REVIEW: WrestleMania 7: Stars And Stripes And More Stars

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Wrestlemania VII Date: March 24, 1991 Location: Los Angeles Sports Arena, Los Angeles, California Attendance: 16,158 Commentators: Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan It’s the Gulf War show, as Hulk Hogan is fighting to get the WWF Title back from former American hero turned Iraqi sympathizer Sgt. Slaughter. If that sounds like one of the worst ideas for a Wrestlemania main event ever, you have quite the memory for these things. Other than that we have Randy Savage vs. Ultimate Warrior in a match that actually belongs i..

REVIEW: Royal Rumble 1991: That’s Not Very Patriotic

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over ten years now and have reviewed over 5,000 shows. Royal Rumble 1991 Date: January 19, 1991 Location: Miami Arena, Miami, Florida Attendance: 16,000 Commentators: Gorilla Monsoon, Roddy Piper So it’s 1991 now and the US is at war (kind of). Therefore, the main event here, other than the Rumble of course, is Warrior defending the world title against Slaughter. This is a major changeover from the old Rumble formula which was a bunch of nothing matches followed by the big battle royal to close the show. Well at least on PPV that is. This would become the norm after this..

REVIEW: Royal Rumble 1992: Fair To Flair

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Royal Rumble 1992 Date: January 19, 1992 Location: Knickerbocker Arena, Albany, New York Attendance: 17,000 Commentators: Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan It’s time to get back to one of the classics as this one comes up on the request list pretty regularly. Since this is going to be my fourth time looking at it, odds are this is going to be the last time I look at it for a very good while. You probably know the big attraction by heart at this point and that should be more than enough to carry the whole thing. Let’s ..

WWF House Show Date: December 29, 1991 Location: Madison Square Garden Attendance: 11,000 Commentators: Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan Just a random house show that I found so I figured I’d throw it on here. This is from 24/7 so it might be cut. An hour and 48 minutes for a house sho..

REVIEW: Survivor Series 1990: Here’s An Important One

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over ten years now and have reviewed over 5,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net, starting today. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Survivor Series 1990 Date: November 22, 1990 Location: Hartford Civic Center, Hartford, Connecticut Attendance: 16,000 Commentators: Gorilla Monsoon, Roddy Piper This is a somewhat different show that in recent years as we have a main event of sorts. It was never tried again and that’s probably the best idea. It’s called the Grand Finale Match of Survival in which the survivors of each team meet in one final Survivor Series match. The winners get absolutely nothing, which continues to prove that these..

REVIEW: WWF WrestleFest 1993: They Know What They’re Doing Right?

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? WrestleFest 1993 Hosts: Gene Okerlund, Bobby Heenan Commentators: Sean Mooney, Lord Alfred Hayes, Gorilla Monsoon, Vince McMahon, Bobby Heenan It’s back to Coliseum Video and in this case we’re jumping to one of the weaker times the company has had. The good thing is that these tapes almost always have something worth seeing and there is always a hope that we could see the same thing here. There is no major theme here most of the time and that makes things more fun. Let’s get to it. Opening sequence, featuring va..

REVIEW: King Of The Ring 1994: The Owen Hart Tournament

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? King of the Ring 1994 Date: June 19, 1994 Location: Baltimore Arena, Baltimore, Maryland Attendance: 12,000 Commentators: Gorilla Monsoon, Randy Savage, Art Donovan It’s tournament time and that means it’s not likely to be the most interesting show in the world. On top of that, this is one of the weaker fields they’ve ever had, which makes for a rather dull few hours. Finally, this show is infamous for the commentary, which really was a disaster and a horrible idea. Let’s get to it. Earlier today, Jeff Jarrett ca..

REVIEW: WrestleMania 8: Double Double

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Wrestlemania VIII Date: April 5, 1992 Location: Hoosier Dome, Indianapolis, Indiana Attendance: 62,167 Commentators: Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan This was one of the names mentioned for a possible redo so I’ll throw it in as a bonus. On his podcast, Bruce Prichard mentioned this as one of the worst Wrestlemanias ever and I’m really not sure why. The show features a double main event with Ric Flair defending the WWF World Title against Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan’s possible retirement match against Sid Justice. Le..

REVIEW: Prime Time Wrestling – June 17, 1987: The Show Of Its Time

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Prime Time Wrestling Date: June 17, 1987 Hosts: Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan Commentators: Dick Graham, Lord Alfred Hayes, Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan, Vince McMahon, Gorilla Monsoon, Bruno Sammartino Oh boy it’s Prime Time. This was one of the big shows from the WWF, as it featured various matches from major house shows. That might not sound like much, but at the time, this was a pretty awesome deal. What makes it better is Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan as the hosts, giving us the legendary banter that made..

REVIEW: Survivor Series 1994: Make Your Own Jokes

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Survivor Series 1994 Date: November 23, 1994 Location: Freeman Coliseum, San Antonio, Texas Attendance: 10,000 Commentators: Vince McMahon, Gorilla Monsoon We’re rapidly approaching a new era in the WWF but we aren’t quite there yet. The main event tonight is Yokozuna vs. Undertaker in their second casket match of the year with Chuck Norris, yes that Chuck Norris, as the special outside enforcer. Other than that we’ve got Bret defending the title against the now insane Bob Backlund in a submission match. There are..

