There had to be a limit. One of the bigger wrestling stories over the last several months has been the return of several former WWE stars to the company. WWE released well over 100 wrestlers from their contracts over the previous year and a half, but now the Triple H regime has brought several of them back. However, things might be changing a bit as we move forward. The New King: Gunther Sets Impressive All Time Record In Royal Rumble Match

Down it goes. Wrestling is like any other sport in a lot of ways, including by having numbers and statistics play a huge role. There are certain records that are well known among wrestling fans, but every now and then one of those numbers will fall. It can be a big deal when something like that happens, and it happened again in a big way this weekend on a grand stage. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Homecoming: Surprise Return Kicks Off WWE Royal Rumble This weekend, WWE presented its annual Royal Rumble event. The show opened with the Men’s Royal Rumble match, which saw Gunther enter at #1 and set a new longevity record for the match. Gunther lasted 1:11:25, breaking Rey Mysterio’s record of 62:12 set in 2006. Commentary did make it clear that Gunther’s record was in traditional Royal Rumble matches, as Daniel Bryan lasted 74:12 in the Greatest Royal Rumble in 2018, though that match had 50 entrants compared to the traditional 30. In most cases, the issues are written in black and white, but there are some cases that can be a bit more of a gray area. Now WWE is changing something up from what once was pretty straightforward to something a bit more complicated. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Extension Granted: Sami Zayn’s Original Plans With The Bloodline Were Very, Very Different In the 2023 edition of the Rumble By The Numbers video, the all time longevity record is once again held by Rey Mysterio in the 2006 Royal Rumble. This changes from previous editions, which listed Daniel Bryan’s 2018 performance in the Greatest Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia as the longer run. WWE Breaks All-Time Gate Record For WrestleMania 39

People are excited. WWE issued a press release today, stating that they have broken the company’s all-time gate record for any WrestleMania, despite having yet to announce a single match. The previous record announced was $17.3 million in 2016 at WrestleMania 32 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. From the press release: The record gate comes on the heels of unprecedented ticket sales demand for WWE in 2022, in which it produced the highest-grossing gates of all-time for Royal Rumble, Survivor Series and Extreme Rules. Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales, which marked WWE’s first major stadium show in the U.K. in 30 years, was the highest-grossing U.K. event in company history. Additionally, WWE set in-market gate records for SmackDown and Raw events in more than 20 markets for the year, including the December 30 SmackDown, which took place in Tampa, Fla. and heralded the return of WWE Superstar John Cena. It means a lot for a star to appear on one of those shows as there is great exposure than on almost any other platform. That is the case this week as well, and now we know just how big things were on a recent major event. Some of the highlights include: Viewership was up 46%, making it the more viewed Survivor Series on record. In-venue merchandise sales were the highest on record and up 20% over the 2021 Survivor Series. The live gate set records for both Survivor Series and any WWE event in Boston. It can be a terrible thing to see a wrestler be hurt, but not all injures are created equally. Over the decades, WWE has put together all kinds of shows and events that take place on a regular basis. These are some of the most famous events in all of wrestling and now WWE seems set to break a record with a show that has been running for well over thirty years. WWE has announced that the 2023 Royal Rumble will be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on January 28. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, the show has already sold $4.6 million in tickets, the second highest advance total ever. That’s a good step forward. Wrestlers are larger than life characters who are regularly on television doing things that no one else would ever do in regular life. That can make for some rather interesting moments, though that is not the end of what happens to them. There are several things that take place after the cameras stop rolling and now a former wrestler is getting some good news in his personal life. Last month, Patrick Clark, better known as Velveteen Dream, was arrested twice in the span of a week on various charges. However, according to PWInsider.com, the August 20 charges of First Degree Battery and Trespassing have been closed, as a hearing scheduled for September 28 has been canceled. Court records cited a lack of evidence in dropping the charges. Clark was recently released from a 25 day jail sentence for a probation violation stemming from the August 20 charges. Opinion: That is some good news for Clark, but he still has more than enough legal issues to worry about. ..

Well Done: Upcoming WWE Event Likely To Set An All Time Record

Records are made to be broken. WWE has been running major events for a very long time now and that will continue to be the case for several years to come. After nearly forty years of pay per view events, WWE is running out of ideas, but there are still some things that they have not done very often. This includes not running many outside of the United States, though that will change this year, and in a record setting way. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, September’s Clash At The Castle event in Cardiff, Wales has sold about 40,000 tickets so far. A sellout of the stadium will be about 69,000 fans and if that takes place, as it should, the event will be the largest non-WrestleMania gate in wrestling history, as well as beating most WrestleManias. We might have to wait on that one. AEW has not been around for very long but they have managed to put together one of the best pay per view track records in wrestling history. It is rare for the company to have a major show that is less than great and that makes the announcement of a new one all the more special. AEW will be back on pay per view next month but one match might be missing from the card. This week’s edition of AEW Dynamite featured the debut of Buddy Matthews as the newest member of the House of Black. Matthews helped attack Pac and Penta Obscura of the Death Triangle, including stomping Obsccura’s face into a chair. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, this is not expected to result in a six man tag between Death Triangle and the House of Black as Rey Fenix will not be medically cleared from his elbow injury in January. A WWE Title Record Was Broken This Week (And That Makes It More Impressive)

That’s what they are made for. With so many wrestlers on the WWE roster, it cannot be easy to make yourself stand out. One of the few ways to do so is win a title and then hold onto it for a very long time. There have been quite a few longstanding title reigns over the years and several records have been set in the company’s history. One of them was broken this week. Earlier this week, the Usos became the longest reigning SmackDown Tag Team Champions in history, with their reign having reached 188 days as of Saturday. This breaks the previous record of 182 days, which was also set by the Usos in their 2017-2018 reign. The Usos are currently in their fifth reign with the titles and have held the championships for a record 568 days and counting. WWE Star Sets Third Guinness World Record This Year

She did it again. Wrestling is a little bit different when it comes to records as it is a little bit difficult to buy what a wrestling promotion or a wrestler says happened. It can get a little confusing with everything going on and how many different ways a company likes to stretch the truth, but sometimes you can get some outside sources. That is the case again for a pretty impressive WWE milestone. Guinness World Records has announced that WWE’s Natalya has officially set the record for most matches won by a woman in the history of the company. As of November 2021, Natalya won her 641st match, which means the record breaking win could have come on November 10 at a live event in Manchester, England or in a tag match on the November 19 SmackDown. This comes less than two months after Natalya was certified as having the most matches and pay per view appearances by a woman in WWE history.
