REVIEW: Starrcade 1998: It All Comes Crashing Down

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over ten years now and have reviewed over 5,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net, starting today. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Starrcade 1998 Date: December 27, 1998 Location: MCI Center, Washington, D.C. Attendance: 16,066 Commentators: Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay, Bobby Heenan It’s the biggest show of the year and I don’t know how many people know about it. I don’t remember the same show feeling so different just a year later. Last year Starrcade felt like an event rather than just a wrestling show. This year it feels like it could be a Clash of the Champions TV special instead of the biggest show of the year. I have a very ..

Starrcade 2000 Date: December 17, 2000 Location: MCI Center, Washington, D.C. Attendance: 6,596 Commentators: Tony Schiavone, Mark Madden, Scott Hudson We’ve uh…..arrived. It’s the final edition of WCW’s flagship show and it’s looking somewhere between a bad C show and a horribly unfunny joke. The main event is Scott Steiner (won the title three weeks ago) defending against Sid Vicious (not in the promotion three weeks ago). Such is life in the dying days of this company. Let’s get to it. REVIEW: Starrcade 2018: The Tradition Continues

Starrcade 2018 Date: November 25, 2018 Location: US Bank Arena, Cincinnati, Ohio Commentators: Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton This is something that could range from interesting to head scratching. Last night, WWE held a big house show featuring stars from both shows under the name of Starrcade. The show ran about three and a half hours and tonight we’re seeing a one hour version with some special moments and matches selected. Let’s get to it. We open with Elias playing a little song. Bret Hart Praises Brock Lesnar And Slams Goldberg

That’s quite the shot. Wrestlers can come in all different shapes and sizes, meaning that they are going to wrestle all kinds of styles. It makes sense for wrestlers with different physical abilities to wrestle in different ways, as it makes sense to play to your strengths. However, the wrestlers also have to keep their opponents safe, which led one legend to criticize another. WWE Hall of Fame Bret Hart took part in a virtual signing for Signed By Superstars. During the signing, Hart mentioned that his niece Natalya had told him that Brock Lesnar saw Hart as his dream opponent. Hart responded by saying that he had always heard Lesnar was a good worker who looked stiff but took care of his opponents, unlike Goldberg. This is in reference to Goldberg superkicking Hart at Starrcade 1999, causing an injury which led to Hart’s retirement from the ring soon thereafter. Neither Goldberg nor Lesnar have responded to the statements. Opinion: I know it is has been over twenty years but I can ..

WWE Bringing Back Saturday Night’s Main Event (In A Different Way)

From back in the day. There is so much WWE programming in a given week that it can be pretty difficult to keep track of everything. That is the case at the moment, as WWE has four shows on television alone and ignoring all of their streaming shows. Some of them are a lot more important than others, but now WWE might be bringing back one of the most important shows of all time, but not as it seems. WWE is bringing back Saturday Night’s Main Event as a pair of live event specials. The shows will take place on April 23 in Montgomery, Alabama and on April 30 in Lakeland, Florida. There is no word on if WWE will be filming these shows for future release or if these are merely special live events. Saturday Night’s Main Event ran for thirty eight episodes from 1985-2008. Opinion: This sounds like something that is just happening as a special live event and that is perfectly fine. WWE did the same thing with Starrcade a few years ago and it was a cool thing to see. I’m not sure if this is go..

Former WWE Referee Mickie Jay Passes Away At Age 58

We have some sad news to report today as former WWE referee Mickie Jay Henson has passed away at the age of 59 due to complications from pneumonia, related to COVID-19. From WWE.com: Henson officiated his first match in 1987 at the Eddie Graham Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida. He then joined WCW in 1992 and went on to referee in some of the promotion’s most memorable matches, including the ending of Goldberg’s historic undefeated streak at the hands of Kevin Nash at Starrcade 1998. Signing with WWE in 2005, Henson then brought his officiating expertise to more incredible bouts for years to come featuring the likes of John Cena, Kurt Angle, The Undertaker, Edge, and many more. We at Wrestling Rumors extended our deepest condolences to the Henson family during this difficult time. “GET EXCLUSIVE UPDATES! REVIEW: Starrcade 1997: The Night WCW Fell

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Starrcade 1997 Date: December 28, 1997 Location: MCI Center, Washington, D.C. Attendance: 17,500 Commentators: Eric Bischoff, Dusty Rhodes, Mike Tenay Tonight is WCW’s night. After a year and a half of being dominated by the NWO, tonight is the night that WCW stands up and says this is our company and you’re not taking us over. WCW has its warrior in Sting and there is no way that Hogan can stop him. Hogan has been running scared of Sting for months and tonight he’s out of places to hide. This is WCW’s night. Let’..

