REVIEW: Great Balls Of Fire: Mediocre Gracious

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over ten years now and have reviewed over 5,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Great Balls of Fire Date: July 9, 2017 Location: American Airlines Center, Dallas, Texas Commentators: Michael Cole, Booker T., Corey Graves It’s time for the most oddly named pay per view in a long time and yes they’re actually going to call it this. Brock Lesnar is getting back in the ring for the first time since Wrestlemania to defend the Universal Title against Samoa Joe. This has the potential to be a war and that’s what the title needs. Let’s get to it. Kickoff Show: Cruiserweight Title: Neville vs. Akira Toz..

Jeff Hardy Makes His Return To WWE Raw

Jeff Hardy is back on WWE television after missing several months with a shoulder injury. Former WWE Champion Jeff Hardy returned to WWE Raw on the April 9 edition, inserting himself into the WWE Intercontinental Title picture. He came to the aid of both Seth Rollins and Finn Balor, who were outnumbered by The Miztourage during an in-ring segment. Hardy was sidelined back in September, after sustaining an injury at the July Great Balls of Fire Iron Man tag team match. Since then, his brother Matt has been "woken" and embroiled in a feud with Bray Wyatt. It would appear based on the booking of the last two nights, Jeff and Matt are headed their separate ways on WWE TV. Hardy himself is a four-time Intercontinental champion, and quietly among the most decorated pro wrestlers in history, also winning the WWE, World Heavyweight, Hardcore, European, Light Heavyweight, TNA World Heavyweight championships, and winning tag team titles for WWE, Raw, WCW, Ring of Honor and TNA. Why Brock Lesnar Must Become A Free Agent

Rumours have been circulating this week that Brock Lesnar will return to UFC. There is also an accompanying rumour that Lesnar will not resign his contract after Wrestlemania 34. Even if these are simply rumours WWE and Vince McMahon must be scared. Lesnar is sports entertainment’s biggest draw bar none. He is a mega star and a huge asset to the company. However, his career is winding down and there is still infinite value in Lesnar over the next year or two. His value will be used best though if he becomes a free agent and here’s why.

More Dream Matches

Samoa Joe vs Brock Lesnar was a legitimate dream match. WWE capitalised on this feud and booked it perfectly from Extreme Rules all the way to Great Balls of Fire. This feud proved Joe to be a superstar and also that Brock Lesnar dream feuds are a necessity. Dream matches with Brock Lesnar create superstars. They give wrestlers a career defining match as well fans exactly what they are desperate for.

That said, there are not that many dream feuds left for Lesnar on RAW. The only real one is Finn Balor which is as dream worthy as Samoa Joe was. Behind Balor is – at a stretch of the word dream – Bray Wyatt and even Braun Strowman. These feuds must happen in Lesnar’s time left in WWE without a doubt, particularly with Balor. On Smackdown Live however there are more. Three legitimate dream matches face Lesnar on Smackdown Live. Kevin Owens, AJ Styles and of course there is also Shinsuke Nakamura. On a smaller level there is also stars like Corbin and Zayn who would likely be excellent opponents for Lesnar.

Heyman can simply announce the Beast Incarnate will do what he wants and go where he wants. This opens the door for so many feuds and matches that WWE must capitalise on. Especially now that Lesnar is likely in the very end of his WWE career. With Lesnar fighting only a limited number of times a year, now is the time to do this. If not for the wrestlers opposite Lesnar, then for us the fans.

The Taz Show Recap – NXT Analysis, Kurt Angle Documentary, Where Does Strowman Go From Here? More!

Blocks 1 & 2:

Taz opens today’s show by speaking about the second of four straight press conferences, promoting the upcoming boxing match between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather. He calls these press conferences riveting entertainment, but if they continue to do the exact same thing it’s going to get old rather quickly. He believes that these two are going to have to get physical at the last press conference, just to give the fans something to hold onto as they build towards the fight in August.

A listener calls into the show and says that he wishes WWE would just turn Roman Reigns heel, and he believes that even Reigns wants to turn heel at this point. Taz agrees with the caller, and says that for the longest time he thought Reigns was determined to get over as a babyface, but as of late it sure seems like Reigns has embraced the heel overtones of his character.

