They’re going. WWE runs several events a year and some of them are among the biggest wrestling cards anywhere. Getting to see one in person is a pretty rare treat as they only come to certain areas. It means a lot to have a show go somewhere else for the first time ever or even in a long time. That is what WWE is now planning to do for the first time in eighteen years. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: LOOK: Liv Morgan Appears At New York Knicks Game, Gives Man The Cold Shoulder WWE has announced that this year’s Backlash will take place on May 6 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In addition, Bad Bunny will be serving as the show’s host. This will be the first time that WWE has run a Premium Live Event in Puerto Rico since New Year’s Revolution 2005. This also marks a return to the Backlash name, after the last two events were called WrestleMania Backlash. WWE has a history with Puerto Rico. Check out some of the people and matches from the island: [This p..
They needed to do that. We are less than two weeks away from AEW Revolution and that is going to be a big night. AEW only runs four regular pay per view events in any given year so they have to make the most they can out of every show. The company knows how to stack their cards with a bunch of big matches and they moved closer to doing that this week, with more matches being added. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: He Did It: Jon Moxley Is First To Reach Major AEW Milestone Two more matches were added to the Revolution card during this week’s edition of AEW Dynamite. First, Ricky Starks issued an open contract for a match at Revolution and talked Chris Jericho into facing him in a rematch. Jericho also agreed that the Jericho Appreciation Society will be banned from ringside. Second, AEW Women’s Champion Jamie Hayter agreed to defend her title in a three way match against Saraya and Ruby Soho, both of whom have wanted title shots. There is no word on how many more matches will be added to the s..
It wasn’t in the cards. WWE has a lot going on at any given time and it can be a bit difficult to keep track of everything taking place at once. You know a special story or moment when you see one though and that is certainly the case with the top story in WWE today. However, it turns out that the original plan for the angle went a lot differently than what wound up on television. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Mystery Solved: Missing WWE Star Explains Her Four Month Absence The Bloodline has been the top story in WWE for over a year now and the last several months have focused on Sami Zayn’s involvement. This is expected to continue at the Royal Rumble, where Zayn is to show his loyalty to the team. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, there was no original plan to make Zayn a star. Zayn’s story with the team was expected to last about three weeks but he kept making everything work. Eventually WWE decided to let him run with it and he became a much bigger star as a result. There is no wor..
Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over ten years now and have reviewed over 5,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net, starting today. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? Greatest Royal Rumble Date: April 27, 2018 Location: King Abdullah International Stadium, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Commentators: Corey Graves, Michael Cole, Byron Saxton It’s finally time for a show that feels like the build has been going on for months. This is one of the biggest cards the WWE has ever produced and it’s hard to say where a lot of the matches are going to go. We’ve got seven title matches, two big time singles matches and the fifty man Royal Rumble, meaning this show could run longer than..
Bring them on in. We are rapidly approaching the start of the Road To WrestleMania 39 and that means it is time to get ready for the biggest events of the year. WWE puts on some of the most important shows of the year over WrestleMania weekend, but not all of them take place in the ring. Now it seems that the company is planning some more events in addition to their regular wrestling cards. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Other Way: WWE Makes Another Policy Change (And This One Might Not Be So Popular) According to WrestleVotes, WWE wants additional interactive shows throughout WrestleMania weekend. These shows would be similar to Undertaker’s 1DeadMan show, with fans participating and the featured star telling stories. Shows featuring Steve Austin and Trish Stratus have been discussed but there is nothing to suggest that anything has been finalized. WrestleMania 39 is scheduled for April 1 and 2, 2023. I’m told WWE is looking into having additional shows throughout WrestleMania weekend ..
The card continues to grow. We are less than three weeks away from AEW Full Gear, which will be one of the few times that AEW goes on pay per view during the year. As a result, the company tends to stack up its pay per view cards, which seems to be the case again. Now the card has gotten even bigger, as a new title match has been added to the show with a bit of a personal touch. This week on AEW Dynamite, an Interim Women’s Title match was announced for Full Gear, with Toni Storm defending against Jamie Hayter. A vignette aired showing the personal history between the two, revealing that they even lived together in England during the Coronavirus pandemic. This will be the second singles match between the two, with Storm having previously defeated Hayter in the first round of the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament. Opinion: Hayter getting a title shot is an interesting development as she has seemed to be ready to become the next breakout star in the AEW women’s division. I don’t know if ..
Impact Wrestling Date: September 15, 2022 Location: The Factory, Dallas, Texas Commentators: Matthew Rehwoldt, Tom Hannifan We’re rapidly approaching Victory Road and then Bound For Glory, meaning some of the shows’ major matches have already been announced. With some of the bigger shows on the way, it would make sense to give them that much extra attention. There’s a good chance of getting some more added to the cards this week so let’s get to it. Opening recap. X-Division Title: Mascara Dorada vs. Mike Bailey Bailey is defending. They trade armdrags to start before both block one at the same time. An exchange of countered hurricanranas gives them a standoff and they chop it out until Bailey is knocked to the floor. The slingshot dive misses and Dorada wins a chop off outside. Back in and a suicide dive drops Bailey, setting up a missed top rope double stomp back inside. Bailey pulls him into a kneebar but Dorada is in the ropes rather quickly. The running twisting shooting star g..
