There he is again. There are all kinds of reasons for wrestlers to take some time away from the ring, some of which have nothing to do with someone being unable to wrestle. Sometimes the departures are merely ways to advance a storyline and set up something down the road. That was the case this week, when a wrestler returned after a two month hiatus to set up a showdown. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Bray Wyatt Sets His Sights On Some Huge Targets The main event of this week’s edition of AEW Rampage saw Dustin Rhodes defeat Swerve Strickland via DQ when Parker Boudreaux attacked Rhodes. After the match, Keith Lee made his return to save Rhodes and end the show. This was the first time that Lee had appeared since December, when Strickland and Mogul Affiliates had crushed a cinder block over Lee’s chest. Lee also appeared clean shaven and his hair was gray instead of black. It was a big deal. Check out Lee’s return, plus what is back: [This post contains video, click to play] [This..
That’s a relief. There are all kinds of reasons for a wrestler to miss time from television and some of them are more serious than others. One of the worst reasons is an injury of some kind, as you do not know when they are going to be back. On the other hand, there are times when a wrestler is out of action due to a storyline injury, which means the return should be a lot faster. Thankfully the latter is the case in a current situation. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Almost Time: Samoa Joe Opens Up About Possible Retirement From Wrestling On the December 21, 2022 edition of AEW Dynamite, Swerve Strickland and Mogul Affiliates attacked Keith Lee, including Strickland hitting a top rope double stomp to crush a cinder block over Lee’s chest. Lee has not been see on AEW television since the attack. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Lee’s absence is only due to the storyline injury and he is expected back soon to feud with Strickland. Lee is a star. Check out what he can do in AEW..
NXT Date: January 31, 2023 Location: Capitol Wrestling Center, Orlando, Florida Commentators: Vic Joseph, Booker T. It’s the go home show for Vengeance Day and that means it is time for the hard sell, which is one of the things NXT tends to do best. In addition to the build towards the show, we also have the long awaited Creed Brothers vs. Indus Sher match, which has been postponed at least once before. Let’s get to it. Indus Sher vs. Creed Brothers Jinder Mahal and Ivy Nile are here too. Julius and Veer slug it out to start with neither getting anywhere. Brutus comes in to slug away at Sanga in the corner but Sanga takes over with the power. It’s back to Julius, who gets dropped throat first onto the top rope to put him in trouble as well. A reverse Beverly Bomb crushes Julius again and we hit the chinlock. Julius fights up and manages to get over to Brutus for the hot tag. Everything breaks down and Julius muscles Veer up for a powerbomb. The sliding lariat is broken up by Mahal t..
They have a plan for that. WWE is a company that makes a lot of money in a lot of ways, but there are a few revenue streams that crush just about anything else. One of the most important is the company’s deal with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which brings a fortune in to WWE for a pair of annual shows. WWE occasionally does more than this, and now we know a bit more about the next show. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: WATCH: Clip From Attitude Era WWF Live Event Featuring All-Star Lineup According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE’s next Saudi Arabian show will take place in May. There are currently no details on known regarding a show name or theme. This would be WWE’s first event in the Kingdom in May, as the events have recently been run in February and then again in the fall. WWE’s most recent event, Crown Jewel 2022, took place on November 5. WWE has done a lot in Saudi Arabia. Check out some of what they have done in the country over the years: [This post contains video, click..
It might be a bit. We are closing in on the end of the year and in WWE, that means it is time to start the Road To WrestleMania. Next year, the biggest event of the year will take place near Hollywood, California and that means WWE is going to want to bring out even more top names than usual. It just turns out that one of them might not be available due to other commitments. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Awkward Confession: Sasha Banks Revealed Childhood Crush On Current SmackDown Star According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, John Cena may not be available for next year’s WrestleMania 39 due to a film shoot. Cena is set to be in Australia during February and March, filming a comedy called Ricky Stanicky. While Cena could still make WrestleMania on April 1 and 2, he would not likely be around for television to build any potential match. Cena is currently scheduled for the December 30 SmackDown in Tampa, Florida Cena does have a WrestleMania history. Check out what he has done at the ..