Taz wonders if we’ve seen the last of Braun Strowman vs. Roman Reigns, because if WWE wanted to keep Strowman off television for a while they wouldn’t have shown him walking out of ambulance at Great Balls of Fire. The caller says that he has heard rumours that WWE if preparing for a Fatal 4-way match at SummerSlam for Universal Title between Strowman, Reigns, Samoa Joe and Brock Lesnar. Taz says he’ll be surprised if that happens.

Taz expects we’ll see Strowman back on RAW by next Monday, and then we should get some answers as to where WWE is heading with him creatively moving forward.

The Ross Report Recap w/ Lita & Madusa – Great Balls of Fire Analysis, Strowman is WWE’s ‘Next Big Thing’, Mae Young Classic, More!

Ross thought that Samoa Joe and Brock Lesnar had a great match at last Sunday’s Great Balls of Fire event. He thought the match was believable at every turn, and Joe actually had the majority of the offence during the bout. He liked the story that both men told, and he didn’t have a problem with the finish of the match at all.

Some fans were aggravated by the fact that it only took one F5 to defeat Joe, and this is a tale of the times in Ross’ opinion. Fans have become accustomed to wrestlers kicking out of each other’s finishing moves, and he thinks that’s a problem for the wrestling business. A wrestler’s ‘finisher’ is supposed to ‘finish’ the match, and he believes that apart from big events like WrestleMania, finishing moves should be protected.

He admits that the outcome of the match was somewhat predictable with Lesnar winning but he thinks there will be a rematch at some point down the road, maybe as soon as SummerSlam if Joe is able to defeat Roman Reigns on RAW next week.

Ross thinks that Braun Strowman has a chance to be the ‘next big thing’ in WWE. After seeing Strowman walk away from that crash at Great Balls of Fire, Ross feels it’s hard to root against him, even if he’s supposed to be a heel. Strowman is a powerful, believable character who Ross thinks fans can get behind. He says that Strowman is the type of performer that you build a company around.

The Taz Show Recap – RAW Analysis, Universal Title Segment Steals the Show, Are The Hardys About to Break? More!

Block 1:

Taz says he really enjoyed one segment from last night’s episode of Monday Night RAW in particular, and that was the segment featuring Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe. He says that this felt very real, and there was some extreme intensity between Joe and Lesnar in particular. Taz could tell that these guys were simply working from bullet points, and that made their promos feel more believable.

Taz thinks that this segment had Paul Heyman’s fingerprints all over it, and he thought all parties involved did a very good job. In addition, after almost getting the best of Brock Lesnar at Great Balls of Fire, Taz is glad that WWE didn’t just take Joe out of the main event picture right away without any explanation. Taz doesn’t think that Joe will defeat Reigns next week, but it’s good that he’s still involved in the Title picture.

Taz liked the majority of Big Cass’ promo which opened RAW last night. He says that at certain points in the promo Cass looked lost, but that’s going to happen when a lot of these younger talents are learning on the fly. We’ll probably see more and more of this as performers are basically starting their careers in WWE now, instead of honing their craft in the territories like they did years ago.

Overall, he thought that Cass spoke a lot of truth in his promo. Cass said that he’s going to be a star in WWE and will eventually be WWE Champion. Taz says he believes every word of that, and it’s only a matter of time before Cass skyrockets up the card, because it’s evident that WWE is firmly behind pushing him right now.

Brock Lesnar’s Reaction to Samoa Joe’s Performance at WWE Great Balls of Fire

Brock Lesnar was reportedly very impressed with how his match against Samoa Joe at Sunday’s WWE Great Balls of Fire turned out.

Fightful.com reports that Lesnar was apparently “extremely happy” with Samoa Joe’s performance in the match. It’s being said that Lesnar was “particularly thrilled that Joe was able to keep up with his physical style and was able to give it back.”

It will be interesting to see if we get to see them go one-on-one again in the near future. Samoa Joe will have the opportunity if he can defeat Roman Reigns on RAW next week.

WWE 205 Live Results – July 11 2017

Welcome to the fastest hour on television, 205 Live!

Tonight’s show features a huge match that aims to settle a very long running feud. Cedric Alexander will battle Noam Dar in an I Quit Match that will likely serve as tonight’s main event.

