It was recently revealed that 13-time champion Randy Orton would be working a lighter schedule next year. According to various podcasts, interviews, and other sources, this was something Orton had been wanting for a long time. He’s done it all in WWE, so it’s not a bad idea to let him rest.

This is obviously a big decision, and there will be many consequences, good and bad. What are the pros and cons of Randy Orton’s altered schedule?

Pro: A Motivated Randy Orton

Remember last year when Randy Orton returned at Battleground? He was so happy back then. You could tell he was excited to be back. He was so enthusiastic and energetic. Fast forward to a year later, and people think Randy’s just going through the motions. He’s known to do that. It’s a known fact that when Orton doesn’t care, everyone will know.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. After disappearing every now and again, The Viper will miss wrestling. He’ll be excited to be in the ring. And we will be excited to see him.

Many people have been calling Orton “boring”, and while it’s not an unfounded complaint, it is unfortunate. The Apex Preadator is one of the best wrestlers on the roster. He’s just so naturally talented. By allowing himself to refresh, when Orton comes back, he can put in effort instead of coasting on his natural ability.

While speaking with News 18, Triple H provided an update on The Great Khali’s status with WWE and indicated that he could be used again in the future.

“Great Khali is a legend in the industry and he is always welcome to the WWE and we look forward to appearances by him in the future if that is something he wants to do. I know right now he is here in India and he is enjoying and kind of helping to train the next generation of superstars as well and being very successful at that. But you know, Great Khali is always going to be a legendary figure to the WWE and that means he is welcome at any time he wants to.”

Great Khali has been off WWE television since his interference in the WWE Championship match between Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal at WWE Battleground back on July 23rd. His appearance was originally planned for a one-and-done.

Hell in a Cell has been around for 20 years now. Between 1997 and today, nearly 40 matches have been contested inside Satan’s Structure. While the stipulation has produced many classics (who can forget Undertaker v. the Big Boss Man?), there have been a fair share of stinkers as well.

Obviously the older Cell matches are better (blood and brutality really add to the match), but there have also been some real classics in recent history. Since 2010, nearly 20 matches took place inside the Devil’s Playground. Which of these newer matches is the best? I’ll try my best to rank them.

4. Daniel Bryan v. Randy Orton (Hell in a Cell, 2013)

This was the sort-of culmination of the feud between Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton. After Bryan won the title at Summerslam, Orton cashed in his Money in the Bank contract, and the rest is history. Bryan won the title back at Night of Champions, but then he was stripped of it after a supposed fast count. After a draw at Battleground, the duo were set to settle their differences inside Hell in a Cell.

They went to war inside the structure. There were chairs involved. Lots of chairs. Also Shawn Michaels was there, for some reason. While Orton and Bryan failed to truly set the world on fire in previous bouts, they delivered here. There was lots of violence and barbarism on display here.

Shawn Michaels eventually kicked Bryan’s head off, which allowed Orton to pick up the win. Many believed this was the end of Bryan’s story, but he would get his win back at Wrestlemania the following year.

Welcome to SmackDown Live, only 48 hours removed from the Battleground PPV!

Jinder Mahal retained the WWE Championship against Randy Orton in the Punjabi Prison match. However, to nobody’s surprise, Orton wasn’t beaten one-on-one. In fact, it took FOUR guys for Mahal to retain, including himself, The Singh Brothers, and the return of The Great Khali. Look, I don’t like the fact that Mahal is being booked so weak, nor does the return of Khali excite me, but I do like the concept of Mahal having an impressive entourage. It definitely was a blemish on a match that was only starting to get good. However, it’s likely we’ll get the rubber match between the two at SummerSlam and so the feud will continue tonight. The match was fantastic and it felt like the right time to put the titles on The New Day. It’s unclear if we’re going to get a third showdown between the two teams at SummerSlam, but seeing as SmackDown’s tag division is pretty lacking, it seems likely. I’m fine with another month of these two teams going at it but in the meantime WWE really has to build a credible contender to New Day. Speaking of other teams, The Fashion Police were once again attacked on Sunday night and we’re no closer to figuring out who perpetrated the attacks. Rumour has it that Luke Harper and Erick Rowan are behind it, and I really hope that’s the case because they could be credible contender’s to the New Day should they beat The Fashion Police.

Natalya won the Five-Way Elimination Match at WWE Battleground on Sunday night, which means she will face Naomi at SummerSlam for the Women’s Championship.
The current WWE Battleground betting odds are showing rather even odds for tomorrow’s SmackDown Live PPV. As expected, John Cena is the heavy favorite to come out on top of the Flag Match. But, every other match on the card seems to be pretty much even. Jinder Mahal is a slight favorite in the WWE World Title match, AJ Styles has a slight lead in the US Title match, and Shinsuke Nakamura enjoys a small edge in his match against Baron Corbin. In the Women’s Fatal Five Way, there are no favorites, but the odds makers have Nattie as the definite loser.

With these odds, it will be interesting to see how tomorrow’s show pans out, because as of right now, there are really no clear favorites (except for Cena, of course).

Just a reminder, the minus indicates the favorite and the plus is for the underdog. The number after the plus or minus tells us how favored or unfavored the competitors are.

WWE Battleground Betting Odds

WWE Championship Punjabi Prison Match
Jinder Mahal -333 vs Randy Orton +220.

WWE United States Title
AJ Styles -300 vs Kevin Owens +188.

SmackDown Tag Team Championship
The Usos +163 vs The New Day -227.

Flag Match
John Cena -1000 vs Rusev +500.

Fatal 5 Way for the SmackDown Women’s Championship #1 Contendership
Charlotte +120 vs Lana +200 vs Becky Lynch +230 vs Tamina +350 vs Natalya +1000.

