Smackdown Date: March 10, 2023 Location: PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Commentators: Michael Cole, Wade Barrett We are just over three weeks away from Wrestlemania and the biggest development coming into this show was Jey Uso rejoining the Bloodline by taking out Sami Zayn. That seems to be the step that we have been waiting for on the way to whatever the Usos and Zayn are going to be doing at Wrestlemania so we might see something big tonight. Let’s get to it. We open with a recap of Jey rejoining his brother Jimmy on Smackdown. Cody Rhodes made the save to tie it into the World Title situation. The Usos arrive and are greeted by Paul Heyman. Jey asks where Roman Reigns is but Heyman hugs him. Jey says let Reigns know he’s here so Heyman goes to find him. When asked why he turned on Sami Zayn, Jey says he’ll make it clear tonight. Jimmy says Cody Rhodes needs to stay out of the Bloodline’s business. Opening sequence. Drew McIntyre vs. Sheamus vs. LA Knight vs. Xavier..
There’s your next awesome team. There are certain people in wrestling who catch your attention no matter what they are doing. Wrestlers like them are incredibly valuable to any promotion, as they can bring up all kinds of other stars along with them. In this case, one of the biggest stars in wrestling is doing something with one of them, though it is not going to be for the masses. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Set Your Clock: AEW Rampage Set For Time Change Due To Special NBA Coverage This week, Chris Jericho hosted his annual Rock N Wrestling Rager At Sea cruise. The cruise featured live wrestling, including a tag match between Chris Jericho and Danhausen against the Gunn Club. Jericho wrestled the match in full Danhausen gear, including face paint, while impersonating Danhausen throughout the match. Following the match, some guest stars appeared as well. It’s pretty awesome. Check out the match in full, plus some of them wrestlers in their more natural habitats: [This post contains vid..
He would know best. Retirement is a tricky situation in wrestling as it can be difficult for a wrestler to finally hang up their boots. The problem is that it can be so easy to come back for one more match or appearance, but some are able to go out on their own terms and know when to call it a career. Now a legend is saying that his career is not going to extend beyond this year. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Max Caster Messes Up Rap During AEW Rampage Taping (And It’s Funny) AEW’s Sting was interviewed by D Magazine (Dallas, Texas) and revealed that his deal with the company expires at some point this year. Once it ends, “so will his time behind the face paint”, according to the article. There is no word on what Sting will be doing for his final match or if he has any plans for his retirement. Sting has been paired with Darby Allin since his debut with AEW in December 2020. Sting’s time in AEW has gone quite well. Check out how some of it has gone: [This post contains video, click..
There’s the next step? WWE wrestlers appear on television on such a regular basis that eventually they are going to start feeling a bit stale. There are only so many ways to keep things fresh and sometimes one of the best ways is to have them go away for a bit. That seems to be the case with a current Monday Night Raw star, who is hinting at taking a break of her own. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Major Update To Bobby Lashley’s Monday Night Raw Status Over the last few weeks, Monday Night Raw’s Asuka has been hinting at making a change in her career. This week, she wrestled without wearing face paint for the first time in years. Now, following her loss to Rhea Ripley on this week’s Monday Night Raw, Asuka has sent out a tweet saying that “I’ll be on a trip for a while.” There is no word on if this means Asuka will be missing time from WWE television or what she will be doing when she gets back. I'll be on a trip for a while. — ASUKA / ??? (@WWEAsuka) December 13, 2022 Asuka ..
It’s one of the most important parts. There are several things that need to come together to make a wrestler a success. While the in-ring and speaking abilities play large roles, one of the first things that fans notice is the wrestler’s look. A wrestler with an interesting look is going to catch someone’s attention rather quickly and now a longtime WWE star has changed her look quite a bit. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Can You Blame Them: WWE Pleased As NXT Finisher Goes Viral (Video Included) This week on Monday Night Raw, Rhea Ripley defeated Asuka. Prior to the match, Asuka came to the ring with no paint on her face, even missing the black line across her cheeks and the green lines coming from her eyes and mouth. There is no word on why Asuka changed her look, though it does come after a series of tweets, suggesting that Asuka is planning a change. Here’s the new look compared to the old: IMG Credit: WWE Asuka has all kinds of abilities. Check out what she can do in the ring: [This ..
Smackdown Date: December 9, 2022 Location: PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Commentators: Michael Cole, Wade Barrett We’re coming up on the end of the year and that means the Royal Rumble is still pretty far away. This time around we have a Tag Team Title match as the Brawling Brutes challenge the Usos, which should be a good fight. Other than that, it’s time to get ready for next week’s Intercontinental Title match so let’s get to it. Tag Team Titles: Usos vs. Brawling Brutes The Brutes (Sheamus/Butch with Ridge Holland) are challenging while Sami Zayn and Solo Sikoa are here with the champs. Sheamus headlock takeovers Jimmy down to start and then blasts him with a clothesline. Butch comes in and gets taken into the corner for a throat first drop across the top as we take a break. Back with Butch still in trouble but managing a German suplex off the ropes. That’s enough for the tag off to Sheamus for the house cleaning. We get the stereo multiple forearms to the chest, wi..
