Lucha royalty have found their way to IMPACT. Johnny Mundo — now Johnny IMPACT — debuted this week in a Gauntlet for the Gold rumble for the GFW Global Championship. The Lucha Underground star made a big impact (sorry) in the 20-man match, coming out at 13 and outlasting the likes of Moose, Low-Ki, and Suicide to make it to the final three.

In an IMPACT Zone interview with Josh Mathews, Johnny seems surprisingly relaxed about his surprise elimination by the eventual winner Eli Drake. He’s not ready to give up on the title yet, though, saying, “I can’t say I’m not looking forward to taking him to Slamtown again, though. I hope Eli Drake is saying his prayers and eating his vitamins, because Johnny IMPACT is coming for him.”

If you’re looking for an update on Lucha Underground’s nebulous fourth season, keep moving. Mathews asks if Johnny will be Johnny IMPACT full time, and all we get is a “yes.” With Taya slated to join him on IMPACT soon, it certainly seems like the self-styled king and queen of lucha are keeping themselves busy and their names fresh in the minds of television audiences as El Rey network mull over their flagship program’s future.