Monday Nitro #272 Date: December 4, 2000 Location: Pershing Auditorium, Lincoln, Nebraska Attendance: 3,433 Commentators: Tony Schiavone, Mark Madden, Scott Hudson Starrcade is rapidly approaching and WCW is clearly on its (final) last legs. We’re building towards a double main event of Goldberg vs. Lex Luger II and Scott Steiner vs. Sid for the World Title. If you need a better reason than that to explain why WCW is in the shape it’s in, you haven’t been paying close enough attention. Let’s get to it. We open wi..

REVIEW: Starrcade 2019: The Tradition Continues

Starrcade 2019 Date: December 1, 2019 Location: Infinite Energy Arena, Duluth, Georgia Commentators: Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton I mean, it has been a whole week since their last big event. This is another one of those house shows that is airing on the Network in a shortened form. It isn’t exactly something interesting though last year’s show was pretty good. The two matches announced aren’t exactly breaking new ground but they could be good. Let’s get to it. The announcers talk about the history of Starrcade and ..

WWE Star Issues Bounty On Shelton Benjamin

You don’t hear about that very often. There are certainly angles that take place more than once in wrestling, but only after a long time has passed. That was the case with the bounty, as Harley Race offered thousands of dollars to anyone who would take out Ric Flair before Starrcade 1983. Triple H did the same thing with Goldberg in 2003, but now we are getting a slightly different version of the idea. This week’s Monday Night Raw featured the return of the Hurt Business, as Cedric Alexander and Shelton Benjamin rejoined Bobby Lashley. The reformed team attempted to cost Big E. the WWE Title but the New Day made the save. WWE star Mia Yim has tweeted about the situation, offering any member of the New Day $20 to take out Benjamin. New Day has yet to respond to the offer. The new day Vs hurt business…. I love it!!! Which one wanna take my $20 to take out Shelton?! @WWEBigE @AustinCreedWins @TrueKofi #WWERaw — The HBIC (@MiaYim) September 28, 2021 This is a different one. Check out a..

KB’s Review: The Midnight Express Should Give WWE Sneering Lessons

You can call wrestling a lot of things, but ultimately it is about telling a story. That can be accomplished in a lot of different ways, but there are a few things that have to be there to make the whole thing work. You need the right characters, the right story and the right actions, but you also need the right energy. If the vibe isn’t right, the whole thing is not going to work out. An old clip made me think about this earlier this week and it kind of shows you something that is missing from modern wrestling. First off, the clip: [This post contains video, click to play] And now, some backstory. This is from Starrcade 1987 in Chicago, with the United States Tag Team Champions, the Midnight Express (Beautiful Bobby Eaton on the left and Sweet Stan Lane on the right. If you somehow haven’t seen them before….egads man get out of this thing and go watch one of the best teams of all time.), on the way to the ring for a non-title Skywalkers (scaffold) match. Jim Cornette and his bodyg..

NXT Announces Great American Bash 2021

It’s a summer tradition. Tonight at the 2021 edition of NXT Takeover: In Your House, the company announced the date for its next big special event. Last summer, NXT ran The Great American Bash for two nights, on July 1 and 8, 2020, and this year, the company is doing it again. The 2021 edition of the Great American Bash will take place on Tuesday, July 6, during the company’s regularly scheduled NXT program. No matches have been announced for the show as of now. Check out what the company did last year, as well as the announcement of the show: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] Editor’s Opinion: I love the concept of NXT taking special events from WCW’s past and utilizing them as special events in the present. The company has done that with Halloween Havoc, Starrcade and now the Great American Bash and it brings back a sense of nostalgia for the older fans. It also showcases and highlig..

REVIEW: Halloween Havoc 1997: The Old One

Halloween Havoc 1997 Date: October 26, 1997 Location: MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada Attendance: 12,457 Commentators: Tony Schiavone, Dusty Rhodes, Bobby Heenan This was another request and since I want to get some WCW PPVs done I have no problem knocking this one out. We’re two months out from Starrcade so this show doesn’t mean much. We have something resembling a double main event with Hogan vs. Piper in a cage and DDP vs. Savage in what would be called a last man standing match. Let’s get to it. After..

Watch: Sting’s WCW World Championship Victories

The Icon has that name for a reason. WWE has posted a new video to their YouTube channel in which they show all of the televised WCW World Heavyweight Championship victories by Hall of Famer, Sting. You can see the video in its entirety below: [This post contains video, click to play] The world title victories are as follows: Ric Flair, Great American Bash, 1990 Lex Luger, Superbrawl II, 1992 Ravishing Rick Rude, Spring Stampede, 1994 Vader, Slamboree, 1994 Hollywood Hogan, Starrcade 1997 Hollywood Hogan, Superbrawl VIII, 1998 Diamond Dallas Page, Monday Nitro, 1999 Hulk Hogan, Fall Brawl, 1999 Editor’s Opinion: Watching this video brought back a lot of memories. I remember hearing Jim Ross call matches for WCW back when I was growing up, and understanding what I do now about professional wrestling, it still brings back a great deal of nostalgia. Sting was always one of my favorite WCW superstars, and it’s cool to see WWE acknowledging his accomplishments and I hope that they do ..

