Dave Meltzer mentioned in the latest installment of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that rumors of AJ Styles possibly facing John Cena at next year’s WrestleMania 34 event are incorrect.

Meltzer wrote, ”I’m told that right now that is incorrect, and Cena is in a much bigger match than Styles. The only thing I was told is it will be clear within a few weeks what that match is.”

Meltzer mentioned The Undertaker, Batista, Goldberg and possibly Hulk Hogan as opponents for Cena at Mania’.

The whole point of Clash of Champions is that every champion must defend their title. The chances of a title changing hands are quite high. Multi-man matches such as the triple threat for the US Championship and the fatal four-way tag team match almost guarantee a change in champions.

I believe that we’re going to see new champions come Sunday. Who do I believe will be a champion after Clash of Champions?

United States Champion: Baron Corbin

The whole point of booking a Triple Threat is so that the champion can lose their title without being pinned. However, I think that this Sunday, Corbin retains, but not by pinning Bobby Roode. I’m not a betting man, but I’d bet a considerable sum on Dolph Ziggler eating the pin.

It’s far too early to take the title off Baron Corbin. He’s found his groove as a character and as a champion. To take it away from him now would a a tad odd, to say the least. Besides, a babyface chasing the title is a much more compelling tale. A chase would provide Bobby Roode with some character other than “glorious is my word of the day.”

The strange addition of Ziggler to the match pretty much means he’s there to protect the loser. It’s sad, but it’s true. Corbin is pinning Ziggler, and this extends the feud to at least another month.

Smackdown Women’s Champion: Carmella

Carmella’s been holding the Money in the Bank contract for an awful long time. It’s not unlikely that she cashes in. In fact, I think it’s quite likely. The lumberjack match stipulation pretty much ensures that the Riott Squad will be involved in the match at Clash of Champions. Should Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan, and Sarah Logan interrupt the match and decimate both Charlotte and Natalya, who should pick the bones but Ms. Money in the Bank herself?

This frees up Charlotte to team up with Naomi to face the growing threat that is the Riott Squad. This leaves a possible dearth of challengers for Carmella should she become champion, but it is what it is. The absence of Becky Lynch is affecting the division, but I honestly believe Carmella is walking away from Boston with the Smackdown Women’s Championship.

While John Cena is currently being advertised for the Christmas edition of RAW on December 25th, he’s also being advertised for the December 30th SmackDown Live Event. Cena is scheduled to face AJ Styles in Jinder Mahal in a triple-threat match for the WWE Championship Title.

As previously reported, Cena took time off from WWE television after Survivor Series to work on his non-WWE commitments.

Charlotte On Her Father’s Surprise SmackDown Live Appearance

As we all saw on this past week’s SmackDown Live, Ric Flair made his first appearance in WWE since his serious health issues of last summer. Flair made a surprise appearance on the show after his daughter Charlotte defeated Natalya for the SmackDown Women’s Title.

During a recent interview, Charlotte discussed that emotional moment.

“He’s done so much to pave the way for me, and then being able to win the title in my hometown and knowing that he’s back he’s healthy and to celebrate that moment when he was sick all I could think about was my dad never seen me wrestle again so that was really hard. So sharing that moment was nice.”

AJ Styles Only Has A Few Years Left?

AJ Styles is obviously one of the best professional wrestlers on the planet, and he’s definitely the best in-ring talent on WWE’s roster. During a recent interview, Styles hinted that his WWE run will only be lasting a couple more years, though.

“The older you get, the less energy you have to maintain it!. It is what it is, but if you still have that drive and you can still do it, why not? Get in the gym and get it done, and look good in the meantime.

“Work hard now, you enjoy it later. In a couple of years, I’ll be able to catch every football game, every baseball game, every basketball game, cheerleading, gymnastics, whatever they’re in.”

So, it sounds like we need to enjoy The Phenomenal One while we can.

