You might remember them. Prior to the rise of AEW, WWE had been by far and away the most dominant wrestling promotion in the world. No one came close to touching them and that had been the case since WCW went out of business. By outlasting their competition, WWE was able to pick up some of the trademarks that had been forgotten, which was the case with two former events. According to Wrestlingnews.co, WWE has filed trademark applications for Uncensored and SuperBrawl. Both of these were events used by WCW in the 1990s and neither has been used since WCW folded. It is not clear what WWE would be using the names for, though they have brought back former WCW concepts such as WarGames and Halloween Havoc among others, in NXT. SuperBrawl and Uncensored were regular WCW pay per view events, running in the 1990s and into the 2000s. WCW mainly ran the shows in February and March respectively, though the first SuperBrawl was held in May. SuperBrawl did not usually have a special theme, though..
When you watch enough wrestling over the years, at some point you are going to see something that makes your head tilt to the side and your mouth drop open a little bit. Oftentimes these are some of the most memorable things you see, albeit for all the wrong reasons. WWE has a tendency to make a lot more of these decisions that any other promotion and they have done it again, this time in a pretty had way. Let’s get straight to this. At some point over the last few weeks, WWE filed a trademark application for Gunther Stark, a new wrestling name. The company certainly has a history of coming up with one strange name after another, but this was a bit out there even for them. Then this week on NXT, Walter announced that his new name was Gunther, with the name change being made official the next day. That might seem fine enough as it goes, but there is one major detail: Gunther Stark is the name of a Nazi U-boat captain who served in World War II. Now, before we get going, one thing sho..
One more round? WWE has been around for a very long time now and the company has done a lot of things over its history. Some of these things have been more popular than others, but a few of them have been very memorable. That is not necessarily a good thing, but now it seems that WWE might be bringing back one of its older concepts for another try after a good many years. According to Fightful, on November 30, WWE filed a trademark application for Tough Enough. This could mean a return of the competition series, though WWE has not yet made any announcement. Tough Enough originally aired in 2001 and six seasons have been held, with the most recent taking place in 2015. Neither of the most recent winners, Sara Lee and Josh Bredl, ever wrestled a match on the main roster. There have been some moments on Tough Enough. Check out what has happened there before: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play]..
There she goes. According to a statement that was released via Twitter, AEW superstar Big Swole is leaving the company after the two parties mutually decided not to renew her contract. Swole had been part of the company since All Out 2019, where she competed in a 21-woman Casino Battle Royal. The statement reads as follows: Over the past couple of months my life has taken on the mantra grow, learn, change. Dealing with shadow work took strength I didn’t know I had. I think God for my loving family because they got me through some of the roughest months of my life. But I realized the real test is application. So I took my leap and after speaking with [Tony Khan] and AEW higher officials we’ve decided not to renew my contract with All Elite Wrestling. This was a hard decision but a needed one. I am grateful for their understanding and that we could mutually come to this agreement. I’ve enjoyed my time with AEW and wish them all the best. I appreciate their love and welcoming me into t..
That’s where we’re going. Tournaments are an easy concept in wrestling as anyone can get the idea. You can put however many wrestlers you want out there and hold up a prize, often a championship, and the winner gets said prize. That’s the kind of thing you see often in wrestling and you are going to be seeing it again in the future. It just might not be what you thought it was going to be. According to Fightful.com, WWE has filed a trademark application for “Queen’s Crown Tournament”. This would likely be the rumored Queen of the Ring tournament, which has yet to be formally announced but is expected to begin in October, with the finals taking place at Crown Jewel. There is no word on who will enter the tournament or how many entrants there will be. There have been women’s tournaments before. Check out some of their better moments over the years: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contains video, click to play] Opinio..
