Charlotte Flair On Challenges Working Outside Ric Flair’s Shadow, Supporting Women’s Wrestling
Charlotte Flair may have grown up with a famous father, but the former NXT, Diva’s, and RAW Women’s Champion believes she has worked outside his shadow. Speaking to the Pensacola NewsJournal, in preparation for the SmackDown Live event in Pensacola, Florida, this Saturday, she said couldn’t imagine the pressure of being a kid of a famous person, such as Michael Jordan. But for Charlotte, the fact her father is Ric Flair actually “molded” her into the character she is today.
“I think I definitely work out of my father’s shadow, but it was hard in the beginning. But I would never change my last name, and I couldn’t be more proud to carry on his legacy.”
“I don’t think I have anything else to prove, but I never want to stop getting better. My dad spent 40 years working his butt off to create this amazing legacy. For me, I’ve only been doing this 4½ years, so I think I just have to continue to get better and evolve. Who knows what Charlotte Flair will be in two years?”
Charlotte did credit her success to her fellow female NXT and main roster superstars.
“I wouldn’t have had those opportunities if it wasn’t for the collective effort of all the women in WWE and NXT. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time with the right storyline.”
“Every time they give us these opportunities, we just have to deliver. I think the women’s tournament happening this week at NXT is a huge step in the right direction. I just hope it continues to grow the depth of women on both brands — Raw and SmackDown — when women continue to come up from the third brand, which is NXT. I don’t ever want to say, ‘it’s at its height, it’s the greatest,’ because that’s when you get complacent. With the competitive nature, who knows? Maybe one day there will be 20 girls on Raw and 20 girls on SmackDown, but the most important thing is for the women to keep working as hard as they do, and having the fans and the WWE universe invest in us the way they are.”
Top Rope Press reported Charlotte will make her acting debut later this December for the USA Network’s Psych: The Movie. In her talk with the NewsJournal, Charlotte told the NewsJournal that Psych co-star James Roday contacted her to be in the television movie.
“And I was like, ‘What? Me?’ I play a henchwoman, my name is Heather Rockrear, and I’m basically Charlotte Flair as Heather Rockrear. It’s pretty awesome … I think if it’s the right character and the right fit — I’m really into the action, fighting, tough-chick roles — so if the opportunity comes up, yes, I would love to. But my No. 1 focus is the women’s division and winning that SmackDown Women’s Championship.”