As seen on tonight’s episode of SmackDown Live, Daniel Bryan mocked Paul Heyman’s segment with Brock Lesnar from RAW this past week by portraying the “personal advocate” for AJ Styles. Also in the segment, AJ called out Brock Lesnar for losing his first UFC Fight by submission.

As of this writing, there are no plans to put the WWE Title back on Jinder Mahal before next week’s Survivor Series event. It’s very possible that Mahal could win the championship back before WWE’s tour of India next month.

Another scenario could see AJ Styles added to the India tour, change the title there and then set up a rematch between the two at the December Clash of Champions event in Boston. Styles vs. Mahal was originally planned to headline Clash of Champions, but those plans were changed when Vince McMahon decided to change up Survivor Series plans.

The last month has been a crazy time to be a fan of the WWE. First, there was an illness striking down key players like Roman Reigns, forcing Kurt Angle to return to the ring at TLC, and now, AJ styles has just defeated Jinder Mahal on an episode of Smackdown to become the new WWE champion.

Styles’ unlikely victory and The Bar picking up the tag team titles from Ambrose and Rollins on Monday night has given Survivor Series a little makeover this week, and with Natalya facing Charlotte on next week’s Smackdown, don’t be surprised to see another change just yet.

Survivor Series is now shaping up to be one hell of a card, and with the WWE in full-blown surprise mode at the moment, anything is possible a week on Sunday. The show is famous for its twists and turns and the inter-brand warfare angle allows them plenty of opportunities to set up future matches and angles, especially with Wrestlemania season on the horizon.

So what twists ight this year’s Survivor Series have in store for us? Let’s take a look at five potential twists we could see next Sunday night.

Carmella cashes in, on Alexa Bliss 

Carmella has been teasing her Money in the Bank cash-in for months now and every pay-per-view that roles around creates speculation as to how and when she is going to do it. The logical assumption has always been that she is going to cash it on the Smackdown Woman’s Champion, whoever that happens to be, but it has not been made clear as to whether or not she can cash it on just the blue brand’s champion, or either of the women’s champs.

Survivor Series will see the two brand’s champions clash, and while the Smackdown side of things could see either Natalya or Charlotte as champ, Raw’s is definitely going to be Bliss.

Having Carmella cash in on Bliss would be a huge surprise, but if the opportunity were to present itself, then from a kayfabe point of view, she would be stupid not to take it.

She has also just presumably, severed her ties with James Ellsworth, which would free her up to join Monday nights and potentially join up with her real-life partner, Big Cass, who should be set to return from injury very soon. Having Carmella use Cass as protection would be a great gimmick for her, and would also present a strong challenge for Asuka, who is inevitably going to be winning the title in the very near future. Doing this at the start of the night would really establish a sense of ‘anything can happen tonight’ for the pay-per-view as well.

Well, it’s official. AJ Styles is the new WWE World Champion. During the tapings for tonight’s SmackDown Live in Manchester, Styles defeated Jinder Mahal to become the new WWE Champion (and I must say, even though I am not a fan of Jinder’s match, that other than some scary spots, this was easily Mahal’s best WWE match to date). And, yep, this means that Styles is headed to Survivor Series to face Brock Lesnar…at least for now.

As we reported last week when this match was announced, there was speculation that the hype for Brock Lesnar vs Jinder Mahal was not good for this month’s Survivor Series. People were not excited about the match, and WWE may have been feeling that they needed someone else in that spot with Lesnar to sell the “main event” of this month’s brand vs brand PPV.

So, now, unless something happens, something squirrelly, some kind of WWE-swerve, AJ is headed to Survivor Series next Sunday to square off with WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar. This is definitely a better match than Lesnar and Mahal would have been, and fans are bound to be more interested in AJ facing Lesnar. Unfortunately, this puts WWE in the position of having to choose which of their top champions wins.

Brock can deal with a loss since he only shows up once in a while, but unless they are planning to take the title off AJ Styles before the India tour in December to put it back on Mahal, he really doesn’t need to eat a loss so soon after winning the title.