This is new. WWE is the biggest wrestling promotion in the world and that means they are going to be doing some things that other promotions are unable to do. It does not mean that they will always make sense though and sometimes the promotion will be mocked for what they try to do. They have a new idea now and I’m not sure how well it is going to be received. WWE has announced that they are now accepting resumes from potential wrestlers via TikTok. The advertisement asks for wrestlers from any kind of athletic background with any level of experience. WWE is asking for wrestlers with the following qualifications: • World-class athleticism • Size, flexibility, strength, & agility • Personality & charisma • Global appeal & diversity • Coachability, work ethic, & professionalism There is no word on how long the application will be available or how many wrestlers WWE is hoping to sign through the process. This could lead somewhere. Check out some new talents making their debuts: [This..
He needs someone. There are certain ideas in wrestling that you will see taking place over and over again. It might not be the best idea in the world, but sometimes you need an idea that you know has worked before. It can be even better if the original wrestler can be involved, even in a small way. That seems to be the case in NXT and the story may be about to expand. Last weekend at NXT Takeover: In Your House, LA Knight became the new Million Dollar Champion by defeating Cameron Grimes in a ladder match. Original champion Ted DiBiase brought the title in and had mentioned that he wanted someone to continue his Million Dollar Legacy. During an interview with PWInsider.com, Knight mentioned that he was in search of his own version of Virgil and was currently taking applications. There is no word on if NXT is planning to bring in a Virgil character. Virgil served as DiBiase’s bodyguard for the first several years of DiBiase’s time in the WWF. The pair eventually split in 1991 when Vir..
You need to move forward. Earlier this month, several wrestlers were released from WWE on the same day, with some of them being rather big surprises. That made for a rather interesting day, but also a rather interesting future, as the wrestlers needed somewhere new to go. That meant figuring out a new identity for themselves, as WWE was going to own most of their details. One wrestler has figured out a new path. According to 411mania.com, recently released WWE star Peyton Royce has filed a trademark application for the name “Cassie Lee” to replace the Royce name, which is owned by WWE. Royce’s real first name is Cassie and she wrestled under the name on the independent circuit before coming to WWE. Royce was one of the nine wrestlers released from WWE on April 15, along with her former partner in the Iiconics, Billie Kay. You might need to get to know her under the new moniker. Check out Royce under her three ring names: [This post contains video, click to play] [This post contain..
It’s a classic. WWE has been around for a very long time and has produced more television than any wrestling company in history. That is the kind of thing that can create a lot of history over the years, which can make for some rather interesting looks back through time. Monday Night Raw and SmackDown are their two most famous shows, but we might be seeing one of the other big ones making a return. One of the most important changes in the history of WWE is the introduction of Saturday Night’s Main Event. The company’s television moved from the smaller arenas without the best lighting to big sports arenas with top level production values and graphics. It changed the way the company looked and ushered in a new era. The show became a staple of the 1980s and made a brief comeback in 2006. Now, we might be seeing the same thing all over again. According to Wrestlinginc.com, WWE has filed a trademark application for Saturday Night’s Main Event. There is no word on any official plans to run..

PWInsider reports that Matt Hardy’s trademark application for the “BROKEN Matt Hardy” has been refused by the U.S. Patent & Trademark office. Matt has six months to respond to the application before it’s abandoned. The refusal reads:

“Registration is refused because the applied-for mark, as used on the specimen of record, identifies only the name of a particular character/personal name; it does not function as a service mark to identify and distinguish applicant’s services from those of others and to indicate the source of applicant’s services.”

Matt Hardy sent another tweet in response to Ed Nordholm’s communications logs and Impact contract that he leaked online Tuesday night:

“I wanted to move on peacefully & keep our incredibly unprofessional contract negotiations silent, NOT NOW.”

Matt also wrote the following Tuesday night regarding the situation:

“I tell the truth & I don’t need to desperately overcompensate to prove my public credibility. My facts will be shared via the correct venue.”

Things don’t appear to be simmering down at all between The Hardys battle with Impact over the ownership of the BROKEN gimmick. We noted earlier today that the U.S. Patent & Trademark office rejected Matt’s application to trademark the name. It’s not looking good for The Hardys.
