NJPW Announces New Title & Tournament For Upcoming US G1 Special Shows In LA
At tonight’s ROH War Of The Worlds, officials from both Ring Of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling were on hand to unveil the new IWGP United States Championship. The title and the announcement that there would be a tournament to crown the new champion at the upcoming G1 Special Shows in Los Angeles on July 1st and July 2nd came at the beginning of tonight’s PPV.

While not much is known about the title and the details of the tournament at this time, I am pretty sure this is something that is in the vein of the NEVER Openweight Title: a NJPW specific title especially designed and implemented for the upcoming US expansion plans that New Japan has put into place.
When the G1 Special shows happen in about 6 weeks, I fully expect ROH talent to have a heavy presence in the tournament, and more than likely, one of the ROH contracted wrestlers will win the 2-day tournament. I can’t really see NJPW putting this new US Title on a Japanese talent, because that would kind of defeat the purpose.
We will have more information on this new title, the tournament to crown the inaugural champion, and the whole situation as it becomes available.
