WWE has issued the following press release, announcing the 2023 King and Queen of the Ring event: The General Entertainment Authority, in cooperation with WWE, has announced that WWE King and Queen Of The Ring will be held at the Jeddah Superdome, the world’s largest pillarless Superdome, on Saturday, May 27, 2023. WWE King and Queen Of The Ring is happening in Jeddah, alongside a host of additional exciting events happening in Jeddah throughout the year. This marks the first King Of The Ring Premium Live Event to be held since 2015 and the first crowning of a Queen since the inaugural Queen’s Crown Tournament which took place at WWE Crown Jewel in Riyadh in 2021. It’s worth looking at again. There are a lot of recurring ideas throughout the history of WWE and some of them are around more often than others. WWE often adds a prize to the competition, usually in the form of a title or a shot at a title down the line. Welcome back. There are a lot of wrestlers on the WWE roster and it can be easy to forget that some of them are around. Once you forget, it can be even easier to see them slip away for one reason or another. Sometimes that is due to some kind of an injury and that might be the case again. This time though, a wrestler seems like she is ready to make her big return. WWE’s Queen Zelina has sent out a tweet saying that “your queen will return soon.” This comes after Zelina has not wrestled a match since the April 11 Monday Night Raw, during which she suffered an undisclosed injury. That could have been worse. Injuries are a part of wrestling that are never going to be completely eradicated no matter what. The amount of experience and training a wrestler has can only make them so safe as someone always has the chance to get hurt. There are some things that are inherently dangerous no matter what and that was the case this weekend. This weekend’s Impact Wrestling Slammiversary event featured the first ever Queen Of The Mountain match. During the match, Chelsea Green and Deonna Purrazzo were shoved off a ladder and out of the ring, sending them through a table. According to PWInsider.com, both Green and Purrazzo are ok after their crash and are not expected to miss any time from the ring. Jordynne Grace won the match to regain the Knockouts Title. Opinion: That could have been so much worse as you never can tell how something like that is going to go. It was a busy night. Titles are the easiest concept in wrestling because anyone gets the idea of someone wearing a shiny belt. You can easily figure out the idea and it is a simple match to set up: someone has a title and someone else wants it. That makes title changes some of the most important parts of a wrestling promotion and there were quite a few of them this weekend. Impact Wrestling held their Slammiversary pay per view over the weekend, marking the company’s twentieth anniversary. There were five title matches on the show with four titles changing hands. I’m not sure what that is going to mean, but the good thing is that things haven’t been too terrible so far. Young is set to challenge Josh Alexander for the World Title at Slammiversary but the show needs some more buildup first. Let’s get to it. The opening recap looks at last week’s main event, with Violent By Design beating Josh Alexander and the Briscoes. We get a new opening sequence, complete with a THIS IS TNA voiceover, albeit set to the current roster. They have a list. WWE’s women’s division has come a very long way in the last several years. After spending so much time as little more than eye candy, women’s wrestling has become a major part of WWE’s presentation, with several wrestlers being able to make their mark on the company. Some of the current group have done so more than others and WWE has put them in a list. Earlier this week, a report surfaced revealing the internal list of WWE’s male stars. Now, a similar list has been revealed, according to PWInsider.com. The six main women on the Monday Night Raw roster have been sorted into a babyface and heel group. In descending order, Bianca Belair, Alexa Bliss and Rhea Ripley are listed as the top babyfaces while Becky Lynch, Carmella and Queen Zelina are listed as the top heels. Opinion: That is quite the interesting list, though it tells me that Monday Night Raw needs some stronger heel women. So much for that. With so many wrestlers on the WWE roster, it makes a lot of sense to pair some of them up. That has worked out well in a lot of situations, as some of the teams and pairings have been quite the successes. Some of them are among the best things going in WWE today, but they all have to end at some point. That was the case again this week in a surprise twist. Two different pairings split up this week on Monday Night Raw. First, the returning MVP turned on Bobby Lashley to side with Omos. Lashley and Omos were having a staredown when MVP attacked Lashley, allowing Omos to beat Lashley down and side with MVP. Later, Carmella and Queen Zelina get in an argument before their scheduled tag match, with Zelina attacking Carmella and leaving to officially end their team as well. Opinion: The Carmella/Zelina split has been building for some time, but the MVP/Lashley split seemed to come out of nowhere. It means a lot for a title change to take place and you do not get to see it happen very often with some championships. That makes a big time title change all the more important and that was the case more than once this weekend. There were two title changes during the second night of WrestleMania 38. First up, Sasha Banks and Naomi defeated Rhea Ripley/Liv Morgan, Natalya/Shayna Baszler and champions Carmella/Queen Zelina to win the Women’s Tag Team Titles for the first time. Then, in the show’s main event, Roman Reigns defeated Brock Lesnar to unify the Universal and WWE Titles. There is no word on what the new title will be called. Opinion: You knew that one of the titles was going to chance hands in the main event but the Women’s Tag Team Titles were a bit of a bonus. This year’s WrestleMania 38 will be the third straight edition to feature a two night event, meaning even more wrestlers will have the chance to be on the card. Now the number of wrestlers on the show has grown even higher. This week on SmackDown, Sonya Deville added Natalya and Shayna Baszler to the Women’s Tag Team Title match at WrestleMania 38, making the match a fatal four way. Natalya and Baszler interfered to cause a double DQ in a match between the original challengers, Liv Morgan/Rhea Ripley and Sasha Banks/Naomi. After the match, Baszler and Natalya motioned to the champions, Queen Zelina and Carmella, that they wanted the titles. Opinion: Sure why not. Welcome to the club. There are very few career honors for wrestlers, as the main prizes to be won are eventually lost to someone else. That does not leave many options available for career honors, though the WWE Hall of Fame is one of them. The WWE Hall of Fame has seen quite a few top level inductees and now another name has officially been announced to join its ranks. WWE has announced that Sharmell will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2022. Over the course of her career, Sharmell primarily served as Booker T.’s manager and was billed as Queen Sharmell during Booker’s time as King Booker. Sharmell joins the Undertaker and Vader as the three names announced for the class so far, with more likely to be added. The induction ceremony will take place on April 1 after SmackDown. There’s room for more. We are less than a month away from WrestleMania 38 and the question is starting to become how to get as many people onto the show as possible. There are only so many places to put all of these people and that can make for some issues. WWE has a few ways to add people to the lineup and that is what they have done again as a title match has grown. As a result, Morgan and Ripley have been added to the Women’s Tag Team Title match at WrestleMania 38, where Vega and Carmella are scheduled to defend against Sasha Banks and Naomi. The match is scheduled to take place on Sunday April 3. Opinion: I’m not wild on this kind of addition as it feels like a way to cram in everyone that can be placed into a match.
