited return to the ring in the main event later in the show. This is a sign to Edge that someone just doesn’t have a mind for the business.

Christian says he really enjoyed the Elias segments. Edge agrees and points out that Elias is a throwback to Honky Tonk Man and Jeff Jarrett in his ability to get heat through his music gimmick. Edge and Christian both agree that Alexa Bliss and Mickie James had a good match, and they add that Mickie James is a great babyface while Bliss is a really good heel.

Edge and Christian open this week’s show speaking about Sami Zayn’s recent heel turn. Christian says that Zayn has cut a great heel promo on Smackdown Live two weeks in a row and he believes this turn has added some great layers to Zayn’s character.

Edge and Christian welcome Goldust to the show.

Goldust comments on the notion that it may have been his work in the mid-late 90’s that started the attitude era. He says that he likes to think that’s the case from time to time, but most people tend to agree that it was DX, NWO, Rock, Austin and all the other stars during that era that truly ushered in that cutting edge style.

He’s still very proud of what he accomplished with the Goldust character at that time, and he thinks a lot of the work he was doing back then was well before its time. He admits that when he transitioned from WCW to WWE in the mid 90’s he was determined to make his own success, separate from the ‘Rhodes’ name. He was handed the Goldust character and it took him a while to feel comfortable with it.

Edge & Christian open today’s show speaking about last Sunday’s Hell in A Cell PPV.

They both agree that the opening bout between The Usos and The New Day was a terrific match and they credit the originality of a lot of the spots in this match. Edge points out that it felt as if The New Day were trapped in the Usos’ penitentiary at times, and it was also great to see Big E go into ‘Terminator’ mode in this match.

Christian thought the WWE Title match between Jinder Mahal and Nakamura was put in a tough spot, but he also points out that a World Title match should be able to live up to expectations whenever it’s placed on a card. Edge points out that Nakamura hasn’t really shown up yet on the main roster and he’s not sure why. He also points out that Jinder Mahal needs to be able to get to another gear during big PPV matches and he hasn’t shown the ability to do that yet.

Edge & Christian both agree that the main event between Kevin Owens and Shane McMahon delivered as suspected, helped a lot by a fantastic build during this entire storyline. Edge does point out that whenever Shane McMahon is in a match like this people know he’s going to jump off of something, so they’re often sitting on their hands waiting for it to happen. Nonetheless, in this case he thought the fans were with the match throughout.

Sean “X-Pac” Waltman recently spoke with The Sheet Podcast about Degeneration X and mentioned that he doesn’t believe there should be an attempt at a reboot. Here are a couple of highlights from the interview:

20th anniversary of DX: “Until I woke up today I didn’t even know that it was the 20-year anniversary. I look back at it and there are some things now that I’m like, ‘Eh, that wouldn’t work nowadays.’ But I’m really grateful. I know I’m kind of at a loss for words right now, but I’m really grateful for that experience. People live their dreams or whatever, but that’s really living your dream. Riding that high in the industry and pop culture in general, you couldn’t go anywhere. Anyways, very grateful man. And I look back at it with incredibly fond memories. I’m not one of those guys that goes, ‘Gee, I sure wish we could go back to the way it used to be.’ I’m not one of those guys, but man I look back at those memories with a lot of fondness.”

Favorite thing he did as part of the stable: “This might kind of sound silly, and it might’ve seemed silly at the time to a lot of people that watched it, but when we got to go onstage and do ‘Wildside’ with Mötley Crüe during an episode of Raw.”

What happened after that episode: “Nothing, because those guys were all sober at the time. And really, I was too other than the pot. But I was joking around about pot with them and they weren’t even having that at the time.”

Reboot of DX: “Man, that might be the kiss of death to whoever they tried to do that. I don’t know man. It’s one of those questions where … it’s like when somebody goes, ‘Hey, who would you like to wrestle if you had to choose?’ Man in my mind, how it works, all of sudden my gears start spinning and it takes forever for me to come up with an answer. I want to see what people have. There’s so much talent, not just in-ring talent but cerebral talent, intellectual talent. I want to see what they can create, some new stuff they can create. I think there’s going to be some really really cool stuff over the next few years. I really do. I’m hoping man.”

Why the 2006 version wasn’t as popular: “I don’t know. I just don’t think business was the same. It was bound not to. For how business was at the time I think it was successful in its own way. They weren’t doing as edgy of stuff. But I think it worked. I think it might’ve attracted a new age group of DX fans that weren’t exposed to it before. Or I could just say because I wasn’t in it.”

The crotch chop and ‘Suck It’: “Yeah I’m very proud of that. I used to drop my kids off at a Christian school when they were in elementary school and you should’ve seen the stink eye I would get from all the parents and the teachers.”