That could make things awkward. Wrestling has changed quite a bit in the last few decades, as WWE has allowed wrestlers to stay in one place for a lot longer than they might have back in the territory days. That means wrestlers are going to be seen for a good while, which in this case led to a rather unique situation between two wrestlers, one of whom is a good bit older. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Double Trouble: Roman Reigns And Drew McIntyre Suffer Same Injury In Same Match According to the Sportster, Sasha Banks was interviewed by MTV’s Total Request Live in 2018 and revealed that when she was a child, she had a crush on SmackDown’s Sheamus. Banks, 14 years younger than Sheamus, said that she thought Sheamus was cute when she was a child. Sheamus is currently a SmackDown star while Banks has been absent from WWE since walking out on the company in May. This could have been an interesting pair. Check out the two in action: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post conta..
Art imitates life. There are all kinds of ways to present a wrestling storyline, but one of the most effective is to have something based in real life. It adds a different dimension to the story and that is something that you cannot manufacture most of the time. WWE does this on occasion and they seem to be doing it again with a storyline involving a pair of wrestlers on the same show. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Emma Opens Up About WWE Return After Five Year Absence This week on SmackDown, Emma congratulated Shotzi about becoming #1 contender to the SmackDown Women’s Title. Emma also asked if Shotzi had seen Madcap Moss, which made Shotzi believe Emma had a crush on him. This would suggest that WWE is hinting at a romance angle between Emma and Moss, who announced that they are a real life couple back in August. There is some interest there. Check out what Emma and Shotzi had to say, plus some bad things happening to Shotzi: [This post contains video, click to play] Opinion: This is ..
That could be a long one. There are all kinds of ways to write a wrestler off the shelf for more than a little while. One of the easiest ways is to have a wrestler suffer a storyline injury, which can get rid of a wrestler for about as long as you need. That was the situation this week as a SmackDown star was written off of television for what seems to be a pretty long time. The opening match of this week’s SmackDown saw Solo Sikoa defeat Sheamus. Following the match, the Usos helped Sikoa crush Sheamus’ arm and elbow with a series of chair shots. During the show, commentary announced that Sheamus was taken to a hospital. After the show was over, WWE sent out a tweet, announcing that Sheamus has suffered a non-displaced fracture near his elbow. There is no word on when Sheamus will be returning to the ring. BREAKING: Due to the attack earlier tonight by #TheBloodline, @WWESheamus has a non-displaced fracture near his elbow and is still under observation. #SmackDown — WWE (@WWE) Octo..
There was something in mind. WWE runs a lot of different angles on television in any given year. Some of them are more memorable than others and you will occasionally see one that sticks out for years. That might not always be a good thing though and now we know the original plans behind one of the more infamously strange stories that the company has presented in recent memory. Back in November 2019, Erick Rowan began carrying a cage to the ring with him but no one could see what was inside. Over the next several months, whatever was in the cage proceeded to bite several people, including Rowan himself. The creature was eventually revealed to be a large spider, which was then crushed a week later. During a new interview with the 10 Count podcast, Rowan revealed that Seth Rollins told him the original plan called for the creature to be a pet rat. Rowan liked the idea as he felt it tied into his previous story where he tried to kill Roman Reigns. There is no word on why WWE changed plan..
NXT Date: August 9, 2022 Location: Capitol Wrestling Center, Orlando, Florida Commentators: Vic Joseph, Wade Barrett We’re a week away from Heatwave and that means we need to get in the final push towards the show. In this case that means a few grudge matches, plus One Final Accord between Santos Escobar and Tony D’Angelo. Other than that, we have a bit of a twist with a rounds match between Wes Lee and Trick Williams. Let’s get to it. We open with a recap of Kayden Carter/Katana Chance winning the Women’s Tag Team Titles last week. We get some rapid fire interviews from people wrestling tonight, including Trick Williams, Wes Lee, Cora Jade, Zoey Stark and Tony D’Angelo. Nikkita Lyons vs. Kiana James Before the bell, we get a quick promo from Lyons and Zoey Stark, who are ready to win the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles. James fights out of an early suplex attempt and cranks on the arm. That’s switched to the knee, which is crushed in the corner before James takes her to the floor for ..
