REVIEW: No Mercy 2007: This Is A Weird One

Welcome to KB’s Old School (and New School) Reviews. I’ve been reviewing wrestling shows for over twelve years now and have reviewed over 6,000 shows. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’ll be posting a new review here on Wrestlingrumors.net. It could be anything from modern WWE to old school to indies to anything in between. Note that I rate using letters instead of stars and I don’t rate matches under three minutes as really, how good or bad can something that short be? No Mercy 2007 Date: October 7, 2007 Location: Allstate Arena, Chicago, Illinois Attendance: 12,500 Commentators: Jim Ross, Joey Styles, Jerry Lawler, Tazz, John Bradshaw Layfield, Michael Cole It’s time for a special show as John Cena is no longer the WWE Champion due to suffering an injury on Raw. Other than that, the Smackdown side features Batista defending the World Title against Great Khali in a Punjabi Prison ma..

WWE Star Teases Bringing Back An Infamous Gimmick Match

Welcome back? There are all kinds of different matches in the wrestling world and some of them are a lot more unique than others. You don’t get to see all of them every week as it could get dull in a hurry. Sometimes a promotion finds a match that it only busts out in extreme situations, with WWE being no exception. One such match be making it’s return soon. In a new interview with El Brunch de WWE, Jinder Mahal discussed the history of the Punjabi Prison match. Mahal mentioned that Great Khali designed the match and then appeared to help Mahal win his edition of the match against Randy Orton at Battleground 2017. While Mahal said that he did not want to have too many matches inside the structure, he did want to face Drew McIntyre in such a match. No match between the two has been announced as of yet, though they are feuding. The Punjabi Prison match consists of a pair of cages made of bamboo surrounding the ring. A series of doors can be opened, allowing a wrestler to move from one ..

United States Championship Match Set For WWE Backlash

Randy Orton has his chance to win his championship back from Jinder Mahal. At WrestleMania 34, Jinder Mahal pinned Rusev in a fatal four way match to win the WWE United States Championship from Randy Orton. On the very next episode of Smackdown, Orton defeated Bobby Roode and Rusev in a triple threat match to earn a championship match at WWE Backlash. A rivalry renewed.@RandyOrton @JinderMahal #SDLive pic.twitter.com/t3FRWUbkum — WWE (@WWE) April 11, 2018 Backlash will the the first co-branded pay-per-view as WWE moves to doing that full-time. There has already been a match between Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe scheduled for Backlash. Last year, Orton and Mahal had a series of matches for the WWE Championship including the Punjabi Prison match at WWE Battleground. They also faced each other at Backlash in 2017. It should be considered that next week is the Superstar Shakeup and wrestlers will be changing brands and last year's Superstar Shakeup saw two champions change brand..

While speaking to USA Today, James Storm talked about his departure from WWE and reveled why he left. He also indicated that he is open to a return to the company if the opportunity presented itself.

“Everything is about timing. I didn’t think it was the right time. I was treated with respect when I went down there, Hunter (WWE executive vice president Paul ‘Triple’ Levesque and I talked about things. He just said, ‘At the end of the day, you have to do what’s best for you. If things don’t work out, you have my number. Give me a call.’ It was great for him to say that to me. At the time, I don’t think I was ready for it with some stuff with my family life and my personal life to take care of. He understood that. It had nothing to do with wrestling. But never say never is the wrestlers’ motto that we live by. If it presented itself, I would talk it over my family again and see what we could do.”

You can check out the full interview here.

The Taz Show Recap – Smackdown Analysis, Carmella Wins Again, Where’s Tye Dillinger? More!

Taz opens today’s show speaking about last night’s episode of Smackdown Live.

He says that it was nice to see Carmella scale the ladder and claim the Money in the Bank briefcase on her own this time, but James Ellsworth found a way to get back into the building and got involved in the match again, even after being banned from the building by GM Daniel Bryan.

Taz thinks that Daniel Bryan and/or Shane McMahon need to do something to maintain their credibility moving forward, such as suspending Ellsworth for some amount of time. Bryan specifically ordered Ellsworth to stay out of the building and Ellsworth ignored him. Taz says that Bryan needs to show Ellsworth who’s boss.

He thought that Randy Orton cut a good, convincing promo last night and Mahal’s interruption was well done as well. He’s exciting to see the return of the Punjabi Prison match, but if he was WWE he wouldn’t have had Mahal talk nicely about The Great Khali. Taz says that Mahal should be a dirty, nasty heel who shouldn’t talk nicely about anyone.

Another Match Announced for WWE Battleground

Shane McMahon announced on tonight’s episode of SmackDown Live that Randy Orton will get a rematch against Jinder Mahal for the WWE Title at the upcoming WWE Battleground event. Jinder would later announce that the match is a Punjabi Prison match. Here is the updated card:

WWE Title: Punjabi Prison match
Randy Orton vs. Jinder Mahal

SmackDown Tag Team Championship
The New Day vs. The Usos

Battleground takes place on July 23rd from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Punjabi Prison Match Returning Next Month?

