Kurt Angle vs. Triple H Being Planned By WWE; A Look Back At 2000 Feud

If you’ve been watching RAW these last few weeks, then you’re aware of a storyline involving Kurt Angle being concerned over “job security.” This past week, the storyline was referenced by The Miz talking about Angle’s “personal problems.” Three weeks ago, we saw announcer Corey Graves show Angle a text, leaving the GM to say that “this could ruin” him without actually referencing what was in said text message.

Where this is all leading is still anybody’s guess, but today on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that WWE is currently planning on doing a match between Angle and Triple H. Certainly, one could surmise that the storyline with Angle and Graves could eventually lead to that match.

Neither Triple H nor Stephanie McMahon have been on WWE television since WrestleMania 33.

If Meltzer’s report is true, this would not be the first time Angle and Triple H have wrestled. They feuded back in 2000 (Angle’s first full year on the main roster), which was a source of consternation for many fans, myself included. Despite being built up as the future WWE Champion, Angle was never really properly put over Triple H at the time. He did eventually go over Triple H at the 2001 Royal Rumble, but it was done in weak fashion as his entire title reign was essentially “second-fiddle” to the Triple H-Austin feud that was taking place.

Looking back at the feud, a lot of people were calling for a Triple H babyface turn and Stephanie to align herself with Angle. With over a decade’s worth of hindsight, it should be obvious why that scenario did not play out. This isn’t to say Angle would have gotten over as a heel any more than Triple H did.

How things would potentially play out in 2017 is anybody’s guess, but hopefully it would be a more satisfying result than 17 years ago.