That could be some time off. There are a lot of very talented wrestlers in the world today and you will see a lot of them on WWE television. While there are some problems with the presentation at times, the wrestlers’ talent is certainly there and cannot be questioned in some cases. However, sometimes a wrestler will need to be out of action for one reason or another and that might be the case again. This week’s SmackDown featured a tag team match between New Day and the Viking Raiders. After the Viking Raiders won, the team attacked Xavier Woods and crushed his ankle using a chair. While not confirmed, there is a chance that this means Woods will be missing time from the ring to recover. Woods is also currently co-hosting the Arena on G4, which regularly features WWE stars. Opinion: I’m curious about what this means for Woods, as that is the kind of thing that is done to put him on the shelf for a long time. Maybe he is getting some time off for the sake of G4, but the SmackDown tag..
Dynamite Date: June 22, 2022 Location: UW Milwaukee Panther Arena, Milwaukee, Wisconsin Commentators: Tony Schiavone, Jim Ross, Excalibur We’re at the final Dynamite step before Forbidden Door on Sunday, which could be quite the rough night. Bryan Danielson is making an announcement about his future and it might not be the best news. Odds are we get some more matches announced for Sunday as well so let’s get to it. Opening sequence. Here is Bryan Danielson for the announcement. Tony Schiavone asks about his future but Danielson takes the mic and says he isn’t giving it back. Danielson says this is a great week to be an AEW fan or a professional wrestling fan. This Sunday we have Forbidden Door and then a week later we have Blood and Guts with all of the violence you could want. As for Forbidden Door, Zack Sabre Jr., he wanted to prove he was the best technical wrestler in the world, while Danielson wanted to crush Sabre Jr.’s trachea. Unfortunately, he isn’t cleared to wrestle at F..
That could have been worse. An injury is the kind of thing that can take apart any storyline in the blink of an eye. You never know when you are going to see someone get injured and taken out, which can make for some rather frightening moments. There is little scarier in wrestling than wondering when someone might be out of action for a long time. This time though, it seems that things are not as bad as they seem. According to Dave Meltzer on the Saturday Night’s Main Event podcast, Roman Reigns is healthy after his match at WrestleMania 38. There had been rumors that Reigns had suffered some sort of an injury during the match but it is said to have been part of the storyline. Reigns appeared on the following Monday Night Raw and SmackDown but did not take part in anything physical. Opinion: That is quite the relief as you never want to see someone get injured. WWE would have been absolutely crushed by having Reigns go onto the shelf for a long time but now it seems like everything i..
Revolution 2022 Date: March 6, 2022 Location: Addition Financial Arena, Orlando, Florida Commentators: Excalibur, Jim Ross, Tony Schiavone We’re back on pay per view and that is usually a pretty good thing for AEW. This is an absolutely packed show with a twelve match (counting the Buy In) card, featuring a double main event of Hangman Page defending the World Title against Adam Cole and a dog collar match between CM Punk and MJF. Let’s get to it. Buy-In: Leyla Hirsch vs. Kris Statlander Grudge match. Leyla wastes no time in hammering away and taking Statlander down. They head outside, with Hirsch tying the arm up in the steps and crushing it hard for a nasty visual. Back in and Statlander gets in a shot of her own, only to get tied in the Tree of Woe. The arm is tied in the ropes again and there’s a running dropkick to said arm, knocking Statlander back to the mat. Statlander avoids a shot though and it’s a bodyscissors to keep Hirsch down. That’s broken up and they slug it out unt..