At Great Balls of Fire, Neville defeated Akira Tozawa to retain the Cruiserweight Championship. The two had a great match that was unfortunately relegated to the kick-off show. Last night on Raw, Neville was pinned by Akira Tozawa in tag team action. The pinfall gives Tozawa a claim to get a rematch against the King for the Cruiserweight Championship, which will likely take place at SummerSlam!

That’s the preview for tonight’s show, which will probably feature more than those two stories. Let us know what you’re excited to see by downloading the Ringside Talk app or the Ringside News app, both of which are free! Enjoy the show!

Storyline Update on Braun Strowman’s Medical Condition

WWE provided the following storyline update on Braun Strowman’s medical condition coming out of Monday’s episode of RAW:

While Raw General Manager Kurt Angle provided an update on Braun Strowman’s condition following the post-Ambulance Match attack from Roman Reigns at WWE Great Balls of Fire, WWE.com has obtained additional details on The Monster Among Men’s condition.

While Strowman miraculously walked out of Dallas under his own power after refusing medical attention, WWE.com can confirm that he is currently in the care of his personal physician and will not disclose the nature of his injuries at this time. Also, per Angle’s office, if and when Strowman is cleared to compete again, there will be a public announcement confirming his status.

WWE Monday Night Raw Results – July 10 2017

Welcome to Monday Night Raw, one night removed from the first-ever Great Balls of Fire PPV!

The biggest talking-point coming out of Great Balls of Fire last night was the massive segment between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman. Braun won the ambulance match after Roman went for a spear and missed, sending him flying into the back of the ambulance allowing Strowman to close the doors. Roman immediately burst out of the ambulance and threw Braun inside, then proceeded to drive the ambulance into the parking lot and ram it into a production truck. Roman pretty much tried to kill Braun and walked away. Paramedics and firemen arrived and opened the ambulance up, allowing Braun to emerge bloody and beaten, but walk away under his own power. It was an incredible sight that would have been right at home in the Attitude Era. Braun looked like an absolute monster, and so did Roman…for the wrong reasons. Roman was undeniably heelish and the announcers played on this, so Roman will surely have to answer to Kurt Angle tonight.

In the main event of last night’s show, Brock Lesnar defeated Samoa Joe after being beat down for the better part of the match. Joe attacked Brock before the bell even rung and smashed him through the announce table. Joe then had the majority of offence throughout the match until Lesnar caught him with an F5 and took home the gold. It was a really good match that never quite reached 5th gear. Word is that we will get a number one contender match tonight between Joe and Roman, leading to a match with Brock at SummerSlam. I think it’s fair to say Joe would be the deserving and preferable winner for most fans.

Alexa Bliss also retained her Women’s Championship against Sasha Banks last night, in a match in which she dislocated her own elbow to get a cheap shot on Sasha. In the end, Sasha won the match via count-out, allowing Alexa to retain. This certainly allows the feud to continue, seemingly into SummerSlam, where maybe Nia Jax will be inserted. There’s a lot of directions the women’s division could head in right now and it’s pretty cool.

The Miz also retained his Intercontinental Championship last night against Dean Ambrose once again. Surely this feud is over now, it’s gone on well past its peak and I think interest is pretty much non-existent. The Miz will hopefully move on to a new opponent for SummerSlam, maybe Finn Balor. Speaking of moving on, Sheamus & Cesaro beat The Hardy Boyz again in an Iron Man match last night. This has been a great feud but it’s expiration date arrived last night and it’s time for both teams to move on.

There’s a lot to be excited about for tonight’s Raw as we start our trek towards SummerSlam! Let us know your thoughts or feelings on our Ringside Talk app, or on the Ringside News app! Enjoy the show!

Segment Announced for Tonight’s RAW

With just an hour away until RAW goes live, WWE announced that Kurt Angle will give an update on the condition of Braun Strowman on tonight’s show.

It was also announced that Angle will be congratulating Brock Lesnar for his victory over Samoa Joe at Sunday’s WWE Great Balls of Fire event.

Check back here at 8PM ET for our live play-by-play coverage of the show.

Note: Our Facebook pages have been hacked. The Big Dog Has Been Unleashed — Now Turn Him Heel

There’s no greater feeling than getting to see something you’ve been waiting a long time for. In the wrestling world, there are few events that get every single person talking. We saw one of those moments transpire in front of our eyes last night. It wasn’t for the faint at heart.