Shinsuke Nakamura -250 vs Baron Corbin +175.

Aiden English +150 vs Tye Dillenger -200.

Battleground is nearly upon us. After Sunday, plans will be set into motion. Summerslam depends entirely on what happens at Battleground. Will Baron Corbin be the next to fall to Shinsuke Nakamura? Will the New Day finally become Tag Team Champions? Who will be Naomi’s opponent at Summerslam?

With that in mind, who needs to win this Sunday? Which victories would be ideal? Who will affect Summerslam in the best possible way? We’re going to find out.

Rusev v. John Cena

First off, allow me to say this. This feud is so backwards and unnecessary that it’s almost funny. Do Smackdown really want two of their top stars to fight some anti-American foreigners? Apparently so.

Rusev is capable of so much more than just “I hate America, you fatties.” Cena can cut better promos when he’s not talking about “the flag represents all of us!” I don’t care that they’re fighting again. It’s just that the feud is straight out of the ’80s. All it needs are some prayers and vitamins and the Hulkster could do it. Not good.

I firmly believe that if anyone is to walk away from this victorious, it should be Rusev. Cena’s established; feeding everyone to someone for 10 years straight will do that. Cena can lose. Rusev’s coming back from an injury.

It’s not even a standard match; Cena doesn’t need to eat a pin. Have Rusev back over him with a truck or handcuff him to the ropes or something. Just let Rusev win. If Rusev loses, where does he go from there? Nowhere. A victory will give him a little nudge up the card.

Kevin Owens v. AJ Styles

At Battleground, AJ Styles and Kevin Owens will once again lock horns over the United States Championship. Owens lost the title at a live event in Madison Square Garden, and he hopes to reclaim it. Styles hopes to hold onto the championship for some time.

While many are clamoring for Styles to move back into the WWE title picture, I would like to see him have a meaningful run with the US title. He plans on hosting an Open Challenge, and it would be interesting to see less-utilized guys have a chance to wrestle with him. Styles can make anyone look good, so this Open Challenge should be a great idea.

As for Owens, I’m not quite sure where he would go from here, but he always makes his way back. He lost his first ever feud on the main roster. As Universal Champion, he was a complete joke. But he recovered. He always does. Him losing to Styles will not be the end of his career.

Randy Orton v. Jinder Mahal

While many view the result of this match as a “rock and hard place” scenario, I don’t think it is. There is only one preferable outcome to the Punjabi Prison match. Orton needs to regain his championship.

The Jinder experiment has run its course. Mahal’s been cutting the same weaksauce promos for 8 weeks now. People have stopped caring about the WWE Championship. That’s not good.

While another Orton reign is not something anyone is looking forward to, it would be a lot better. For one, Orton can cut a promo without sounding like a teen currently going through puberty while smoking two packs a day. Mahal’s voice cracks more one promo than there are days in his title reign.

Lastly, Mahal wrestles a fairly pedestrian style that doesn’t exactly light the world on fire. If Orton were to regain the championship, he could actually have good matches. If he were to defend the WWE title against Nakamura, Corbin, or Owens at Summerslam, that could be great. It sounds better than Mahal v. Cena or something.

WWE Battleground Kickoff Match Confirmed

WWE added a new match for this Sunday’s Battleground pay-per-view event and confirmed a match for the “Kickoff” show. Tye Dillinger will compete against Aiden English during the Kickoff. Coincidentally, this isn’t the first time the two SmackDown Live superstars fought in the pre-show as they battled in the Backlash Kickoff show last May in Chicago. Dillinger won the match in approximately eight minutes. Ahead of Sunday’s show, a SmackDown Live Fallout video was released featuring English performing a song about Dillinger.

Main Show Rematch

For the main pay-per-view show, Sami Zayn will have a rematch against Mike Kanellis. Zayn and Kanellis wrestled during the latest SmackDown Live, which served as Kanellis’s in-ring debut. Kanellis won the match, although with heavy interference from Maria Kanellis.

Brock Lesnar Rumors Swirling

Brock Lesnar is back in the news again, as rumors are now swirling about The Beast returning to UFC this year. According to a twitter account that has broken UFC news in the past, is currently saying that Lesnar is back in the USDA testing pool for an Octagon return.

I just had a 2nd person tell me that Brock Lesnar is back in the USADA testing pool. Rumor around WWE is Brock is dropping the belt at SS.

— #Dizz © (@TalkMMA) July 19, 2017

Paul Heyman and Brock were at the UFC HQ during IFW. Had a meeting with the UFC brass. Brock's return is eminent. Most likely at MSG on Nov4

— #Dizz © (@TalkMMA) July 19, 2017

He's said to be giving up the title to Roman at #SummerSlam https://t.co/oednolBbAJ

— #Dizz © (@TalkMMA) July 19, 2017

Now, at this point, these are just rumors, but with past WWE talk of pushing up Roman vs Lesnar to SummerSlam after planning on it for next year’s WrestleMania, this could just be pieces of the puzzle falling into place. We will probably get a clear picture of things as SummerSlam draws closer.

And, of course, there’s his announcing his retirement from MMA to consider (his USDA one year suspension should have just ended, but it was frozen since he was no longer in the testing pool; I suppose he could always get another exemption). Like I said, these are just rumors.

WWE Battleground Poor Ticket Sales

With WWE Battleground coming up this Sunday, you’d think that the Wells Fargo Center would be close to sold out for the SmackDown Live PPV. That’s not the case, apparently. There are reportedly hundreds upon hundreds of tickets still available for the event, ranging in price from $25 to $500, with tickets on the secondary market going for an average price of right around $150.

Looks like that big old Punjabi Prison main event between Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal isn’t that big of a selling point for WWE. Not really a big surprise.