She’s up next. WWE has been expanding its slate of large scale shows in stadiums, meaning there are multiple events that need big time cards. The most common way to do this is with championship matches and there are several to pick from at any given point in WWE. Another of those was added to the lineup this week, as a new championship match was set for an upcoming major event. This week on SmackDown, Shayna Baszler won a gauntlet match to become the new #1 contender to the SmackDown Women’s Title. The match featured seven women, with Baszler last eliminating Raquel Rodriguez. Baszler will receive her title shot against champion Liv Morgan at Clash At The Castle in Cardiff, Wales on September 3. This will be Baszler’s first televised shot at a singles title since Money In The Bank 2020. Opinion: I have long since wondered how Baszler never won a singles title in WWE. While she had the great run as NXT Women’s Champion, nothing ever happened on the main roster for some reason. Hopeful..
He might be gone for a bit. Wrestlers are larger than life characters who are able to do all kinds of things that will blow your mind on a regular basis. It takes some special talents to make that work, but at the same time, the wrestlers you are still seeing are humans. That means you are going to see them make mistakes, and now that might be the case again with a pretty serious situation. Pro Wrestling NOAH in Japan has announced that former Ring Of Honor World Champion Michael Elgin has been arrested, resulting in him being pulled from upcoming cards. According to Cassidy Haynes of Bodyslam.net, Elgin was arrested for theft of protein powder and could face up to five years in prison. There is a chance that a deal could be made to allow Elgin to avoid jail time by having him leave Japan, as was the case with Matt Sydal in 2016. [7.10 Shizuoka – Notice of wrestler absence & change of match card] Michael Elgin, who was scheduled to participate in the Shizuoka event on Sunday, July 1..
Last fall, the family went down to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (I didn’t have much of a choice so spare me the “why there” questions) for a vacation. It wasn’t my thing, but at one point I did head out and find a bookstore to pass some time. The store was adjacent to a local mall where I thought they might sell playing cards (one of my other passions, with a current collection of 923 decks (27 wrestling) and counting). Inside the mall I found….very little, as the place was mostly dead. One thing I did find though was an old school arcade inside a comic book store, with a ton of arcade cabinets and a row of pinball machines, including the old WWF Royal Rumble game. Each play was a quarter each so I ran through at least five bucks and had one of the best days of the entire trip there on my own. So what does this have to do with wrestling? Heck if I know, but what does pinball have to do with Summerslam? That’s something that has been bothering me about the build to this year’s Summer..
Mark your calendars. There are certain wrestling shows that occupy certain times of the year. Some of these have been around for a very long time and can be game changers for a promotion. Most of the time these are special pay per view level cards but sometimes they are an event that takes place for free on television. That seems to be the case again as WWE is getting ready for a special event. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the 2022 WWE Draft will be held either just after Summerslam in August or at some point in September. This would be a change from recent years, as the last three editions have been held in October. There is no word on the details, but the previous two editions have taken place over the course of two nights, with half on Monday Night Raw and half on SmackDown. WWE has not yet announced any plans for this year’s Draft. Opinion: This is something that can offer a bit of excitement, but you can probably guess some of the moves coming in advance. WWE ..
He has enough of it. Like him or not, there are very few success stories in the wrestling world like Vince McMahon. He has taken over the wrestling world and dominated it for the last twenty years or so. As a result, McMahon is one of the wealthiest people in the world and has more money than he could ever reasonably spend. Now though, you can have a chance to have some of his money. WWE Shop is selling a McMahon “No Chance In Vegas” shirt, featuring McMahon playing cards in a casino and the phrase “No Chance In Hell” on the back, with the last word crossed out and Vegas written underneath. The shirt also comes with a collectible $1,000,000,000 bill featuring McMahon’s face and Titan Towers on the back. The combined package sells for $99.99. Opinion: That’s uh, quite expensive as most WWE shirts sell for $20-30 each, meaning you are paying about $70-80 for a collectible. I’m sure there is a market for this, but that seems to be quite the mark up on something that comes out of nowhere..
That’s what’s next. WWE is in the beginning of an unofficial new season as WrestleMania 38 has come and gone. That means things are starting to pick up a little bit as WWE is trying to go with some new stories and ideas. Some of these ideas can be rather fascinating and interesting, though it depends on what they are going to be doing. Now we might have an idea of what WWE is planning. WWE has announced some of the lineups for their upcoming European tour. The announcement includes three matches over the course of four shows from April 28 – May 1 in England, France and Germany. The three matches include Charlotte Flair vs. Ronda Rousey for the SmackDown Women’s Title, Raw Tag Team Champions RKBro vs. SmackDown Tag Team Champions the Usos and WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns defending against Drew McIntyre. These shows will take place a week before WrestleMania Backlash on May 8. Opinion: This is a nice preview of what we are going to be seeing in the next few weeks, though WWE has..