They do look similar. The look is one of the most important concepts in all of wrestling. A wrestler needs to do something to catch your attention and looking a certain way is often near the top of the list. This could be in the form of a costume or something to make your face stand out and there are limitless possibilities. Now though, a WWE star is being accused of ripping off another look. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Sarah Logan made her return to WWE this week on SmackDown, along with the Viking Raiders. Logan laid out Zelina Vega and B Fab before posing with the team. She was also sporting a new look, which included having the top half of her face painted. Fans are now calling out Logan for copying the look of independent wrestler Max The Impaler, who uses a similar look. Logan has not yet commented on the accusations. Look, I absolutely love Sarah Logan but her new look makes me think of if you wanted Max the Impaler but instead you got the Wish version. pic.twitter.com/sEBiwPeGu2..
The tradition continues. Wrestlers are a lot of things but at the end of the day they are performers. They spend a long time getting to the point where they can do what they do at such a high level, including mastering their characters. Figuring them out can be rather difficult, but it can be quite the compliment when someone else figures them out almost as well. Over the last few years, Kayla Braxton has dressed as Paul Heyman and Sami Zayn for Halloween. WWE’s The Bump Instagram page has posted a video of Braxton and an unidentified person dressed as the Usos for this year’s Halloween. The two have Uso hats, painted on bears and a pair of title belts each. There is no word on if this will be mentioned on WWE TV. This is pretty impressive. Check out Braxton as an Uso: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: This is a case of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery as Braxton has clearly studied the Usos enough to make something like this work. The Halloween costu..
New, New, New World Order. WWE has posted a new video to its YouTube channel showing the full match between The Outsiders vs. Lex Luger, Sting & Randy Savage from WCW Bash at the Beach 1996. This marked the beginning of Hulk Hogan’s heel turn and the formation of the nWo. You can see the match in its entirety below: [This post contains video, click to play] From our own Thomas Hall: The Outsiders, coming to the ring to some generic music (probably for the only time ever in a bit of trivia that no one ever wondered about), have no third man to crank the drama up even higher. Before Team WCW comes out, here is Gene Okerlund to ask the Outsiders what is up. They confirm that the third man is here but they can handle it themselves for now. Tony: “THEN COME OUT HERE AND KICK THEIR TEETH IN RIGHT NOW!!!” Team WCW is all painted up together for a nice touch. Luger starts with….the yet-to-be-named Scott Hall (“This Outsider” according to Tony) and takes him into the corner where Sting tr..
Maybe he’ll swing by. There have been a lot of moves throughout the major wrestling rosters in recent years and there is nothing to suggest that those changes are ending. It can be fascinating to see who goes where and what happens to them, though it can be equally interesting to speculate on what is happening. That seems to be the case again, mainly due to a new piece of merchandise. AEW’s official online store is now selling an art print by former NXT star Sam Shaw (better known as Dexter Lumis). The print is from an original painting of Jon Moxley as done by Shaw and is individually numbers out of two hundred. There is no word on if this means Shaw is set to appear for AEW or if it is just a piece of memorabilia available. The 18×24 inch poster sells for $34.99. Just in- Only 200 AVAILABLE! Flashback? There are all kinds of ways to present wrestlers and many times it is with a rather specific gimmick. You might see something that is more or less serious, but there is often an idea there that is different than others. That idea can often need to be tweaked though, and that might be the case again, as a WWE star may be needing to change things up entirely. SmackDown’s Xia Li has released a video on Twitter showing her training. During the video, there are glimpses of a woman with her face painted like Tian Sha, Li’s former character in NXT. This could be a hint that Li will be returning to her old gimmick after she was drafted to SmackDown in October 2021. Since then, she has only wrestled one televised match, defeating Natalya in February. This might be a hint. Check out Li’s training video: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: I mean, why not? I don’t think you could make Li’s time on SmackDown that much worse so far, so why not see what else she can do?..
The champ has been here for a long time. WWE has announced that June 2022 will be John Cena month and that the company will be celebrating the superstar to honor the 20th anniversary of his debut. You can see his debut match below: [This post contains video, click to play] From WWE.com: WWE was forever changed on June 27, 2002, when a then-unknown powerhouse by the name of John Cena stormed onto SmackDown for the very first time. Answering an open challenge issued by Kurt Angle, Cena boldly declared himself an agent of “ruthless aggression” before paint-brushing The Olympic Gold Medalist across the face. The rest, as they say, is history. Sixteen World Title reigns, countless Attitude Adjustments, and numerous Hollywood blockbusters later, Cena’s debut remains a watershed moment in sports-entertainment lore, the introduction of arguably the biggest Superstar of the modern era, if not WWE history. In honor of the upcoming 20-year anniversary of that seminal night, WWE is paying ..
Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Spring Stampede 2000 Date: April 16, 2000 Location: United Center, Chicago, Illinois Attendance: 12,556 Commentators: Tony Schiavone, Mark Madden, Scott Hudson It’s the night of a million tournaments because TOURNAMENTS ARE AWESOME. The company was rebooted six days ago so all titles are vacant and Russo and Bischoff are here with their latest spray painting stable with the word New in the name. The main event is Jeff Jarrett vs. Diamond Dallas Page for the World Title because the one thing from the last few bori..
That doesn’t make it better. Wrestlers are like anyone else in that they have personal issues that take place behind the scenes. Some of these are more prominent than others and unfortunately a lot of them do not exactly paint wrestlers in the best light. That was the case last year and now we can see a bit more about just how bad the whole thing wound up being. Back in July, SmackDown’s Jimmy Uso was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Pensacola, Florida. Now TMZ has released video of the incident, which shows Uso yelling at the officer and swearing at him. The officer said that he hoped Uso passed his field sobriety tests, sending Uso into a rant against the officer, accusing him of making a remark that he shouldn’t have. The officer tried to calm things down and said Uso had misunderstood. Following his arrest, Uso was eventually ordered to complete classes related to the whole situation and has since done so. This isn’t the best thing. Check out the video from Uso’s arrest: [This po..
Monday Night Raw Date: March 28, 2022 Location: PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Commentators: Jimmy Smith, Corey Graves, Byron Saxton, Michael Cole It’s the last Raw before Wrestlemania and since this company doesn’t have the best ideas, that means this is Wrestlemania Raw. Hopefully that means we get some juice added to what has already been set for the card, because this isn’t looking like the strongest Wrestlemania so far. Let’s get to it. Here is Brock Lesnar to get things going (with Michael Cole being heard saying “yes sir” during his entrance). After a look at Lesnar taking over Roman Reigns’ dressing room on Smackdown and beating up a bunch of security, Lesnar gets to do his own introduction. Lesnar: “That might have been good but it sounded like it sucked.” We are on the way to Wrestlemania so Lesnar is going to give us his game plan for his match with Roman Reigns. They are going to go down memory lane in Suplex City and then go to the carnival. Reigns is taking..
Fare thee unwell? The biggest wrestling story of the week has been the announcement that Cody and Brandi Rhodes have left AEW. This was quite the shakeup, as Cody was one of the founders of the company and Brandi had been treated as a big deal throughout AEW’s existence. The pair are now gone though, and that has made for some surprising reactions from some people in AEW. According to Bryan Alvarez on the Wrestling Observer forum, by way of Wrestlingnews.co, several people backstage in AEW were happy that Brandi has left the company. While there were some names who have been supportive of Brandi after her departure, the majority are said to be happy that she is gone. There were no names mentioned as being happy or sad about Brandi leaving. Opinion: I don’t know how well Brandi was received backstage but this does not seem to paint her in the most positive light. Brandi is good at what she does when she gets in front of a camera, but that does not mean it plays well backstage. I’m not..
Royal Rumble 2000 Date: January 23, 2000 Location: Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York Attendance: 19,231 Commentators: Jerry Lawler, Jim Ross This is the first of the two redos of the year and you picked a good one. What we have here is one of the better one two punches in WWF history, as it’s a double main event. Of course there is the Rumble, but we also have Cactus Jack vs. HHH for the WWF Title in a street fight, which should work out fairly well. Let’s get to it. The opening video looks at some of Cactus Jack’s most violent moments over the years, with HHH still thinking he knows what he is getting into. Some of the Japanese deathmatch stuff here is rather insane looking and wasn’t something you would see on WWF (or American) TV at the time (or in modern times either really). The set is really cool, as it has the entrance opposite the hard camera. There is a taxi hanging over the aisle, which is painted like a street for the street fight. Remember when they put in a..
He’s a big one. There are legends in the wrestling world and then there is Hulk Hogan. While the last few years have not seen him painted in the best light due to some rather bad decisions, Hogan is still one of the biggest stars in the history of wrestling and the reason a lot of fans watch today. He still draws some interest today and now it seems that things are not going so well for him. During the debut episode of his Wooooo Nation Uncensored podcast, Ric Flair revealed that Hulk Hogan is undergoing some serious health issues. While Flair did not elaborate on what was wrong, he did talk about how the two support each other, including Hogan visiting Flair while he was in a coma in 2017. There is no word on what is wrong with Hogan, though he has had several back surgeries over there years. Flair and Hogan have a longstanding history. Check out what the two have done over the years: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] [This post..
I’d say he went the extra mile. There are a lot of wrestlers in the world today and only a handful of them really get to stand out. Some of them are willing to do whatever it takes to make their company look good and it shows quite a bit. You do not get to see that kind of dedication very often, and now one of the most well known for it is showcasing himself outside of the ring as well. The Miz is a contestant on this season of Dancing With The Stars, partnering with professional dancer Witney Carson. The fourth week of the competition was Disney Week, featuring the dancers in Disney inspired costumes. Miz painted himself blue as the Genie from Aladdin while performing Friend Like Me. Miz is still active in the competition through four weeks and is one of the final eleven participants out of fifteen. He does this rather well.