REVIEW: WWF WrestleFest 1990: The Time Capsule

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? WrestleFest 1990 Host: Sean Mooney Commentators: Sean Mooney, Lord Alfred Hayes, Gorilla Monsoon, Hillbilly Jim, Tony Schiavone This is the kind of thing that I love to watch: a compilation video featuring a bunch of stuff from television tapings which is cobbled together with almost nothing in the way of a theme. There might be a wrestler getting a few matches in a row, but this is kind of a sampler platter of the company at this point in time. Let’s get to it. Sean Mooney welcomes us to the show and runs down t..

REVIEW: Summerslam Spectacular 1993: That’s Some False Advertising

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Summerslam Spectacular 1993 Date: August 22, 1993 Location: Mid-Hudson Civic Center, Poughkeepsie, New York Attendance: 3,000 Commentators: Jim Ross, Gorilla Monsoon This is a special used to hype up Summerslam and since the 1993 edition is the kind of show that needs all the help it can get. The big match here is the Steiner Brothers defending the Tag Team Titles against Money Inc. inside a cage, which has a good bit of potential. Let’s get to it. Jim Ross welcomes us to the show and runs down the card. Yokozun..

The Big Event Date: August 28, 1986 Location: Exhibition Stadium, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Attendance: 70,000 Commentators: Gorilla Monsoon, Johnny Valiant, Ernie Ladd Yes that’s the correct attendance. As in exactly. Not rounded off a bit. Like I said, this is one heck of a huge crowd and they’re all standing outside to watch Hulk Hogan vs. Paul Orndorff in a major grudge match for the title. The only other match worth anything on the show is a Snake Pit match (meaning anything goes) between Jake Roberts and Ricky S..

REVIEW: WWF Los Angeles Live Event – August 13, 1988: Golden Era Goodness

WWF House Show Date: August 13, 1988 Location: Los Angeles Sports Arena, Los Angeles, California Commentators: Gorilla Monsoon, Superstar Billy Graham It’s another show that was recently added to the Network and it’s from my favorite era so let’s take a look. Randy Savage is the World Champion here and defending against Andre the Giant while Hulk Hogan is taking a bit of a break. We’re also coming up on Summerslam so you can expect to hear quite a bit about the show. Let’s get to it. The announcers t..

Video: Top Five Champion vs. Champion Matches

This is what it’s all about – Gorilla Monsoon. Titles and champions are what drive wrestling companies. More often than not, wrestlers get in the ring and face off for the right to become champions. The personal issues and drama are there too, but they often tie into the title matches. But what happens when two people have a title of their own? Well in honor of the upcoming slate of champion vs. champion matches at Survivor Series, WWE is looking back at some of the better ones. [This post contains video, click to play] On its Instagram page, WWE has released a new video looking at the Top Five Champion vs. Champion matches in history. The list includes both singles and tag team matches with a wide history of matches included. Only three of the matches were actually for titles, with two of them only being for bragging rights. Two matches include the final match in the titles’ histories. Opinion: I’m not exactly a fan of this kind of a match but it seems to be the kind of thing that ..

Update on Vader’s Medical Condition; How Did Open Heart Surgery Go?

It had been previously reported that WWE legend Vader recently underwent open heart surgery in Dallas, TX. He has always been known as a monster in the ring, making a huge statement during his debut on “Raw” in 1996, when he attacked then WWE president, Gorilla Monsoon. You can see that clip below: [This post contains video, click to play] His son tweeted the following message from his dad’s Twitter account, indicating that the surgery was a success, but the recovery will be a long one: This is his son Jesse. I wanted to let everybody know that I just spoke to the Surgeon. The surgery was a success but it was worse than we had expected. Long road for recovery. Will keep you posted. Thank you for the prayers. — Big Van Vader (@itsvadertime) March 26, 2018 Vader was last seen on WWE programming in 2012, when he defeated Heath Slater in a singles match on “Raw.” During the 1000th episode of the show, Vader and a number of other legends dismantled Slater. In 2016, he inducted Stan ..

Wrestlemania IX Review: Why Would Fuji Do That?

Wrestlemania IX Date: April 4, 1993 Location: Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada Attendance: 16,891 Commentators: Jim Ross, Bobby Heenan, Randy Savage This is one of the weakest cards the series has ever seen. Nothing on the show feels important with the main event of Bret Hart defending the WWF World Title against Royal Rumble winner Yokozuna feeling lukewarm at best. The second biggest match is Hulk Hogan/Brutus Beefcake challenging Money Inc. for the Tag Team Titles. Like I said: not the strongest card. Let’s get to it. Gorilla Monsoon is the host this year, meaning he’ll be on screen for less than five minutes. Like everyone else, Monsoon is in a toga because it’s a toga party. I’m still not sure who thought this was a good idea. In one of the major moments of the show, Jim Ross (JR) makes his WWF debut and talks about the main events before taking his place as lead commentator. I really could have gone through life without ever seeing him in a toga. Finkus Maximus (just go with..