It’s being said that staff workers at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia did measurements in the arena to fit a large bamboo structure. Jinder Mahal Says Dream Match Would Be Against Brock Lesnar

Jinder Mahal recently spoke with nishant.jayaram of sportskeeda.com for an interview. Here are some highlights:

WWE’s Plans to Expand The India Market: Yes, definitely, WWE is looking to expand in India. It already has a huge presence in India. So I believe, alongside other Indian Superstars like the Singh Brothers, Akam in NXT, Lovepreet (Kishan Raftar), I think the more Indian wrestlers come, the bigger the Indian audience becomes, the bigger the WWE Universe in India becomes, which I think would be a great thing because our Indian fans are very passionate.I would love to do more live shows in India – because I know the last two shows in Delhi last year were a huge success, they were both sold out. I would love to see WWE all across India, in Punjab, Mumbai and Delhi.

How US Fans Treat Him: Actually, it’s a very unique dynamic because the American fans boo me – and sometimes in my promos, I say that America doesn’t accept diversity, which is all character stuff. But I like this unique dynamic of how Indians really like me, even American Indian fans like me. In shows here in the USA, a lot of the crowd has Indian fans who are cheering for me, but the American fans are booing for me.I think it’s very unique. It reminds me of the time of Bret Hart, who was a huge and successful star in Canada – Canadian fans would cheer him, but when he was wrestling in the USA, they would (fans) boo him out of the building. I think it is a very similar situation.

New Finishing Move The Khallas: To be a WWE Superstar you’ve to constantly be evolving and improving. I study a lot of tapes, I watch a lot of old wrestling matches and see moves that work and moves that don’t work. I watch guys that are similar to my size, frame and body shape and the moves they do. Because it’s pointless for me to watch high-flying moves or guys that weigh 300+ pound power moves. I’m a unique blend of speed, size and light – I’m only 230 pounds but I’m very strong. I watch guys who are similar to my body type and see what kind of moves they do, and see what works and doesn’t, and based of that I try new stuff on live events. So, if they’re not successful I can scrap it and take it out of my repertoire.

The Success of 3MB: We’re proof – me, Heath and Drew (former members of 3MB) – are proof that anything is possible, it doesn’t matter where you are on the card. You could be the opening match, it is possible to get to the top of the card, through hard work. WWE is great, it gives people opportunities who deserve opportunities, Vince rewards hard work, WWE rewards hard work, so it motivates the rest of the locker room – they’ve seen me go from the bottom of the card to the top.

Dream Opponent: I think my dream opponent is Brock Lesnar. Imagine that match – Champion vs Champion, WWE Champion vs Universal Champion. He is my dream opponent because if I can knock off Brock Lesnar that would truly solidify me… I’m the best and let the world know that the WWE Champion is better than Universal Champion.

Whether You Like It or Not, Jinder Mahal Is Here to Stay

As we are all no doubt very aware, Jinder Mahal is the WWE Champion. He’s bested the likes of Sami Zayn and Randy Orton, and is now seated comfortably at the top of the mountain. It is still unclear just how long he’s going to stay there, but things have changed. He is not going back down to where he was. WWE is clearly all in on the Maharaja Express. Once this is all done and there’s a new WWE Champion, don’t expect Mahal to fade away. From the looks of things, he is going to be around for a while.

The Last Few Reigns Kinda Sucked

Think about it. The last three champions, for some crazy reason, have all been transitional champions. I can’t believe it. If you add the total amount of days that John Cena, Bray Wyatt, and Randy Orton held the title this year, it’s less than the length of AJ Styles’s reign. The championship went nowhere.

Cena won it off AJ so he could get his 16 title reigns and lose it to Bray Wyatt two weeks later. Two weeks. What is this, the 70’s? Next up is Bray Wyatt. His reign started out alright. He won in the Elimination Chamber and retained against Cena and Styles in a triple threat. Cool. Randy Orton burned his house down and killed Sister Abigail to death. It was an awesome moment, but that was when the feud jumped the shark.

The bad blood between Wyatt and Orton devolved into a dick measuring contest. They argued over who had the superior magic powers, with Bray claiming he was born again and Randy just kinda stabbing the ground with a stake. Then they put on a garbage match at Wrestlemania that was certifiably spooky.

Randy won and then fought Wyatt in an even spookier House of Horrors match that he lost. He then lost his in his first title defense.

They’ve Put Effort Into Turning Jinder Into a Champion

The very first thing that Jinder Mahal did on Smackdown was come out of a damn limousine like he was hot stuff. The Singh brothers weren’t even riding in the same car as him. They rolled out a carpet for him to step on. Then he had a Punjabi celebration that was actually really cool and colorful. Dancers and music were there in the stadium. It was quite nice.

They are clearly trying to present Mahal as a big deal, and he does seem like one now. This shows a surprising amount of effort. If they were just doing this for kicks and giggles, then they wouldn’t hire a whole crew of Indians to sing and dance. They wouldn’t hire a limousine. WWE is seemingly going the whole nine yards for Mr. Mahal.

Is Mahal going to retain at Money in the Bank? It’s hard to say. Randy Orton is now going after him, and where the hell is Rusev, seriously. Give that man his WWE Championship match. With a new Mr. Money in the Bank about to be crowned soon, we’re about to see some new faces in the main event scene.

Mahal, to his credit, has shown that he can hang with the best.
