Welcome back. A wrestler returning from an injury can be one of the more exciting things to take place on a wrestling show. If someone has been gone for a long time, it can be quite the moment to have them back. You never know when you might see someone pop back up, and sometimes they are thrown right into the middle of something important. That was the situation this week. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Get Well Soon: Missing WWE Star Reportedly Undergoes Shoulder Surgery This week’s edition of NXT opened with North American Champion Wes Lee issuing an open challenge for a title match, with the first wrestler getting into the ring getting the shot. Dabba-Kato almost made it to the ring first but Apollo Crews cut him off, allowing the returning Nathan Frazer to get inside for the title shot. This was Frazer’s first match since Halloween Havoc on October 22, 2022. Back on November 8, Frazer revealed that he was waiting on medical clearance from an undisclosed injury. Frazer went on to lose to..
That’s some secret keeping. Wrestling receives a lot of criticism for being planned in advance. There is some truth to that, but at the same time, there is a lot of work and effort that goes into making fans believe that what they are seeing is at least somewhat realistic. Every so often you see a genuine response in wrestling though and that was double the case this weekend. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: LOOK: Popular AEW Star Backstage At WWE Royal Rumble Last Saturday, WWE presented its annual Royal Rumble event. The show opened with the surprise return of Pat McAfee to the commentary team, ending a four month hiatus. According to PWInsider.com, WWE made McAfee’s return as much of a surprise as possible, with co-commentators Michael Cole and Corey Graves having no idea he would be back. There was also a “quick scramble” to get McAfee a chair and headset. It is currently unknown if McAfee’s return is full time or just for the Royal Rumble. It was a big night. Check out some of the show’s..
Down it goes. Wrestling is like any other sport in a lot of ways, including by having numbers and statistics play a huge role. There are certain records that are well known among wrestling fans, but every now and then one of those numbers will fall. It can be a big deal when something like that happens, and it happened again in a big way this weekend on a grand stage. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Homecoming: Surprise Return Kicks Off WWE Royal Rumble This weekend, WWE presented its annual Royal Rumble event. The show opened with the Men’s Royal Rumble match, which saw Gunther enter at #1 and set a new longevity record for the match. Gunther lasted 1:11:25, breaking Rey Mysterio’s record of 62:12 set in 2006. Commentary did make it clear that Gunther’s record was in traditional Royal Rumble matches, as Daniel Bryan lasted 74:12 in the Greatest Royal Rumble in 2018, though that match had 50 entrants compared to the traditional 30. Gunther finished as the match’s runner up to Cody Rhodes. Th..
So maybe not? We are in a very strange time for WWE as things are moving so fast that it is hard to keep track of everything. The difference this time is that it is at the very top of the promotion, with the future ownership being questioned. That has opened up a variety of options, but now it seems that one of the leading candidates may not be as close to control as expected. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WRESTLING RUMORS: When Vince McMahon Could Appear On WWE TV Again Earlier this week, a rumor circulated that WWE had been sold to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which planned to take the company private again. However, new reports from Ariel Helwani of BT Sports, Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics and Jon Alba of Fite TV say that they have heard nothing of such a sale. At the moment, WWE has yet to comment on the story, though the company has been rumored to look at a sale in recent days. Contrary to reports stating otherwise last night, there is no deal in place at this precise moment for ..
More than meets the eye. WWE runs a lot of television in any given week, with seven hours of national television between Monday Night Raw, NXT and SmackDown. That is a lot of material to cover and it means that WWE has its work cut out every time. Occasionally they have to mix things up a bit and that is what they did this week with a special editing trick to save themselves some time. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Ric Flair Teases Big Celebrity Involvement At WrestleMania 39 This week’s Monday Night Raw focused on SmackDown’s Bloodline stable appearing on the show and attacking various wrestlers. The show opened with Paul Heyman and Roman Reigns backstage, with the latter ordered the Bloodline to take people out. According to Fightful Select, Reigns was not present at this week’s Monday Night Raw, with his segment having been filmed separately and inserted into the show. Reigns has been there live more than once this year. Check out his taped appearance and some of his recent great..
Welcome back. There are all kinds of wrestlers on the AEW roster and it can be difficult to find something for all of them to do. AEW has quite the balancing act on its hands but some of the wrestlers often fall through the cracks. That can be true for a variety of reasons, including injuries. Now though, two recently injured stares are back and seem to be ready to go. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: She’s In: Interesting Story On How Britt Baker Brought Top Star Into AEW There were two returns this week on AEW Dynamite. The show opened with Jon Moxley talking about how no one was man enough to face him, which drew out Hangman Page for a brawl. This was Page’s first appearance since the October 18 edition of Dynamite when he was accidentally injured during a match with Moxley. Later in the show, Ruby Soho returned and attacked Tay Melo and Anna Jay. This was Soho’s first appearance since All Out, when she suffered a broken nose. These are some important people to have back. Check out who is ..
