An interview with Daniel Bryan was published by Sports Illustrated this week. In the interview, Bryan was asked about if he’s planning on wrestling again.

“I’m working on it. Wrestling is more of a creative outlet, and especially for somebody like me, I view it as my creative outlet. Not all WWE superstars and not all wrestlers view it that way, but that’s how I view it and that’s one of the ways my mind works creatively.”

The answer isn’t all that shocking if you’ve followed Bryan’s (forced) retirement from wrestling, though it’s pretty interesting to hear it coming straight from the horse’s mouth. Bryan last wrestled in 2015 and officially retired from the ring in early 2016. Due to his numerous concussions, there is virtually no chance WWE will clear him to wrestle again due to on-going concussion lawsuits. Specifically, Bryan had taken an EEG reflex test shortly before his retirement that revealed a lesion in the temporoparietal region of his brain. This caused Vince McMahon to urge Bryan to retire, as it was believed the lesion may have been causing Bryan to experience seizures.

However, it’s long been speculated that Bryan could look elsewhere when his WWE contract expires if he took more tests that revealed he could compete. Bryan’s contract expires in just over one year. Despite the odds being low that WWE’s doctors would clear him due to the company’s legal situation, it’s possible that outside doctors could clear him. Dave Meltzer revealed on a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Live that Bryan took tests this past April, and though he doesn’t know what the results of those tests were, Meltzer speculated that perhaps the results encouraged Bryan.

One thing for sure is that Daniel Bryan won’t wrestle unless he’s encouraged it is safe for him to do so. With a new daughter in his life, family will certainly come before his love and desire to get back in the wrestling ring.