There’s always room for one more. We are less than a week away from WWE Elimination Chamber in Saudi Arabia, which is shaping up to be quite the big card. That is something that is going to make the company put in quite a bit of effort and that seems to be the case again. It was certainly the case this week, as WWE has added a last minute match to the show’s card. This week on Monday Night Raw, a match between the Miz and Rey Mysterio was added to the Elimination Chamber event. The match comes after Rey’s son Dominik has been having issues with the Miz over recent weeks. During this week’s show, the Mysterios were facing the Alpha Academy when Rey attacked Miz, leaving Dominik to get pilled. After the match, Miz laid Rey out with a Skull Crushing Finale. Opinion: This is something that needed to be added to the show as it was missing a few more stars. When so many of the wrestlers are involved in a pair of Elimination Chamber matches, you need something else to draw in a little inter..
NXT UK Date: February 10, 2022 Location: BT Sports Studios, London, England Commentators: Nigel McGuinness, Andy Shepherd For once, we don’t have a title on the line and after last week, that might be a good thing. Last week’s Women’s Title match ended with a fluke injury to Blair Davenport and she is likely to be gone for a long time. This week’s show is about revenge though as Nathan Frazer gets his hands on Teoman. Let’s get to it. Opening sequence. Amale vs. Nina Samuels Fallout for Samuels taking over Amale’s interview and mocking her. Amale slugs away with forearms to start but Samuels grabs a hiptoss. Back up and Amale grabs a butterfly suplex but they head to the apron where Samuels trips her down. A high kick into a slingshot splash gives Samuels two and she rakes Amale’s face into the mat. The chinlock puts Amale in trouble for a bit until she fights up for the clothesline comeback. A backsplash crushes Samuels for two but she is right back with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker..
It’s time for things to get serious in WWE and that makes things feel better. WWE tends to know how to get the bigger things right, at least when it comes to the build. That is the case again this time, as the card for the show is looking great. The Rumbles themselves will be fine, but you also have some good looking World Title matches and a pretty stacked mixed tag. Let’s get to it. Edge/Beth Phoenix vs. Miz/Maryse This is a match that you probably saw coming a few weeks ago as Maryse has been around from the start and Edge kept talking about Phoenix. The story itself has been a bit hit and miss though, as I’m not entirely sure why the four of them are still feuding. The idea of seeing Beth crush Maryse is appealing, though seeing Edge vs. Miz again isn’t the most thrilling. I think they’re ready: [This post contains video, click to play] I’ll go with Miz/Maryse stealing a win here, as it seems to set up a final blowoff match. I’m not sure when that would happen as I can’t imagin..
It can happen to anyone. With so many wrestlers on the current WWE roster, there is bound to be an injury or two every so often. Some of these can be instantaneous while others can take time to build up. Neither is good to see, but the recovery is what matters most. Now another WWE star is injured and we do not exactly know how long he will be out. During this weekend’s WWE Day One event, Happy Corbin attacked Drew McIntyre, including wrapping a chair around McIntyre’s neck and crushing it. WWE has announced that McIntyre has suffered a cervical neck strain with contusions. There is no word on how long McIntyre will be out of action. According to PWInsider.com, the angle took place to write McIntyre off of television as he is suffering from legitimate neck issues. McIntyre is scheduled to undergo testing to find out what is wrong and how much time he will be missnig. INJURY UPDATE: @DMcIntyreWWE suffered a cervical neck strain with severe contusions. Upon further evaluation by medi..
That could slow her down. Every now and then you see a star catch fire and turn into one of the bigger stories on any given show. It works very well if a wrestler can capture the audience’s attention and see how far things can go. That is the case on Monday Night Raw, but now things might be slowed down a little bit due to a pretty badly timed injury to a rising star. This week’s Monday Night Raw featured a showdown between Liv Morgan and Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch. Morgan had been cheated out of her title shot the previous week and wanted a rematch. Before accepting, Lynch attacked Morgan, including crushing her arm against the ring steps. During Raw Talk, Morgan was announced as having suffered a deep bone bruise and a strained radial collateral ligament in her left arm. She is still expected to challenge Lynch at Day One on January 1. As revealed on #RAWTalk, @YaOnlyLivvOnce has a deep bone bruise and a strained radial collateral ligament in her left arm.#WWERaw pic.twitter...