At Great Balls of Fire, Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman battled in a brutal Ambulance Match. Both men really did a number on each other, which is going to happen when you hate each other as much as these men did. The one mistake Reigns made was the high jumping spear. Braun moved out of the way and Reigns flew straight into the ambulance, allowing Strowman to secure the victory. As Braun looked to celebrate the victory, Reigns had other plans.

Getting a burst of energy from who knows where, Roman proceeded to flying out of the ambulance and unleashing a spear on the monster. After connecting with the finisher, Roman throws Braun into the back of the ambulance and drives to the parking lot. Roman contemplates his next move, then goes in for the attack. He throws it into reverse and drives full speed into the back of a trailer. First Roman attacked Braun after the match, then this? Roman hobbles out the ambulance, looking back at the disaster he has caused. Everyone is freaking out at this point, trying to get Braun out of the ambulance. Roman could not care less how Braun was doing. It was evil, it was diabolical, it was sheer genius.

It was a sick and twisted side that’s yet to be seen.

The Taz Show Recap – Great Balls Analysis, A.J. Styles Wins Gold, Reigns Attempts Murder, More!

Block 1:

Taz says he was shocked to hear that Austin Aries was released by WWE over the weekend. Aries is a great talker who takes great care of himself and is a terrific worker in the ring, so it’s too bad that things didn’t work out for him in WWE. He’s sure that Aries will apply his craft elsewhere in the very near future, such as Japan or in ROH.

He was also surprised to hear that A.J. Styles defeated Kevin Owens to claim the United States Title at the Madison Square Garden house show over the weekend. He likes that WWE did this, because it keeps fans guessing at live events. Switching a Title at a house show from time to time ensures fans that anything can happen at any WWE event. He’s sure that those two guys tore the house down in that match, and he’s happy for Styles.

Taz gets into his analysis of last night’s Great Balls of Fire PPV.

Taz was surprised to see Seth Rollins and Bray Wyatt open the show last night. There’s nothing wrong with guys with star power opening the show like that, but Taz would have preferred if Sasha Banks and Alexa Bliss opened the show. Nonetheless, Wyatt picked up a much needed win in what was a fine opening bout.

Heath Slater & Curt Hawkins React to Impromptu Match at Great Balls of Fire

As seen on Sunday’s WWE Great Balls of Fire event, Heath Slater and Curt Hawkins were added in an impromptu match while Dallas Fire & Rescue used Jaws of Life to free Braun Strowman from the ambulance wreck that was cause by Roman Reigns.

Both Slater and Hawkins took to their Twitter accounts to react to the match:

Last Minute Shift In Betting Odds for Tonight’s WWE Great Balls of Fire

Heading into tonight’s WWE Great Balls of Fire event, Bray Wyatt is now the favorite in the betting odds to win his match against Seth Rollins. Here is the updated odds, courtesy of PaddyPower.com:

Brock Lesnar 1/25 (favorite)
Samoa Joe 17/2

Braun Strowman 1/10 (favorite)
Roman Reigns 5/1

Bray Wyatt 1/10 (favorite)
Seth Rollins 15/2

Big Cass 1/14 (favorite)
Enzo Amore 11/2

Alexa Bliss 1/25 (favorite)
Sasha Banks 9/1

Cesaro & Sheamus 1/25 (favorite)
Matt & Jeff Hardy 15/2

The Miz 1/14 (favorite)
Dean Ambrose 11/2

Note: Our Facebook pages have been hacked. WWE Great Balls of Fire Results – July 9 2017

Welcome to the first-ever Great Balls of Fire pay-per-view!

Tonight’s inaugural PPV will host a dream match between Samoa Joe and Brock Lesnar for the WWE Universal Championship! This is a match people thought they would never see but here we are, and the build has been better than a lot of recent Lesnar matches. If WWE ever saw this as a throwaway match to keep Brock busy, that all changed when Samoa Joe grabbed the microphone. Over the past 4-5 weeks, Samoa Joe has turned many heads with his incredible intensity and mic skills, which anyone will recognise if they watched his early TNA and ROH work. Joe is one of the best in the world and he more than deserves this match, and WWE has no doubt recognised his incredible work. It’s hard to know what to expect from the actual match tonight but it has the potential to be an all-time classic.