And she makes five. There are several ways to present a wrestler in a new way and some of them can be a lot of fun. One of the best ways is to have someone come back as a surprise after several weeks if not months away. Sometimes a star’s return is built up a long time in advance but others come out of nowhere. The latter was the situation this week in a special way. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WRESTLING RUMORS: WWE Considers First Time Opponent For Brock Lesnar At WrestleMania 39 This Saturday, WWE will present its annual Survivor Series event, which will be headlined by a pair of WarGames matches. The men’s match was entirely set last week on SmackDown, but the women’s match still had one more spot to fill coming into this week’s SmackDown. This week’s show opened with Team Belair introducing the returning Becky Lynch as its fifth member. Lynch has been out of action since Summerslam with a separated shoulder, suffered in a match against Belair. Just in case you’ve forgotten. Check out..
With Vince McMahon’s retirement and Triple H taking the creative reigns at WWE, there has been a dramatic shift in how many performers have been featured on WWE programming. With many notable talents returning to the company, Triple H has opened the rumor mill to many potential names who could make their return to WWE. Most recently, it’s been reported by the Wrestling Observer that Jonah, formerly known as Bronson Reed during his tenure with NXT and WWE, has been offered the opportunity to come back to WWE. There are also reports of Chelsea Green returning to the company as well. There’s also some smoke surrounding a return for Matt Cardona. That is never something you want to hear. There are all kinds of injuries and health issues that can cause serious problems for wrestlers. Some of them take place all at once, but there are others that are built up over time and last long into a wrestler’s retirement. Certain legends have opened up about their issues and now another is telling us what happened to him at an important point in his career. During a recent edition of his Foley Is Pod podcast, WWE Hall Of Famer Mick Foley talked about his return to WWE back in 2012. Around the time he was going back, Foley saw a doctor about his health issues. In addition to neurological issues, Foley had severe issues with his back. This included problems with five different discs, which have caused his spine to curve. The issue has caused Foley to be in pain and also to lose height. There is nothing to suggest that the problem can be solved through surgery or other means. Opinion: You could tell that Foley was in pain just by looking at..
Welcome back. There have been a lot of changes taking place in WWE in recent months and several of them have involved the wrestlers themselves. This has included wrestlers reverting to characters and personae they have used before, often in NXT. These changes have opened several new doors and now we saw another one at the end of Monday Night Raw, with quite the change. The main event of this week’s Monday Night Raw saw Bayley face Bianca Belair in a non-title match. Near the end of the match, an unidentified woman dove onto the rest of Bayley’s Damage Ctrl teammates, taking down the referee at the same time. The woman was then seen to be Nikki Cross, formerly Nikki Ash and no longer wearing her mask. Cross then DDTed Belair to give Bayley the win. Following the match, Ash attacked Bayley as well. Opinion: This is one of those changes that makes all the sense in the world and leaves you wondering what took WWE so long to make the move. Ash wasn’t working so switching back to Cross mak..
They have spots. AEW has changed the way the wrestling world works as there is now a second major promotion in the United States for wrestlers to go. That is something that has been lacking for a long time now and it has opened up several more spots. It means something when someone gets one of those places and now it seems two more of them have been taken. This week on AEW Rampage, it was announced that Willow Nightingale had officially signed a full time contract with the company. This included the customary All Elite graphic. According to Fightful Select, there are other names who have been working on full time deals with AEW without being officially announced, including Ari Daivari, who was signed at some point over the summer. Opinion: It was great to see Nightingale announced as officially being part of the roster. She has been one of the most consistently entertaining stars in AEW and it is nice to see her getting rewarded for the work and effort that she has put in. Daivari is..
He’s here. One of the biggest stories of the WWE year has been the return of several wrestlers who have worked for the company before. After a huge string of released over the last two years, a good many of the former names have come back to WWE. That has made for several interesting moments, but the biggest one might have taken place this weekend. The end of this weekend’s WWE Extreme Rules event saw the return of Bray Wyatt after a year and a half hiatus from the company. Wyatt returned at the end of the show, appearing in a real life version of the Firefly Fun House, with the Fun House characters showing up throughout the arena. The door to the Fun House opened and Wyatt appeared to end the show. This was the reveal of the White Rabbit, who had been advertised to appear at Extreme Rules. Yeah this worked. Check out Wyatt’s return: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: WWE didn’t exactly hide this one and that is not a bad..
They’re interested. AEW has opened a lot of doors for wrestlers to be able to appear on a national stage for the first time in their careers. While WWE had long since been the only major game in the industry, the number of spots has since gone way up. There have been some very talented names filling those spots and now AEW is making an attempt to pick up another one. The main event of this week’s edition of AEW Dynamite saw Bandido unsuccessfully challenge Chris Jericho for the Ring Of Honor World Title. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, AEW offered Bandido a full time contract based on his performance, though there is no word on if Bandido has signed the deal. Bandido is a former Ring Of Honor and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Champion. Opinion: The only reason I can think of for Bandido to not have been signed to a major promotion is that he doesn’t want to. He has more charisma and talent than most wrestlers on national rosters today and it would make all the sense i..