We noted last week that WWE could possibly be making more cuts to the current product. The company has already decided to discontinue the usage of pyros at WWE events and they also cancelled Talking Smack, The Edge & Christian Show, R-Truth’s Game Show plans & Renee Young’s Unfiltered show on the WWE Network.

Dave Meltzer discussed these cuts on today’s installment of Wrestling Observer Radio and revealed exactly why they are making these cuts. Apparently the company promised more profits last year and came short of what they had in mind and attributed it to the company’s spending. WWE decided that they would spend less this year so they pulled pyros and canceled shows on the WWE Network.

Another reason they’re making cuts has to do with the number of fans NOT subscribing to the WWE Network. They were hoping for more network subscribers this year but fell short of what they had in mind. It’s also being said that the growth after WrestleMania was less than expected.

WWE is hopeful with the cuts of Network shows that people don’t really watch and the cuts of non-revenue generated expenses, will help increase the bottom line profits.

Mr. Brock “The ‘Conqueror’ Beast” Lesnar will finally defend his Universal Championship at the aptly named Great Balls of Fire. His opponent is none other than Mr. Samoa “Samoan Submission ‘Destroyer’ Specialist” Joe. This has all the potential in the world to be a great match if WWE actually decides to book a proper match. It should be a hard-fought battle, but many feel that he is a placeholder contender until the proper Samoan can win the title. We still don’t know what WWE’s plans are, but hopefully, they crown the Destroyer in July. The Samoan Submission Specialist would be a great Universal Champion, and here’s why.

He’d Actually Be There Most of the Time

We can’t really fault Lesnar for wanting to work 10 times a year and get paid millions for it. He took Mr. Perfect’s advice to refrain from making wrestling his whole life. Good for him. I can respect that.

However, when Lesnar has the championship and disappears for months on end to go kill a wolf with his bare hands, it can leave Raw feeling a bit barren. Obviously, when he does show up, it’s a big deal, which adds to his star power (and to an extent, the star power of the belt).

If Samoa Joe had the title, we’d be seeing it a bit more often, what with the fact that Joe is actually a full-time Superstar. There are two groups of people when it comes to top championships. Some people prefer frequent defenses, while others want to save those for big occasions. Both are right, but there’s a fine line in between them. It’s been 69 days since the title was defended, and it hasn’t been successfully defended at all in almost 100 days. That’s kind of bad.

With the Destroyer holding the championship, we’d see it defended a bit more frequently, which could help boost the stock of the belt.

He Could Have Great Matches With the Rest of the Roster

Brock is an incredible wrestler, there’s no doubt about that. So is Joe. The problem is that ever since Lesnar defeated John Cena at Summerslam, his matches have since devolved into suplex spam. It’s like when you first learn to play Mortal Kombat and all you do is press one button and try to win. The difference is, Brock Lesnar actually wins. So there’s that.

Joe’ first/last feud with Seth Rollins sucked a whole lot, but that was because of the story. The matches were fine. There was just no real reason for the Destroyer to fight the Kingslayer other than “hurr durr Stephanie fell through a table, I’m gonna kick your ass”. Rollins defeated Triple H; that should have been the end of his story with Joe.

If the Samoan Submission Specialist got his hands on the Universal Championship, then he could put on great matches with the other big names on Raw. I wouldn’t mind seeing Rollins v. Joe again. I wouldn’t even mind seeing Balor v. Joe again. Heck, let’s put the two Samoans in one match and have them beat the hell out of each other for the Universal Championship.

It Will Boost the Championship’s Image

We are all aware of the Universal Championship’s lineage. Finn Balor was the inaugural champion and vacated the title the very next day. Kevin Owens held the title after and sucked more than a black hole during his reign. Goldberg won the belt in 30 seconds and dropped it in 28 days, and now Lesnar has the title. How many truly great Universal Championship matches can you count? Maybe 4 or 5. How many truly great WWE Championship matches can you count? Way more. Heck, even the World Heavyweight Championship (RIP) had more great matches. Randy Orton v. Christian at Over the Limit, Randy Orton v. Christian at Capitol Punishment, Randy Orton v. Christian at Money in the Bank, Randy Orton v. Christian at Summerslam, etc.

The Universal Championship hasn’t even been around for a year, so obviously, there have been less memorable matches. With Samoa Joe as champion, those matches can start happening. The Destroyer locking horns with the Demon, the Big Dog, or even the Eater of Worlds over the Universal Championship would be a sight to see.

Of course, none of this will come to pass because Lesnar is keeping the belt warm for the Big Dog. Beleedat.
