Pete Dunne Talks WWE UK Championship, WWE Killing The Indies, & Wrestling William Regal
In a recent interview, Pete Dunne gave his thoughts on a variety of wrestling-related topics. Dunne is the current WWE UK Champion and will be working dates with the promotion on their current UK Tour.
If He Could Face Anyone…
“I’d have to go with William Regal for that one. He was a huge factor in me getting hired in the first place and being put in the position I have been, so I’m eternally grateful for that. And obviously the mini-onscreen rivalry we’ve had has been loads of fun. Unfortunately I don’t think it can ever happen, but if by a chance of miracle one day we could get in the ring, that’d be amazing for me”
People Saying WWE Is Killing The Indies
“It’s infuriating for people to claim that… look at it: you’ve got girls from the Mae Young Classic who are still doing independents, you’ve got a WWE title that can be seen on independent shows, there’s multiple WWE talents on these UK independent shows. To hear things like, ‘WWE is trying to kill the independents’ or whatever, that’s the opposite of what seems to be happening, so I think those comments are completely absurd.”
Being A WWE Title Holder & Still Working The Indie Circuit
“I don’t know – I pinch myself every time about that one. I always think to myself, ‘When’s this going to end?’ because it’s too good to be true. Not only do I get to come in and experience things like WrestleMania and the UK tours, I’ve seen every aspect of the way the WWE works. I get access to the Performance Center and things like that, but I also get to go out there in these intimate settings and have close intimate interactions with the fans.
“I’ve just been to Singapore, the week before that I was in Canada. To be able to tour around the world with a WWE title is helping to improve business for every single one of these companies. It’s building the independents up, which really is vital.
“The Performance Center is amazing and they bring in talents from all different walks of life but what’s vital to that success is that a lot of independent talents make a name for themselves before they get there and get their stuff fine-tuned.
“It’s important the independent scene is strong, and maybe that’s the reason we’ve been allowed to that. I’m unsure, but either way I’m entirely grateful for it.”