The other main-event worthy match for tonight is the Ambulance Match between Braun Strowman and Roman Reigns. Braun returned from injury several months early and resumed his tyranny on Raw and Roman Reigns in particular. The two went right back to beating the crap out of each other and tonight we have a number one contender’s match between them in which the stipulation is, ironically, to send your opponent to the hospital. This is kind of a dumb match because it’s supposedly barbaric but you’re sending your opponent to get medical attention; it’s like a Last Man Standing match but with more care and concern for the other guys well-being. Anyway, I expect this to be a fun spot-fest that Braun should win.

Also on tonight’s card, The Hardy Boyz challenge Sheamus & Cesaro in a 30-minute Iron Man match, which should serve as the end to this long-running feud. These two teams have never failed to deliver inside the ring but fans never seem overly excited with the feud. Personally I expect this match to be fantastic and really get the crowd going. Elsewhere, Alexa Bliss defends her title against Sasha Banks in a surprising turn. It seemed obvious that Nia Jax was on her way to facing Alexa for the belt – the story-line was writing itself – but for some reason WWE decided to go with Sasha Banks instead. It might not have the story behind it but these two could have a really good match; Bliss isn’t on Banks’ level of in-ring ability but she’s no slouch either. Regardless, I would expect a screwy finish that allows Alexa to retain the feud to continue!

Seth Rollins battles Bray Wyatt, Neville puts his Cruiserweight Championship on the line against Akira Tozawa, Enzo Amore faces his former brother Colin Cassidy, and Dean Ambrose looks to take back the Intercontinental Championship from The Miz and his entourage. That’s a stacked card that has the potential to be the red-brand’s best of the year so far. Don’t forget to check out the Ringside News and Ringside Talk apps, where you can chat about tonight’s PPV on a dedicated social platform with all the other marks like me! Enjoy the show!

Main Event Plans for This Year’s SummerSlam

While the current betting odds favor Braun Strowman to defeat Roman Reigns at tonight’s WWE Great Balls of Fire event, Dave Meltzer claimed on Wrestling Observer Radio that the plan is still for Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar at this year’s SummerSlam event.

As previously reported, original plans called for Reigns to walk out of WrestleMania 34 as WWE Universal Champion, however WWE made a decision to move the match to SummerSlam instead. These plans were changed sometime around the time Braun Strowman returned to WWE programming.

Note: Our Facebook pages have been hacked. Huge Shift In Betting Odds for WWE Great Balls of Fire

Smart Money bets appear to be coming in for Sunday’s WWE Great Balls of Fire event as several matches have seen shifts in the odds.

Roman Reigns, who was a slight favorite against Braun Strowman, is now the underdog in his match at the event. Also, The Hardys are now heavy underdogs against Shesaro after being the favorites. Seth Rollins is now a favorite against Bray Wyatt.

Here is the updated odds courtesy of PaddyPower:
Brock Lesnar 1/25 (favorite)
Samoa Joe 17/2 Braun Strowman 1/8 (favorite)
Roman Reigns 9/2 Seth Rollins 1/7 (favorite)
Bray Wyatt 4/1 Big Cass 1/14 (favorite)
Enzo Amore 11/2 Alexa Bliss 1/18 (favorite)
Sasha Banks 6/1 Cesaro & Sheamus 1/25 (favorite)
Matt & Jeff Hardy 15/2 The Miz 1/14 (favorite)
It’s expected that there will be more changes as we get close to the event.

Favorites to Win at WWE Great Balls of Fire

Here are the current betting odds for the upcoming WWE Great Balls of Fire event, which will most-likely change several times between now and Sunday.

WWE Universal Championship: Brock Lesnar(c) -1667 (favorite) vs Samoa Joe +700

RAW Women’s Championship: Alexa Bliss(c) -278 (favorite) vs Sasha Banks +170

Intercontinental Championship: The Miz(c) -278 (favorite) vs Dean Ambrose +170

RAW Tag Team Championship: Cesaro and Sheamus(c) +125 vs Matt and Jeff Hardy -189 (favorites)

Ambulance Match: Roman Reigns -137 (favorite) vs Braun Strowman +100

Seth Rollins +125 vs Bray Wyatt -175 (favorite)

Enzo Amore +175 vs Big Cass -250 (favorite)