There is a market for it. Wrestling fans love what they get to watch anytime a wrestling show is on. They have their favorites and get to cheer one wrestler after another, many of whom have their own signature looks. It would make sense for fans to want to not only support those wrestlers but also show their support for them. Now that is going to be easier in WWE. WWE has announced that they have entered into a long term agreement with Fanatics for merchandise, NFT’s, trading cards and e-commerce. WWE’s online merchandise store will be replaced by a Fanatics store at some point over the summer. There is no word on what kind of changes this could mean for the amount of merchandise available or how long the partnership is originally set to last. Opinion: This is the kind of thing that WWE does as they love to outsource their stuff. If nothing else, this is one less in-house thing that they have to worry about and Fanatics is already associated with almost every major American sports le..
For the purposes for scheduling. We are just over a week away from WrestleMania 38 and the show is all but set. On April 2 and 3, WWE will hope their biggest event of the year, with a pair of shows comprising WrestleMania. The last few years have seen WrestleMania grow to even bigger levels, and now we know something important about this year’s version. According to PWInsider.com, Peacock has both nights of WrestleMania 38 blocked off for five hours. Counting the likely two hour Kickoff Shows, this would mean that the main WrestleMania cards will last three hours. The main cards of WrestleMania are expected to begin at 8PM EST with six matches currently announced for the first night and five for the second. Opinion: This is about what was expected, but my goodness the idea of ten hours of WrestleMania, even over two days, is a bit hard to fathom. It doesn’t feel like the roster has the kind of depth to make this work, which almost has me worried about how the show is going to go. I c..
Bring them on in. Wrestling promotions have a lot of different things to balance at any given time in order to keep their fans happy. This includes making sure that they have fresh matches and wrestlers so that their cards don’t get stale. That is a bit easier to do today in modern wrestling with so much talent available, and now some more wrestlers might be making appearances in a major American promotion. AEW Vice President of Talent Relations Christopher Daniels has announced that AEW has come to a working agreement with DDT Pro-Wrestling. This will allow the company’s wrestlers to appear for AEW, though there is no mention of AEW wrestlers appearing in DDT-Pro Wrestling.. There is no word on when this will begin or who might be appearing for AEW. DDT-Pro Wrestling is a Japanese promotion owned by Pro Wrestling Noah’s parent company and was Kenny Omega’s home promotion before moving to New Japan. ?Announcement! ? AEW's VP of Talent Relations Christopher Daniels has a message..
As you can tell by watching any WWE show these days (or by knowing your WWE calendar), it is WrestleMania season as we are less than a month away from the biggest show (Or is it shows now?) of the year. WWE knows how to make these things feel special once you get there, as there is really nothing like it in all of wrestling. That being said, there are more than a few things on the Road To WrestleMania that might leave you a bit confused and that was on full display this week. The last few editions of Monday Night Raw have featured some version of one of the most annoying concepts in all of WWE: the path to WrestleMania. While WWE has the Road To WrestleMania, we also get to hear about wrestlers’ individual paths to the show, meaning they need a way to guarantee that they will have a spot on the WrestleMania card (er, cards). This is something that makes sense in theory, but there is one problem with the idea: it stops making any sense if you think about the concept for more than 2.4 s..
No more running. AEW does not run the most frequent pay per views and it makes their schedule a bit different. Instead of running a show every month, the company runs four pay per views a year, meaning their shows tend to have some very stacked cards. That is something that AEW knows how to do very well and now they have added a pretty violent match to their next pay per view. Last week on AEW Dynamite, CM Punk and Jon Moxley teamed up to defeat FTR. As a result of the win, Punk was allowed to pick the specifics of his rematch with Maxwell Jacob Friedman. This week’s Dynamite opened with Punk announcing that the match will take place at Revolution on March 6 and it will be a Dog Collar match. This will be the second Dog Collar match in AEW history after Cody Rhodes defeated Brodie Lee in October 2020. Opinion: This is the kind of match that could go a long way to making Revolution special, as it is going to be a war between two people who feel like they hate each other You don’t get ..
It’s not on the cards. We are in the middle of WWE’s busiest season as the company is on the Road to WrestleMania 38. That means there is a lot of work to be done as WWE tries to get ready for their biggest shows of the year. Some of those adjustments involve a lot of work but WWE tends to know how to pull them off. In this case, it means wrapping up a story for a certain visiting legend. Lita made her return to WWE back at the Royal Rumble in January. The following week on Monday Night Raw, she challenged Becky Lynch for a Raw Women’s Title match at Elimination Chamber, which has since been made official. During an interview with Sports Illustrated, Lita revealed that there are currently no plans for her to continue with WWE after the match. There is still a chance for that to change though. Opinion: I’m not entirely surprised by this, as I don’t think Lita was exactly a heavy favorite to take the title from Lynch. That doesn’t leave Lita with much to do at WrestleMania or beyond, s..