Starrcade 2018 Live Coverage And Results

Starrcade 2018 Date: November 25, 2018 Location: US Bank Arena, Cincinnati, Ohio Commentators: Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton This is something that could range from interesting to head scratching. Last night, WWE held a big house show featuring stars from both shows under the name of Starrcade. The show ran about three and a half hours and tonight we’re seeing a one hour version with some special moments and matches selected. Let’s get to it. We open with Elias playing a little song. He knows it can’t get better than having him here but he’s willing to try with a special guest. That would be Ric Flair, who puts Elias over as a big deal. Elias thinks they need to sing a son off his album and asks people to silence their cell phones, but here are Nia Jax, Mickie James, Tamina and Alicia Fox to cut them off. Nia says they want to walk with him and Flair is rather pleased. Flair calls them all beautiful and Elias sings some of Elias’ Words. Even Flair gets in a few lines and dances a bit u..

Video: Ric Flair Sings With Elias At Starrcade

That’s a special one. This weekend, WWE presented a special house show in the form of Starrcade. The original run of the show was the biggest event of the year for the NWA/WCW and was brought back last year for the first time since December 2000. The show was almost a tribute to WCW and the theme continued to a certain degree this year, including a special appearance from Ric Flair. Saturday night at Starrcade, Flair appeared for a concert with Elias. Before the singing began, the two of them talked for a bit with Flair saying he was a big fan of Elias and his music. He even said that Elias could have any woman in the company, save for Charlotte of course. The two of them were eventually joined by Tamina, Nia Jax, Alicia Fox and Mickie James. Here’s what happened: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: This is the kind of thing that makes such a show feel important and that’s what they were going for here. Flair was one of the stars of the show and it made for an entert..

Well Hello Again. Former World Champion Returns At Starrcade.

Sometimes you get a surprise. This weekend, WWE presented Starrcade as a special house show. The event certainly has some history to it, even in WWE as it was held last year as well. The card was stacked and featured two steel cage matches and a special appearance from Ric Flair. However, in addition to the big card, there was a special surprise for the fans in attendance. Bray Wyatt made his return at Starrcade, answering an open challenge from Baron Corbin and defeating him with a rollup. After the pin, Corbin restarted the match with no disqualifications. This brought out Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre to beat Wyatt down but Elias and Finn Balor made the save, allowing Wyatt to pick up the win with Sister Abigail. This was Wyatt’s first match since September 15 on Monday Night Raw. There is no word on when Wyatt will return to TV. How about a fresh one of these? [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: Cool. Wyatt being back is a good sign as the company can always u..

Starrcade 2018 Live Report And Review

Sure why not. Last year, WWE brought back Starrcade in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, marking the first edition of the show in about seventeen years. Now it seems to be a tradition over Thanksgiving weekend (the show’s original time, at least in general) and I took in this year’s edition in the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio. The show ran over three and a half hours, including a fifteen minute intermission. Before the show, they aired an ad for the Wednesday night lineup, including the Mae Young Classic. The show that ended a month ago. The crowd was hot all night and attendance was strong, with some sections blocked off. I didn’t see a hard camera so I’m not sure how this was shot, though there were regular cameramen around all night. The show opened with a tribute video to Dusty Rhodes, who created the idea for Starrcade. This was well received and you could tell the fans were slightly older here, with a lot of Ric Flair and Dusty fans all night long. After a Welcome to Starrc..

Dolph Ziggler Working Through An Injury

Make sure to show off the wound. Whether you like him or not, there is no denying that Dolph Ziggler is one of the most athletic wrestlers around. He can make some of the most difficult looking moves around look so easy and that has been the case for years. However, there is always the chance that he might be slowed down a little bit by an injury, which seems to be the case now. According to Post Wrestling, Ziggler is dealing with some kind of a foot injury. Ziggler wrestled at the Survivor Series pay per view on Sunday but didn’t appear the following night on Monday Night Raw. There is no word on when he was injured or how long he has been dealing with the issue, or how long he might be out of action. At the moment he is scheduled to appear at Saturday’s Starrcade event, but hasn’t been announced for a match. Here’s one of Ziggler’s most recent efforts: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: Injuries are never a good thing and hopefully Ziggler is fine enough sooner r..
